I don't know if it's a rumour or what, but I was told if I tell my insurance company that I now work in IT - I may get lower insurance premiums on my car/house. True?

No way they would do that, its should be a same not dependant on where you work.

Why not? Typing is less hazardous than construction jobs! :p

so it's a rumour ... I thought maybe it was.

It should dependant on occupaton ... because some occupaions require a certain personality type - which could be higher or lower risk. IT for example is GENERALLY considered to be the quiet, nerdy typed.

Sales people are more outgoing GENERALLY and would tend to be more reckless

Your occupation (and education level) tends to affect your life insurance premiums a fair bit. Usually the biggest influence after smoking status, male/female, health status and age. Obviously varies from company to company. You then also often get a loading for dangerous hobbies.

Doubt however that it would affect your house/car. I cannot see why it would. I cannot really see that your house will be less likely to be robbed if you work in IT for example. The no claims bonus is the aspect that tries to differentiate between low and high risk takers.

You NOW work in IT? If by that you mean you previously worked elsewhere, were you a member of the bomb squad? If so, that would make sense! :D

But, jokes aside, insurance forms do have spaces for dangerous hobbies and high risk jobs. As for car / house, I do know that single males, living alone, would pay hogher premiums for car insurance than males with SO's and families.
