Anyone know why I can send co SMS to the UK, roam there with my SA sim but can't send or recieve an MMS?
I've tried getting around this with phone to phone email, but the operators seem to be trying to block this route as well!

SMS is sent via the GSM, the same as your normal voice calls. MMS and e-mail require a GPRS connection (although it may work with 3G?).

Although the cell operators have roaming agreements with most countries this does not necessarily include GPRS or 3G coverage. Check with your service provider and ask if they provide data services while abroad, if they do then you would need to find the settings for the service of the country you are in.

roaming offers you the service of voice calls and text msgs , not not data carriers , mms is a data carrier. no prices have been negotiated with foreign networks therefore data is blocked off

Need to confirm this.

I've sent and received MMS's from the UK nearly a year ago, but at that point there was no roaming agreements, so MMS delivery was not reliable. I would have thought by now the agreements would be in place.

My view exactly!
There must be many expats wanting to exchange pictures & so on, so why delay a potentially lucrative service?

is there anything that needs to be additionally setup to send an MMS to a UK mobile user? or is the same as your normal MMS setup?

my dad has been trying to send various MMS to my sister the UK for over a year, without any luck, although Vodacom has told him on several occasions, that it should work???

No, the setup should be the same.

Which network is your sister with?

I speak under correction, but I think it's Orange

I had confirmation today that the inter-mms agreements are nearly in place. Will update with more info as I get it.

I've been able to exchange MMS's with Vodafone operators, have not tested Orange.
