View Full Version : Voting System Full of it AGAIN
LabAnimal

The voting system was fine for some time, now again for the past month or so, it carries on telling me, "You've allready voted" This is getting frustrating as my opinion counts just as much as others, and i'm sure others are having the same problem.
This morning there are only 8 votes on the new topic, and i can't add my 2c worth!... Please fix this!!!

Clear your cookies
No offense or anything... But I *HATE* it when people tell me to do this... What about the other 10,000 web sites that I visit that save data in cookies?
I'm still battling to get all my 'cookies' back after I was told to do this more than 2 months ago... And it didn't resolve my problem either... hehehehe

well i seriously think the voting system should be per user login, not per ip address as it appears to be ... or am i wrong ?

That's like saying only members can vote? But surely cookies registered to an individual browser - not ip.

whichever, aslong as i can have my vote at the end of the day. i mean - common, a new vote comes up, there's only 8 votes by the time i get to it, and it says " You've allready voted" So tired of this.

Wish I could offer you a solution dude - reinstall your browser was mentioned! Grrr... :D and I noticed this - only because - when I looked - about the same time as you: the vote was 100% no retrenchments... me thought: ah, heavy voting by telkom! :D

LabAnimal, which service do you use for web access?

Some services have only one public IP for all its users. That makes IP based checking difficult.

Autowan - I've cleared cookies, I use Firefox. I've tried IE. this morning (04:00am) there are only 6 votes, and "YOU'VE ALLREADY VOTED" -Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Which poll are you trying to vote on?
LabAnimal

Any of the polls on any given day on this forum

I just voted on the IE7 poll. It tells me as well that I have already voted, BUT ... you can see which option you chose (printed in italics). So basically what I reckon is that after you have voted, and it has been recorded, it tells you that you have already voted, even if it was only 5 seconds earlier.
EDIT: Sorry, I might have jumped the gun a bit: Do you not even get the options to vote?

no i don't!. Every new poll put up on THIS website, i can't seem to vote on. I've tried IE6, i've tried the new IE7, i've tried Firefox which i mostly use. Sometimes it votes, sometimes it doesnt. I don't accept the fact that there is only 6 votes, sometimes only 3 votes in the morning and it says to me that i've allready voted. - THIS IS GETTING IRRITATING!.

Some service providers like iBurst AFAIK reflect one IP to the world for all of its userbase. This is for technical reasons (be they as dumb as can be) which will make any voting script checking IP's malfunction when one person on that network votes. Thus nobody else on that network can vote because the voting script thinks it is somebody coming in to vote twice.
It is a frustration that is being looked at. We can close the voting to only registered members but that would exclude guests to the site. I am for registered voting though, but this is bigger than just my opinion. :)
Your frustration is noted.

Might be that your dynamic IP was assigned to somebody before you, that voted already. Make no mistake, we need to sort this. Cannot have people eager to vote, not getting in...
:)
Looking into it...

Why doesn't the voting system work on username instead of ip address ?

Because then only members could vote. (everyone reading the forums can vote)

It is a way to encourage people to register. Many forums allow you to read threads, but you must register to be able to participate (comments, new threads and votes). Registration is free anyway and it will further MyADSL forum growth. Many fine minds and new ideas will enrich the forum by going this way.
How about having a poll on whether only registered users may vote?
I think you can already count a big "AYE" from Labanimal on this as again .. he will not be able to vote.

You sure? I'm sure I saw IC say that he wanted anyone to be able to vote without registering on another tread.
