6 weeks is pretty bad.
I hope this won't affect L.A. Noire...

I would be very unhappy if this had to happen to Xbox Live. What would I do with myself for 6 weeks?
Then again you get what you pay for. :)

PlayStation Plus members are equally affected.
Plus other consoles (notably XBox 360) have seen their fair share of troubles. Remember RRoD? Much worse IMHO.

Couple things people are forgetting are they said they are moving to a new data center plus changing their software. Then we're not even talking about all the admin stuff that must happen during this process including all the forensic work which usually means you cant do or touch anything. Also a lot of their other services also needs to be looked at as PSN is only one of many.
As a IT Administrator from a technical point of view I understand stuff like this does not happen over night. Small network with a handful of PC's yes, but a global network forget about it. If everything is up and running smoothly from implementation to testing before going live I would be amazed.

Does anybody know which games can be played online without PSN, or do all of them require PSN login?

Yes, that was without a criminal attack the size of the PSN breach, also the did not have to rebuild the complete network as well as create new firmware for the hardware to overcome a security breach and their developers network was not compromised at all.

Sure PS3 get the best and most exclusives against what? Then there is the online play of titles like KZ3 with realism Xbox have yet to experience. After this outing we wont just have the most active online players but maybe even the best network, not that the old one was not up to live standard regards to game play.
As they say with Live you get less than you pay for, but at least you only get Amercan fanbois for free.

Then again
Sony Denies May 31 Deadline For PSN Return
Earlier today, a Bloomberg report quoted Sony spokesman Shigenori Yoshida as saying that though the company is "uncertain when it can resume ... services," the plan is to have the firm's flagship online service up and running no later than May 31.
Since that time Sony spokesman Patrick Seybold has asserted that there is no such deadline in place and that no new information exists on when the PSN will be able to resume service.
It may even take longer

I am sure it would be but IMHO very little can secure against thousand of determined hackers. Can Sony afford Pentagon security? What would that security overheads do to the overall game play experience?

Apparently, when they come back online, they offering two free games to every PSN member (probably in America only :P)

The network would be fully restored by 31 May, but they are doing in phases the first phase is restoring the online gaming so i doubt we have to wait that long for the network to be back online. The store would be the last thing they turn back on.

Does PSN allow you to purchase a code from elsewhere, which you type in when you sign in? I'm keen on getting a PS3 soon, but certainly not keen on trusting Sony with my CC info.

You can buy PSN cards. See Zaps and others . Sometimes you get R500 or R200 cards for less. (Best is to phone them), Thats what I use. You can also buy $cards from some.

PSN matchmaking back in next few days?
Sony plans to bring PlayStation Network matchmaking back online within the next couple of days, according to a trusted Eurogamer source.
When contacted for comment, SCE corporate communications director Patrick Seybold told Eurogamer, "We're working to get the network back on as soon as we can."
Meanwhile, a PlayStation Europe community manager has confirmed that Sony intends to get online gaming back up and running before other PSN services.
"Once again, 31st May is the date for FULL restoration of PSN services. Restoration is phased. Online gaming will return BEFORE May 31st," read a post on MusterBuster's Twitter feed earlier today.
Over the weekend, a Sony spokesperson warned that full PSN service might not return until 31st May.

Really useful reply there!
It's pretty obvious that the attack was organised by people that dont really agree with Sony's policy of banning modified Playstation users.
they did it to themselves. It's to be expected when a company blatantly disregards the majority of its customers opinions.

It will be interesting to see the percentage of people that will never trust Sony again after this (I think at least 50%).

Not apologising for Sony at all - just commenting on the technical aspects - they also have to cater for the peak load when they do come back online - everyone is going to rush at once - if they don't plan that properly the sheer load might bring them right back down again.

It might be better to bring it back online over a period of a week. So USA on the first day, Japan on the second day, Europe on the 3rd day etc. This will allow them to monitor balance the load better.
