How to back up Outlook Express Emails

Good Day the People... Just Reinstalled a copy of Xp on a computer and I need to back up the emails to the other computer. Basically all I want to happen is to see all the emails on another version of outlook in another o/s. I tried the export command in Outlook Express but it just exports them to Microsoft Outlook. Is it possible for me to back up the emails to a Disk and restore them on another computer.

Copy Mail Files to a Backup Folder
To make a backup copy of your Outlook Express e-mail message files:

On the Tools menu, click Options.
On the Maintenance tab, click Store Folder.
Select the folder location, and then press CTRL+C to copy the location.
Click Cancel, and then click Cancel again to close the dialog box.
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, press CTRL+V, and then click OK.
On the Edit menu, click Select All.
On the Edit menu, click Copy, and then close the window.
Right-click any empty space on your desktop, click New, and then click Folder.
Type mail backup for the folder name, and then press ENTER.
Double-click the Mail Backup folder to open it.
On the Edit menu, click Paste.
Close the Mail Backup window.
Export Your Outlook Express Address Book

On the File menu, click Export, and then click Address Book.
Click Text File (Comma Separated Values), and then click Export.
Click Browse.
Locate the Mail Backup folder that you created.
In the File Name box, type address book backup, and then click Save.
Click Next.
Click to select the check boxes for the fields that you want to export, and then click Finish.
Click OK and then click Close.

The directory where the files are stored is

C:\Documents and Settings\yourloginname\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{some wierd string of hex}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Back these files up and just put them back into the relevant directory on the other machine. Some older versions of express use a different format though.

Microsoft has a tool you can use to make the files compatible with older versions. I dunno what is is called but if you do a search on their site I am sure you can find it without too much trouble.

tools/options/maintenance/store folder will give you the folder where the messages are stored. You could also change the folder to something else, but them you will have to import the messages from the previous folder. This helps if you have two user ids that you use on one computer, but want to have the same outlook folders.

Perhaps you would like to try what I do.

I store my Outlook Express Files on another drive completely.
In my case E:\Outlook Express

Go to Tools/Options/Maintenance/Store Folder
Change the directory where you keep your files.
Simple.

And when you feel like you want to do a Format, all you need to do is just point Outlook Express to the directory as above.

You should also backup your Address Book.
C:\Documents and Settings\BTTB\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book\
The file has a .wab extension.
You will need to show hidden files to see these.

Also from time to time I copy the files to CD's.
That way you could keep emails stored for years.

Jet, I've been using e-Backup (http://www.inachis.com/download/index.php) for almost 3 years now. No probs ever. It's free, and if it wasn't, I'll be happy to pay for it. Took my OE from 98 to XP Pro, saved my arse a number of times. ALso have the ability to specify additional data directories to backup.

Or you can try XP's File&Settings Transfer wizard in System Tools, ca't remember whether it does OE though

why dont you just search for .dbx files and there you go backed up

why dont you just search for .dbx files and there you go backed up There is a man with brains, it might not be standard out look though. So depending on the 1 you are using it changes. If you do search for the files remember its *.dbx.
