Be careful - this may be a scam where you dial a premium rate number.

Without a website for more info this sure looks dodgy.

I am using this company phonefirst.co.za (http://www.phonefirst.co.za)

The access number is 087 806 3555 and I have been able to call my family overseas using my free minutes, which has been a real bonus for me.

Lets hope Telkom dont stop these 087 lines as they are great!

I found another number service that is free. 084 195 0000. it is only free though on the weekends which for me is when i have my free minute bundle.

If I dial the number during normal times then i get charged a for a local call. I got charged R1.84 per minute to call australia and the same for China.

Found them through Google. Typed in free international call and went to a web site called www.freeinternationalcall.co.za (http://www.freeinternationalcall.co.za)

I sent then a form post from the web site and they responded within an hour of me sending my post.

I also phoned them to make sure that they exist, they answered the phone and I spoke to a lady who was very helpful.;)

I will definately use there service again and have told many of my friends and family about their services that they offer.

Quite impresive

According to their website it looks like you can't use free minutes but if anyone can actually contact them via their email address & ask the question then I would appreciate it as all my attempts at emailing them end in failure

Appears that these services are popping up all over the place. An interesting one to look out for is www.thecareproject.info . They appear to have a local SA number and their destination list looks quite impressive.

It looks quite good to me (If their service continues to work without interuption) as they appear to be a non profit organisation and they claim that all profits go to charity. From their website I know that they make money from rebates from the service providers so I figure it might be worthwhile to support them and donate at the same time. Their website looks like its still in developement though.

Plus I can call my brother in Australia on his mobile for Free!

It seems like that website is actually registered in your name mobzone. Why do you speak about them when you should say I?

Calling any 087 number is a premium number so you are paying about R2 / minute.
Now if you are calling UK example - You will be paying R2 / min - this is DAMN too expensive to call UK. i tell u why
* There are many calling cards out there - this is how it works
You will call a Local number (and pay local rates - example 16c offpeak) + FREE minutes will apply (if u use a closer plan it is FREE)
Then the rate on the calling card to call UK is 25c. so in total u will be paying 41c a minute compared to R2 a minute

* Calling 010 numbers can ONLY be called from Jhb landlines & it charges at premium rates - so the calling card option is still the cheapest

*** How do they make money - All these companies offering these so called FREE calling is actually making a killing and many of them illegally (will expline later)

For every call made to any of these 087 or 010 numbers - the owner of the numbers gets a kick back from the providers (example if you call from a VOdacom number - vodacom will give the owner a kickback per minue), so what they do is they connect the numbers to allow the caller to make international calls (but you will notice you will only be able to call CHEAP destinations, so that the owners of these numbers do not loose)

Now all this is 100% legal, but what many of these people do is every now and then they disconnect the international calling for few minutes, so what happens is that when a caller calls the number they still get there kickback & the caller is charged for calling the number (but the caller is not connected & the owner of the number is making $)
* I am aware that ICASA is monitoring this as companies with these numbers are not playing "fair"

Conclusion - NOTHING is FREE & if you work out the cost of the so called FREE call it cost much more then the cost of a PC or calling card call.

Infogeek. you are quite correct on your interpretation of the inbound rebate earned by the provider of the number. Now since you seem well informed please see below;

97% of our population do not have access to a PC. 14% of our population is not from SA. And often would like to call home. MTN and Vodacom both charge in excess of R 5 per minute to these destinations. So if a user now wants to call India, it is much cheaper for them to use this service at about R 1.70 then to pay Vodacom and MTN R 5 per minute

Now let me put all the facts on the table. Neotel use 010 numbers, all new Johannesburg numbers are 010 numbers as ICASA has run out of 011 numbers. 087, 084 are all treated the same (off Net) - Example - Mtn calling Vodacom same as MTN calling 087. Agreed nothing is for free, your message above of 361 words or1845 characters has a carbon foot print someone is paying for.

I agree, many people don't have broadband and cant use some of the cheap options available. I just wish the broadband pricing would come down enough to make it all affordable. I mean I have adsl (384k only) but my parents don't. It wouldn't really make sense for them to get adsl just to make phone calls to her sister now would it?

So what if these people are making some money.I think it is a service for the people who are willing to pay for the service and are much cheaper than the mobile operators. In my mothers case calling from her home phone without having to buy phone cards is perfect particularly since it costs just about the same as buying a card and calling the access numbers.

I know she used to use Globel and there she was calling a local number. Cant remember if it was toll free though?

The site proposed by mobzone does seem interesting even though I can confirm the domain is registered to an email with the same name. I mean if they are using the rebates to fund their projects than I mean who cares... excuse the pun!

Hey guys ...Just to clear things up..I have registered the domain and I have taken it upon myself to pay the website cost for the association..If anyone is not comfortable with that then please pm me directly without cynical comments on this forum.I have not personally setup the website however I know the people involved and can assure you that they are dedicated to make a positive contribution to society.

If you think that it is more profession to have the domain registered in the organisations name then so be it. Everyone involved tries to contribute where they can and this is my contribution. If you think mentioning their site here is a violation and misuse of this forum let me know and I will remove the post. As they are a non profit organisation who don't have the resources to advertise all over the show I think the post would help them get support. If you don't like the idea of them trying to generate funds for their projects then that is your problem not mine.

Please accept my apology for the tone, I am just fed up with people who attempt to degrade something good without getting their facts straight.

Oh and they allow calls to Skype users as well from your cell phone or house phone. (If you think this is advertising then yes I am proud to advertise for a good cause)
