Am I the only person that notices a decided lack of precision in the use of the English language on these forums?
It would appear that one of the "outcomes" of OBE is that Generation-Xers are poor to abysmal at spelling.

Well, yes, I do notice it. I love correct spelling. Everybody can make the odd mistake, but when it comes to the basics i.e. difference between their and there or past and passed...I tend to notice. It doesn't matter on these forums, but it looks rather unprofessional etc. when in letters...so it does irk me a tad...not too much though

I don't mind the odd typographical error - after all, almost everyone makes those. When I see a post with poor spelling and grammar though, I'm inclined to treat the writer as an uneducated idiot, and their post as having less value.

Seriously, it actually has to do not with the first and last letters, but with the up and downstrokes in the word, and their approximate positions. That's why it can be hard to read text written completely in capitals.

I dunno... typing out a post that is spelt correctly, and makes proper use of grammar doesn't actually take me longer than a post that would be full of spelling mistakes and incorrect use of grammar.... okay apart from the extra apostophes here and there. So that takes what, maybe an extra 0.023 seconds to type? Maybe it's just me. You either know how to spell something or you don't. You either know how to use grammar or you don't. It's not like you have to sit for five minutes preparing a sentence in your head. WTF?

Well, considering that I think that most forumites are passed their 20s, and the first group who were educated with OBE are only in Matric this year, I think your statement regarding OBE is incorrect.
I do, however, agree with you regarding spelling -- although I note that it is not just these forums in particular, but on the Internet as a whole.

Therefore, theoretically, you are passed 20...;)
I've got this theory, might be a little bit fundamentaly flawed though, it goes like this:
In general, people only start counting at 1, so in effect you loose one year of life due to the counting process - which has been in use for millennia (that's the flaw). EG: If you were born in 1985 you would count 86, 87, 88, 89, 90, 91 etc. all the way to 2005 which gives you 20. This method makes you loose out on one year, 1985 (regardless of month).
Now, if you include the year you were born in the counting process, you would count 1985, 86, 87, 88, 89 etc. which would mean that you are actually currently experiencing your 21st year of life.
Thats my theory, and I'm sticking to it!:D

I find that computers and "spell checks" have made me very lazy, and that I do not proof read my work as well as I should. Because let's face it the spell checks do leave a lot to be desired.
In fact when I write stories or poems, I have a good friend in the UK who checks my writing for me.
Compound this with the fact that my hand / eye coordination is shot to hell and I am basically "keyboard dyslexic" then we have a recipe for disaster.
Seriously though, well spoken / well written English (and Afrikaans ) is an absolute pleasure to listen to and read. I am always attracted to someone who has an extensive vocabulary too.;)

you are aged 20 last birthday
you are aged 21 next birthday
and in general you are aged 20.5 nearest birthday (assuming a uniform distribution of births across the year).
So it depends totally on what your definition of age is, most people use age last birthday. :D

I use a little plugin, ieSpell (http://www.iespell.com) that works quite well for IE, not sure if something similar is available for Firefox.
I tend to travel a lot, and prefer to do most of my work server-side, i.e. in browser format, so a browser spell checker is essential.

When I started working, I usually proof read my work once. Now I do it twice, once for once for tone and flow and once for spelling and grammar. If you force yourself to do this it will come naturally.

I think you will find two distinct sides to this discussion... those who cannot spell, or are just too lazy to bother, and therefore say that worrying about it is an@l, and then the other side who take pride in what they write and therefore are bothered by poor grammar and spelling!
I, for one, like to think of myself as the latter. I may make the odd mistake but it really bugs me when some people just don't bother making an effort. Also people who use "cu" instead of see you, "l8r" instead of later... that is just pure laziness, especially when you have a qwerty keyboard at your disposal.
