View Full Version : free airtime voda & mtn

On the eve of the government introduction of new legislation controlling phones and sim cards, the networks are discounting sims and giving away airtime. After loading your airtime mtn put an extra R10 on your account and voda will add R12 if you enter *120*771# and press SEND or the CALL button.
{EDITED: mysterious! while mtn are just adding a R10, the othr srvce seems not to work any more!}

On MTN that *120*771# gives u the following msg:

Y'ello! Service coming soon
on MTN.Ringtones & Logos
@ R1! Dial *123# free from
a MTN phone & select a
menu option now!

It doesnt use any of ur airtime and neither do u get any.
BTW i donno if it might do smthing on normal PAYG sims, cos im on MyCoice TopUp

there's no special number to enter, just recharge as normal. i got an sms saying something about giving me R10 free as part of some promotion. checked the account balance and they really did credit it with R10. at first i thought "cool", but now i saw this thread and it makes me wonder what's happening :confused: not that we should be complaining, but does anyone know why they are giving away free airtime?

it was word of mouth really and it worked for me. It seems to be something called SmartCall. I tried a second time and got nothing except a small deduction so watch out:-(. OOPS SORRY! Maybe it works office hours only?

AFAIK in future u'll have to register ur sim when u buy it and give ID and all that *****, so it'll cost more i guess because of all the extra admin. Then if ur sim gets lost or stolen u MUST report it to the police. thats what i heard, maybe sm1 else can tell us more?

The reason behind it is for SARS to be able to trace transactions. They initiated the law for that reason. The ultimate aim is to make prepaid much more expensive so that people take out contracts thus enabling traceing to you. At the mo SARS is losing out on billions that simply cannot be traced because the peeps are doing the transactions over pre-paid phones.

I tried again and I was charged less than R1 so I dont know where you get 6 from? It worked once for me and for the person above but I haven't worked out why. Smartcall is a different service provider and I am on Voda PAYG. It may be an anomaly but if we ask too many questions it may stop!

VodaCom has been rather generous this month in that case... if you load an SMS Voucher (the R49 one) between 1 December and 31 January, instead of getting 150 SMS's they're giving you 300 SMS's and I know it's true, I loaded my voucher at 12 28 AM this morning and it said you now have 300 National SMS's.. altho when I check my balance it says 150 but I suppose once they're used it it auto loads another 150. And each VodaCom subscriber has also been given 10 FREE MMS's to use it during the same period..

Oh and I got the Cell error message by the way :P Charge me R1 something... but maybe it's cause I'm on an Airtime Contract :confused: (VodaCom TopUp)... oh and yesterday I bought a VodaCom sim caard for a mate and it said something about SmartCall on the front, didn't pay it much attention but maybe it had something to do with it :rolleyes:

There is this scam going on on wapsites that all you have to do is send *120*somethingsomething# and you'll receive R29 airtime. Don't fall for it however lame it might be - somebody probably has fallen for it before.

I have surfed the net off my vadacom account hecticly lately on 24cents. It is still 24cents, so I have had free internet on my phone. Is this normal because I thought it was R2/mb?

frans

is it possible to enter some kind of code in order to get free airtime on Vodacom?

lol, frans ,your new here hey? Well let me clarify... that *120*somethingsomething# is *120*777# and it's an legitimate service (game) from a big name in SA, SmartCall read this…. http://www.smartcall.co.za/USSDGamesTerms.shtml
They have multiple games you can play, eg. Lucky Sevens
To play, dial
* *120*770*1# or
* *120*770*7# or
* *120*777#
5 numbers drawn from (0 - 9)
* 2 x 7 wins R12 airtime
* 3 x 7 wins R29 airtime
* 4 x 7 wins R110 airtime
* 5 x 7 wins R1000 airtime

And yes,like i said to you on the other thread, you're using the free apn, vlive....enjoy it while you can.

Smartcall had a get R12 free promo running on *120*771#, this promo was discontinued on the 31st of March 2006. If you dial that number now from any Vod sim it should say that. You'll get charged 20c if you do so, this is the minimum 'bearer rate' for USSD traffic in the *120 number range. It goes to the operator, not to the Wasp.
*120 numbers are premium rated USSD.
Conversely, *130 numbers are zero-rated (free), specifically to be used for recharge services, for example: http://www.smartcall.co.za/smartLoad.shtml

Vod offers premium rated USSD, MTN doesn't.
Smartcall has a number of Vod-only comps running on premium rated USSD.
*120*777# : Lucky 7s
*120*770*3# : Jackpot Jacks
*120*770*4# : Aces high
*120*772# : Win-a-voucher
These all run in the R5 band, phase 1. USSD is billed in 20 second increments, phase 1 means, request, response, terminate, so you'll be charged R1.67 per entry (R5/3).
All the games are detailed at http://www.smartcall.co.za/USSDGamesTerms.shtml
These can be played by contract or prepaid subs, if you're on contract and win you'll get an SMS requesting the nomination of a prepaid no.
Hope that demystifies things a bit.
