Its tough to be an ISP, but they have to realize that this is a 24/7 business, therefore the support should be in place.

Lots will have to change in the new year, not only on Telskum's side.

so it looks like that the ISPs don't really care much about the problem, I just checked the logs and yes it has been happening since couple of weeks ago but not to such extent as today. I am for 2 hours now without internet.

I have mentioned the problem to the openweb some time ago, but they didn't say anything much about it.

so what we gonna do about it? It looks like the same sh*t as multichoice ads volume, there is a problem, but nobody acknowledges it and nobody boders to fix it!

I am using GPRS at the moment and the rands are ticking at incredible speed just from a very light browsing!!!

anyone got any phone number of OpenWeb.SAOL representatives? SAOL web site won't open!

It's hard to offer 24/7 support on the prices the users of this forum are wanting to pay.

No wallace sorry to burst your bubble it's not. I hate to say it swordfish, but get yourself a telkominternet account and dump that SAOL account for the time being you wont be dissapointed.

Hey Friends,

I am sorry to hear you guys are experiencing problems.

We have been aware of a problem for a while now, and have brought it under the attention of our suppliers. We have been working with them to solve it asap.

In the meantime though, I will be handing over a temporary IS Local account to OpenWeb users experiencing problems, just until we can sort out this problem.

I, would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused. Our sincerest efforts are being awarded to this problem.

I hope everybody had a great christmas day, and that the cheer of the festive season continues with you throughout the new year.

Warm regards

openweb=saol looks like

well, it is very good that they (MrBeep) admits there is a problem and that they are working on it, I have only one question: the problem seems to exist since couple of weeks ago, but wasn't that bad, in 1-5 minutes usually reconnected, so why nobody bodered fixing the problem BEFORE it come to a state to render the service completely unusable???

I understand that nothing is perfect, especially software, but I really hate when people delay resolving obvious issues until everything falls appart, and then expect that just saying yes there is a problem and we are working on it will make it up for the inconvenience caused!

is telkominternet still uncapped?

I have paid for January already (silly me, always on time unlike the service I am getting), but I will move to telkominternet if I can get +/- 10GB at the same price, if the present issue is not completely resolved in a matter of few hours from now

Hey swordfish,

Unfortunately I will not be able to answer that for you, however, I will find out from SAOL tomorrow.

Did you get my PM with your backup account details?

Once again, I am really really sorry.

Kind wishes,
MrBEEP

3 hours and 10 minutes with no internet!

Its not as though other ISPs have no downtime - I mean give your ISP a chance man! Three hours! I figure you'll get over it. Better hope lightning doesn't take out your local dslam - we'd never hear the end of it.

But congrats to MrBEEP for personally spending his boxing day sorting you out and providing alternatives - impressive.

Yes, I have to say, once again, congratulations to MrBEEP, he has proved on numerous occasions that he considers his clients ... it would be nice if more ISPs adopted that attitude. :)

Problem was resolved at around 17H50 and was caused by our main SAIX feed going down. I'm still waiting to find out from SAIX / Telkom what caused the problem.

I was logged into my saol account the whole time - I'm guessing it was just authentication problems.

thank you MrBeep, I got the PM

see, I am not pissed off because there was some down time, I am aware that no one can guarantee me 100% up time for R350 pm, the thing I am pissed off about is that this particular problem exist from very long time ago (I even sent an email few weeks ago mentioning the problem with excerpt from the logs, even though it didn't affect me much at the time) and nobody did anything about it for couple of weeks, just because the auth failures lasted too short for anyone to complain too seriously!

so I am not blaming you, you are the only one from the ISPs side who came to the forum and let us know the status of the issue (which is highly appreciated by everyone here!), but I will really appreciate if you find the people responsible and make sure next time they do their job BEFORE everything completely breaks, and before hundreds of people are left without internet for a number of hours, potentially losing money, business, etc., just because somebody was incompetent/lazy/irresponsible/on holiday or whatever!

Once again thanks you MrBeep!

yes it looks like just auth problem, it seems to have happened most days for the last couple of weeks, but not for as long as it did today

Correct, if you tried to connect between around 14H00 and 18H00 you would have experienced the problem, else only your email would be affected.

Yes swordfish telkominternet is still uncapped at the moment. I am not sure for how long they will remain uncapped, but I have done 15gigs so far and with ip resets every 24hours they are hard to beat at the moment. I mean for R250 a month it is currently the best offering. Sad but true.

Today's fault was an isolated problem with our SAIX feed - it has no relevance to the intermittent authentication errors we have experienced recently.

yeah doc, once you got below 2 gb or so they make you reauthenticate every 2 hours or something as awesome as that...but if you accept responsibility for your cap excess, then you can go back to 24 hrs.

Its an exciting time we're living in.
