Very interesting comments, whether they are valid the MyBB members can discuss and debate.

My view is that its not all about the Xbox but communications on the cheap?

The biggest advantage that sticks out is the fact that Microsoft can add Skype to its consumer brands and integrate it deeply with its other core services, most notably Xbox Live (chatting via Kinect through Skype) and as a replacement for Windows Live Messenger – a dead brand ever since it was renamed from MSN Messenger back a few years ago.

I think they will make this work, but 30 years to recover the cost is quite a while...

They have something up their sleeves here.

Today, I tip my hat to an old rival, Microsoft. By acquiring Skype, Microsoft becomes a much stronger player in mobile and the clear market leader in Internet voice and video communications. More importantly, Microsoft gets a team, ably lead by the exceptional Tony Bates, that can compete with anyone

Yap, Yap, Yap... man these Americans like to talk and talk and talk. Interesting that there is no change on www.skype.com (no news or even a MS logo)....

Well they will add all the Xbox users, then there are the smart phone market and many more possibilities. I think it's is to replace many of their existing communication utilities at once and to compete with Google talk. Their own efforts was a failure and now they bought in some experts. Also Windows8 are near?

Why did Microsoft pay $8.5 Billion for Skype? Don't they know you can download it for free?

It has to do with legal matters.

The guy doesn't know what he's talking about. See this post (http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/333212-Microsoft-purchases-Skype-for-US-8.5-billion?p=6104840&viewfull=1#post6104840).

Canvassing for hits, well there are the other blunders he was referring too, so it remains a valid question to be proven either way.

Blunder? Yes & No. Its a good move strategically. They might have overpaid by quite a bit though:

The price Microsoft agreed to pay for the company is 32 times Skype's operating profits
No finance guy will okay that....unless there are massive synergies (Kinect), massive growth on the horizon or MS is desperate for one of the patents Skype holds. Somewhere between those two they need to create ~200m USD annual profit out of thin air. I don't see patents or growth being good for that kind of cash so it has to be the synergies.

Skype might also feature in WP7 somehow...the telecom companies won't like that though.

Way too early. They barely just *agreed* on it. Its not really broken per se so there is no rush to integrate at lightning speed.

Whoosh!
