TV and monitor tax must be scrapped (http://mybroadband.co.za/news/hardware/31288-tv-and-monitor-tax-has-to-go.html)
A recently reinstated tax on monitors larger than a certain size is not in the spirit of why import duties are levied, argues Mustek CEO

With prices going up, you now have an extra levy to contend with.
Makes hard competing with the bigger players out there :(

LOL.. I was thinking the EXACT same.
Goverment don't care about anything.. except taxing us to mofo death!
The 'spirit' of this reinstatement has more to do with revenue generation than anything else. Sadly it will be deaf ears on which this plea falls.

“Why does the DTI not levy taxes on complete PC importation?” Kan asked.
Now you know who to blame when they ADD another tax to PC's while not removing it from the TV's like you would expect..

Doesn't the level of local manufacture determine the tax percentage?

And to stop the local market from being obliterated by cheaper imports.

If the local market can not produce the same quality at the same price I do not understand why it exists (or why I should be the one that suffers).
Didn't they try the same for the clothing market? that was also a fail far as I can recall.

Theft, absolutely pure theft.
As far as I am aware we have NO local monitor manufacturing (assembling a few screws does not count in my book), so there is really no industry to protect. Considering the size of monitor is a health benefit (less eyestrain) and there are competitive pricing on larger formats due to international demand I don't see the logic. Then, lastly, ICT is a multiplier and a leveler, it empowers people, there should be NO tax on IT goods or alternatively they should rebate these goods for the benefit of the common man.
PCs, bandwidth and hosting should be 0% taxed, it stimulates education, understanding and business.

That would be a bonus for local assemblers - any idiot can put a computer together, whether they actually know how to make it run properly after that is another question.

Maybe owning a 27" screen isn't actually necessary, and should therefore be seen as a luxury tax? I get the point about being better for your eyes, but I did just fine with an 18" CRT for years. Anything over 20" and you're getting nailed - that's a bit harsh. 22" should be the cutoff point. Mine is 24", how big is yours. :p
What you peeps don't realize is that this government is going to nail anyone who can afford more than the 'usual', and just because you can afford a 27" screen means you're it. Is that going to stop you? I doubt it.
EDIT: No, Fudzy - the level of greed determines tax percentage.
this just show how competent the idiots in charge are that masses vote for

So there’s a 25% import tax even before the 7% A$$r4p3 tax.
Even without those 2 taxes there are shipping costs to get the TV/monitors to SA.
So one would think that if it cost the same to manufacture a TV/monitor in SA vs outside SA then the SA TV/monitor would be cheaper as there's no shipping costs.
So with shipping costs and 25% import tax the TV/monitor manufactured outside SA are still cheaper then locally produced, and only when a 7% tax is added swings the costs in favour SA made TV/monitors, then there is problem somewhere.
OR, it's just SARS scrapping at the bottom of the barrel to fund the gravy train. (seeing as nothing is made here, so no local market to protect)

That's exactly how I feel. [-]The Idiot[/-] Pravin has imposed this tax on SA with his usual clueless disregard for it's impact. Bigger monitors are one of the easiest and best productivity improvements a company can implement, and could help make SA competitive. But NOOOOOOoooooo, [-]The Idiot[/-] Pravin is only interested in punishing those evil taxpayers (both of them) who try to avoid his pointless TV tax, and couldn't care if his actions make half the country's office workers less productive and uncompetitive. Typical ANC minister - better suited to being a primary school headmaster.

So will a 16x10 monitor also get this higher tax?
So will a 16x10 monitor also get this higher tax?
Based on the explanations of the various industry players I've spoken to (LG, Samsung, Mustek), yes. Any video monitor regardless of aspect ratio or purpose attracts a 25% import duty and if any of its sides is longer than 45cm it gets the 7% ad valorem as well.

So, what do they actually make in SA by way of monitors that warrants this 25% import tax? I thought an import tax was designed to protect your locally produced goods from cheaply produced overseas goods? There is no sense here.

They make a profit on the 25% tax. Not anything useful like actual hardware at a good price
