View Full Version : Mystery of the missing pool water

To all those folks who doubted that we are having severe water problems in PE... see the new hot property that thieves are after!!!!

They are making a quick buck in the droughtstricken city’s suburbs, apparently by selling it to residents desperate to top up their pools.

The latest victim, Jacki Bilsbury of Walmer, said she had laughed when she read a local newspaper article about poolwater theft.

But two days later she had the smile wiped off her face when her own pool was sucked dry overnight while she was sleeping.

The Walmer police have confirmed that they are investigating a case of theft. Spokesman Captain Bangile Nyamakazi said an investigator had been assigned to track the culprits.

However, area police spokesman Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said the incidents were “sporadic ” and there was no need for concern.

Said Bilsbury: “I killed myself laughing when I read the report. Who has water stolen out of their pool?

“I think God was watching me and thought He would show me a thing or two. I didn’t think it would happen to me. You don’t see it coming.”

Haydn van der Walt, a Kamma Heights resident who was the subject of the newspaper report and Bilsbury’s merriment, said his water disappeared when the family left the house for a few hours. He said his pool had no leaks, and he had noticed t h at morning it was full to the brim.

He joked that his water had “no identifying marks”, so reporting the incident to the police might be futile.

The Bilsbury home’s high boundary wall, and security patrols in the neighbourhood, did not deter the thieves. They struck on Valentine’s night.

Bilsbury said her husband, Michael, awoke in the early hours to turn off the room fan — when he noticed that the pool filter was switched on.

“He went to the main board and switched it off. When we awoke in the morning, we

realised we had no water in the pool. They had turned the filter on to ‘waste ’ and pumped all the water out that way.

“I’ve never heard of anything like this in my life, and nobody saw a thing.”

Pool water is reportedly becoming a booming business in the city .

Monty Montgomery, a manager at Atlas Security Systems, a company that patrols the area, said the crime had increased in the Nelson Mandela metro and was “undoubtedly a result of the water shortage in the area”.

“Opportunistic criminals continue in their inventive ways and, in this case, will arrive outside your wall and feed a hose-pipe to your swimming pool and pump the water out.”

He said the thieves would typically arrive in a bakkie with a tank loaded on the back.

“In most instances, they will use a hand-pump, not a generator- powered pump, owing to the noise factor.” He said residents should report suspicious-looking bakkies and trucks with tanks driving around the area at night.

“The best deterrent to an intruder is your faithful dogs. They are probably the greatest asset to your security at home and are often the first line of resistance.”

Bilsbury, meanwhile, said the drought in the area had been so severe that residents had not been able to use a hose-pipe for more than a year.

“Pool water has become a sought-after commodity because no one can fill their pools. Borehole water can apparently turn your pool into a black pond, and there’s nothing you can do because it has mineral content. And because of the heat, people are desperate for pool water.

"They sell it. It’s a perfect crime because how do you identify your water?”

A Cotswold resident, Pastor Dannie du Plessis, agreed.

Although thieves robbed him twice in October last year — taking about 10 000 litres each time — he believed laying a complaint with the police was futile.

He has been praying for the drought to end.

“Sometimes rain is forecast for the area, but it will only come as far as Tsitsikamma. It is very dry, especially in our catchment area. We can only pray.”

He said he bought his pool water from boreholes at R100 a kilolitre.

Sure is an interesting crime, hardly seems worth it with hand pumps though. You're bothering to jump a wall and spend hours outside a property you're "robbing", might as well do some real crime.

Are they sure the water was stolen? Maybe someone thought it would be funny to pump everyone's pool water into the drain. I really don't see why people would want to pump thousands of liters of water into a bakkie to resell to someone else. This isn't the sahara desert.

Yes, more likely a hoax. I've never even read of automatic pool cleaners being stolen on any significant level which would be far easier.

We've had water restrictions in the PE Metro for almost 3 years now and one of the first restrictions is that you may NOT top up your swimming pool. Our dams are virtually empty.

This is no hoax. There are several cases that have been investigated by SAPS and the evidence is is there (tyre tracks, pipe indentations in grass, etc). One of the homeowners mentioned is a mate of mine!

Mention of hosepipes? Spot fine of R1000 if you are caught with a hosepipe connected to a tap, whether in use or not.

Right... you need a lot more than a bakkie for that. They can only handle about 1kl comfortably. Maybe push it to 2. My pool is about 50

This is rather scary. & to the folks who don't live there - imagine the first time you filled your pool (not top ups) it was rather eina. These people who's pools have been emptied either can't fill their pools or will have to ''import'' water from another location. What would that cost?

The SAPS should what more CSI: Miami - they can tell the make, model and year or a car just from the tyre tracks. Maybe even get some DNA or fingerprints from the edges of the pool... :D

How on earth can they tell your car make from the tyres? People choose the tyres they want fitted. Or they can pull a super hi res image off of CCTV footage.

OK. I am from PE area. My pool badly needs a topup. Is a 45KL pool and is about 10% below the line. I have heard the fire brigade can help. Phone them and they said NO WAY (you see I don't have any contacts there and I am not prepared to pay the hinted 'extra costs'). Seriously,if you know someone in the PE area who can legally help me out with a few KL,please pm. I am prepared to pay up to 200Rand a KL. The water must obviously be clean and free of salt, minerals, etc.

Surely they would simply rely on gravity and the siphon principle rather than having to hand pump it?

Well it has to be a truck, i can't see how any other normal car can carry that much water. Just consider the size of those premade pool things they just come and drop into the ground when you build a pool....that is huge, the water filling that is even bigger [in volume] and heavier too.

They had turned the filter on to ‘waste ’ and pumped all the water out that way.

You might get some of the water out that way but certainly not all of it.

I must say I've seen an influx of bakkies with those big square water tanks in the back driving around PE. Maybe they fill up a couple of bakkies up at a time or they're just the distribution vehicles.

There's a lot of info you can get from tire tracks. Vehicle weight, type of shocks, type of tires, and length and width of vehicle.

How would you get "type of shocks" ?

Well, since the vehicle will be under a lot of weight, if the vehicle turns or drives on un-level ground, some of the tires will press harder into the ground compared to the other tires, due to shocks strength. This is just a guess.

Reminds me of a personal goof. Years ago when I still had a pool, and long before our drought, I was ordered to top up the pool before a night on the town which I dutifully did. OBeing in a rush I forgot about the hosepipe only to be reminded of my mistake when we got got home to a sodden front lawn. A tad inebriated I trudged down the hill to switch off the tap and disconnect the hose pipe . . . well, I'm sure I don't have to say what I discovered had happened in the morning . . . an almost empty pool :o

You have no right to the water in my swimming pool. You have running water from a tap for which you do not pay - it's MAHALA and you also get free electricity and you do not pay rates and taxes. You voted these guys into power and they have not bothered to follow through on contingency plans that were in place for this eventuality. Instead you have siphoned off the infrastructure funds to enrich yourself and your cronies.

Put a foot into my yard and, if my dogs don't get you, I will.

I have pipes from all my gutters feeding into my pool, so every little bit of rain we get runs off into my pool. I've conformed to all the water restrictions as per the municipal notices.
