got 2 jack russells, 1 is a puppy which i got yesterday
been feeding the other one molteno for the past year
this jack russell scratches himself the whole day, no fleas ,regularly wash, use capstar and flea spray.
guy at pet shop says i must stop buying molteno, its got too much maize in it which the dogs can't digest, and that jack russells have a sensitive skin.

whats the next up from molteno,
is the only option to buy Hills/Eukanuba/some premium dog food at R600?

i read this post

about dog food as well, but this looks like a thing perhaps about jack russells specifically.

Just buy Pedigree Puppy Small to medium Breed.
What shampoo you using? Go get shapoo from the vet, got two foxies and they use different shapoo as the one has a slight skin/hair issue which the shampoo sorted out.

We are using Alpo/Vitagen for our three month old Jack Russells.
http://www.petsforsale.co.za/Dog-Food/vitagen-dog-food.html

About R80 for an 8 Kg bag at Pick and Pay.

They are doing just fine with it.

We also use a mild tick and flea shampoo to wash them with once a week.

Yea that is good dog food for sure, jx i would also suggest you buy some husky and add it their food. I also find dog bones are incredibly good for our animals. I would also resist washing them too often. Sure if they are flee invested do it but if they are not i am not a big believer in washing dogs weekly. Seems excessive. I know humans thrive on hygeine but i find our mix scratches like a mad thing if we wash her too often. Summer is crap because flee's are a damn nightmare.

Been using Nutriphase for 5 years now, available at PnP, and it does not break the bank too.

I have noticed over the years that dogs skins are VERY sensitive to the shampoo you use and also the flea spray. Try find the natural dog shampoos that have tea tree oil and aloe vera in, works a charm. Also get this omega-3 oil that you put over their food which is supposed to help for skin allergies.

I wouldn't use supermarket food.. There are foods available at the vet that don't cost that much.. Perhaps try vets choice. Costs around R190 for 8kgs but should be better than supermarket food. Btw, I used to feed my dogs pedigree and if I remember correctly, even that was pretty expensive...

I'm not trying to debate supermarket vs vet food, it's just my choice...

Rather than taking advice from the local petshop worker, why not ask your vet?

Personally, I think Hills is as good as it gets--we feed our dachsies the sensitive skin range (food allergies).

The best food for ANY dog is raw meat. Muscle meat, kidneys, livers and other organs. They're descendants of wolves & hunters by nature. Feed them accordingly.

And deworm them regularly. Also, odd as this might sound, my pup, specifically, is allergic to pork and (we assume) the hormones used in beef so he's stuck on chicken and a hypo-allergenic diet :p

The problem with many vets is they also sell dog food. So find a vet that does not sell dog feed to get a proper opinion :D.

True, but if your pet has a skin condition that keeps coming back then prescription dog food it the only option as well.

Personally, I'd never feed my animals commercial dog food. So much crap in there :/

Feed your dog those white things on the edges of mutton chops. They call it fat. Feed your dog that. A finger sized piece of fat every second day, if you're not willing to feed it that fat daily, will do your dog wonders.

And also dust and fine sand dry skin out like crazy.

Masters choice (http://www.masterschoice.co.za/) dog food* and baby shampoo for the baths.
For flees and tics we use frontline once a month.

* ~350 for 20kg. Lasts our 2 big dogs a month.

I've got 2 yorkies, one which developed a skin condition after being poisoned. I tried every type of food from the vet Hills, Eukanuba, VetsChoice etc. but nothing really helped.

One night we ran out of the vet food and I quickly went to Spar and got one of those small bags of Pedigree thinking to replace it with a vet brand again as soon as it was finished.

Within 3 days of switching to it the skin condition just dissapeared, haven't gone back to a vet brand since and haven't had any issues again.

If you think dry skin is mange ... it probably is!!!

Get veterinary help fast!!! ... Like in damn fast!!!

I've got a pet hate against mange.

Imagine your own skin being like swiss cheese. The holes just a little bit smaller, and millions of them. That's what mange is ... with some parasitic **** in them as well.

If you have dog and live along the coast ... please condition your dog to love swimming in the sea. You';ll save yourself a dog-load of trouble. Unless your dog is flimsy jack russell ... after which you'll have to rinse the jack with fresh water thoroughly - ans I mean THO-ROUGH-LY.
