The history between the two teams is more than likely unrivaled in world cricket. I cannot think of a test match better than england vs aus. Well not better perhaps bigger is a better word :D

Ok so if AB is out whom do we take as keeper for the ODIs? Boucher / Kuhn?
And for Tests who do play in ABs spot? I think I would opt for J. Rudolph as opener and every one then moves up.

Boucher. I wouldn't leave out a guy with that much experience, who's played in almost every possible situation. Need to use him as much as we can before he retires IMO.

I would take Kuhn in the ODIs as well as the T20.
Boucher has under performed imo for the last 3 years. A keeper in modern cricket can just not get away with scoring a 50 here and there.
If Boucher actually performs than hell yes, and in tests I will stick with him for a while more.

There are only 2 tests because CSA and CA felt that not getting in the way of the cl 20 schedule(aka know as BCCI money) was more important then having a good series.;)
The squad for the t20's and odi's are fine but someone really has to explain to me how smith justifies his selection above rudolph. I have no problem with smith in the test side but his t20 and odi form have been dismal for 12 months.

Morne is 32. Yes he might help us take the T20 WC next year BUT he will not play for another 3-4 years to represent SA at the 2015 CWC (ODIs).
Thus I think they are having a look at Kuhn as he is the best atm of the younger keepers.
stefan9
12-10-2011, 10:51 AM
Kuhn is a much better first class player then he is an limited overs player. But they want to get him involved because they seen him as bouch's replacement that's why he gets called for the t20's. He is not really suited since he lacks the big shots.
He is the best keeper/batsman of the young keepers. Smit of the dolphins is the better keeper but kuhn averages 45 in first class cricket which gives him a big edge.

I'm going to the Wanderers game.
I would have thought the Centurion games would get preference above the Wanderers games as it is so easy to get there now with the Gautrain etc. I would much rather go to Centurion games now than Wanderers, but they don't get game times that suites me.
And I am also a bit miffed about the lack of tests, but ja atleast I can go watch one.

I will think that AB will keep in Pro20's and ODI to make space for another Batsman / Bowler. In Tests I am hoping that it goes to Kuhn though.

Yeah Rudolph should be ahead of smith for t20 and odi. Smith hasn't played any real cricket since the wc(no club cricket is not sufficient prep) and has been in dreadfull limited overs form for a year.
Hopefully Gazza and co kick him to the side soon. He deserves his test spot but should be in the limited overs team.

Noted. However, both England and Australia are happy to play 'horses for courses'.
Therefore, I see no reason why the best man for the job should be selected for the T20's with a different player for the ODI's.

Darn good question, he won't be for long though. I have to say our team is poorly picked for a t20. Boy we don't bat far down and with smithers upfront we will be 1 down by the second over almost every game.
Things are looking very bad for us right now in terms of batting. Aussies have some amazing talent, marsh and watson should do some major damage on this tour.

Rudolph will make a big difference in the top order, Smith needs to go.
Also I think that Amla should have bowled Lopsy out earlier - he's not a death bowler. Otherwise I don't think that we played too badly. Smith's drop catch cost us 50-odd runs.

Amla needs to have a look at who bowls good upfront and bowl them out. There is no point saving destructive opening bowlers for later. Bowl them and get them out the way.
Sit down and figure out who can and who cannot bowl at certain times and then don't bowl them in the period if you feel they won't shine. Back your bowlers to their thing at the right time. Back them to destroy when they are most likely to. I am not a big fan of bowling 2 overs and then changing them, if they are going well why pull them off the job?
Smith needs to go for sure and we also seriously need to get a keeper who can bat, boucher was a legend as was gilchrist you could count on them to bat in any format or you knew they could bat in any format. Anyways it is a whole new chapter in SA cricket so i am sure we will get going soon enough.

Kallis and Steyn rested for the T20s, long summer ahead for them. Albie is injured as well. The only change we could have made was Rudolph in for Smith, and maybe a spot for Tahir.
The reason why Theron was expensive is because he was bowled at the wrong time. Lopsy should have finished his overs early on.

Morne and Rudolph must be the most unluckiest players when it comes to selection. SA has had a history of strange selections. Chosing morne for previous WC but not afterwards, or chosing guys like Rudolph 5 years ago for a few games and drop them again for no reason but then not choosing them again after proving themselves over a period of time. If you look at the success of the aussies and the age of some of the players, age should not be a problem if you are good enough as long as you have young players lined up.

Seems like Smith's drop may have cost us the match.
Didn't get to see the whole game, but heard commentators talking about his fielding being sub-par.
Also, I got the feeling he didn't chase down the one four-ball like the Proteas often do. It might have been beyond him, but he looked to be slowing down toward the ball and not really giving his all.
Pity.

Maybe Kirsten will be more flexible and willing to go with their calibre than the old tried and tested and somewhat rusty.
I feel that the best player should be chosen on merit. If someone isn't up to scratch, why not sit him out.
The worst it should do is make him determined to perform.

Smith should be dropped for levi for sunday's game. We need to have a rethink of our t20 lineup. We are a batsman light. Once miller and jp went their was no hitter left. Kuhn is a great first class batsman but he is not suited to limited overs cricket, he accumulates runs he doesn't score in big hits. Less said about botha and peterson's batting at international level the better.
Would like to see ryan mcclaren get a go with albie injured.
Rudolph should be drafted into the odi and test squad. In superb form already this season, 2 hundreds and a 90 in the ss series.

Agreed
Most of all his lack of playing a medium pace left armer still shows, he was weak against Zahir Khan and now Bolinger is exploiting it, if Bolinger makes it to the ODI format, Smith wont cope with him, not that Bolinger is in the same league as Zahir, but its the same style of bowling and im sure the Aussies have done their homework, Smiths dismissal was copy and paste from the last India tour.

I've never liked Smith, simply because of his arrogance. They should drop him as at this point in time (actually for quite some time from a batting point of view) he's just there so we can claim to have a full team.
He serves no purpose, I'm not saying that because of his performance last night. I'm also saying it because he's plays *** and now that he's no longer the captain he either needs to prove himself or GTFO.

I would LOVE rudolph to replace smith (at least for the ODIs and T20s).
Smith is no longer needed.
Also I must say last night's game was not a good one for the boys. But three positive things that I saw:
1) Morne looked great with the bowling and took the responsibility of the "Main" bowler.
2) Duminy seems to have settled very well into his batting role and both Miller and Ingrim looked okish.
3) This was a B-team. Drop smith, kuhn and peterson and add in AB, Albie and Steyn and tada!
Smith and Bothas drop catches cost us a lot. I am almost willing to bet that if smith held on to that (not to difficult) catch we would have won it.
Without Watson the Aussies are not nearly as great. I must also mention that Cummins bowled brilliantly for such a young guy, he did not try and blast out our batsmen but instead opted for a much smarter way to go about it.

T20 is there for me to expose some of the younger guys to international cricket. I feel that Kallis will not see the next CWC and we need to look to the future.
I might keep him on in the T20's till after next year's T20 WC, but not after that.

That was a great win yes. That is probably why they play Parnie because he can bat as well, but he must really lift his bowling game now. He was really expensive.
Rusty had a good game, little bit more expensive than I would like but atleast he got some wickets.
And I really think they should look into Lopsy at the death, he was by far our best bowler. Not a single boundary. When Steyn comes back, I think the death should be Steyn and Lopsy.

I'm not so sure about Lopsy at the death - line and length bowling at that stage of the innings might see the ball disappear. The reason why we bowled well yesterday (until that big over at the end) is because we throttled their batting and gave nothing away. This naturally led to wickets.

Rob Houwing, Sport24 chief writer
Cape Town – You’ve probably heard this one many times before, but the timely restoration of Jacques Kallis to the Proteas’ plans ought to restore sanity to their mainline batting department.
The veteran all-rounder turned 36 on Sunday, and might have spent part of his birthday watching the national side get out of jail at the Wanderers to share the Twenty20 international series – from which he was rested -- with Australia 1-1.
Deep down, coach Gary Kirsten and his charges will know that they were lucky not to be “swept” 2-0 by the Aussies, with some five overs of tail-end carnage in the Johannesburg match from Wayne Parnell and Rusty Theron – cool-headed and emphatic though it was – meaning that the tourists had to suddenly try to shove the cork back in the proverbial champagne bottle.
The Proteas were better beaten at Newlands than the scoreboard suggested, and when they slumped to 84 for seven late in the 14th over of their pursuit of 148 in the return fixture in the Bullring, another pasting seemed firmly on the cards until the eighth-wicket tornado which at least gave one or two frisky young Australian bowlers something of a reality check ahead of the ODI series.
The three encounters in that leg of the tour begin at Centurion on Wednesday, with each squad sporting a more experienced look than was the case in the T20 phase.
South Africa’s specialist batting over the past few days has looked unconvincing – although in the helter-skelter world of T20 that sometimes just happens anyway – and it was a situation not helped by still-obvious snags in terms of depth to the order as a whole.
Of the biggest names with the willow, only JP Duminy’s bright 67 off 53 balls at Newlands really served as a reminder of ability.
In the ODIs, the Proteas will be hoping that the injection of Kallis, in particular, and others like Faf du Plessis and Mark Boucher in the middle order, will give the XI a steelier look on paper as a batting collective.
Even without Dale Steyn, similarly given some deliberate “feet up” during the T20 series, the South African bowlers were reasonably convincing , with Lonwabo Tsotsobe certainly the stand-out for economy – he went for just four runs an over in maximum stints each time which is an amazing statistic in this form of cricket.
Off-spinner Johan Botha also shook off winter rust impressively, whilst Morne Morkel’s series was spoiled only by being thumped unceremoniously for three sixes in his last over at the Wanderers.
With someone like Albie Morkel still ruled out by injury, Kallis offers key balance with his customary ability to get through something close to a full spell if required as a medium-fast factor in ODIs, whilst the opportunity to see leg-spinner Imran Tahir ply his trade in local conditions will attract great interest amongst the South African public if conditions or team structure warrant his presence.
Wanderers batting hero Parnell remains a bit of an enigma: he is probably going to be duelling with Tsotsobe, most of the time, for one berth as a left-arm factor in both the ODI and Test plans.
At the moment the latter has an edge as a pure bowler, after Parnell was expensive in his opportunity at the Wanderers on Sunday, although the former SA U19 captain will always offer more at the crease – something beautifully illustrated on Sunday – and is also notably more mobile in the field.
That is an advantage not to be discounted in limited-overs cricket, where South Africa have a few less-than-ideal players for stealth and athleticism in the outfield ...

Whoa. Steyn struggling as well. Why are they struggling to swing the new ball? Without the movement he's not sure where to pitch the ball. Too early to be holding across the seam.
Even the white ball should move around early on, especially in those conditions. On the plus side, the track looks really flat and it's only gonna come on to the bat better as it flattens out more. The rain is still a worry...

Smith gone early, FFS why are we playing smith? We are basically going in a batsmen short every single fking time he plays.

Not sure how long before the coach figures this out. Or maybe there is some grand plan to sort out his gremlins? Playing across the line gets him early on, even when it's a dud decision :(

Bollinger to Graeme Smith, out Lbw!! That was plumb the moment the ball hit the pads. Fuller delivery on the stumps, Graeme Smith doesn't move his feet at all and is caught on the crease. The ball crashes into his pads and the umpire has no hesitation to give that out. Smith and Amla discuss about reviewing it, but in the end Smith walks away. It will be interesting to see if Hot Spot has caught anything. Graeme Smith lbw b Bollinger 4(5)
WTF are we still doing with this fat joker in the team?
Agreed. Open with JK and bring in another specialist batsman.

Watch Kallis' dismissal again. He rushed his downswing which resulted in the inside edge. Obviously we didn't do our homework on Cummins or Jacques decided not to bother. Cummins is deceptively quick and on a flat track the ball doesn't slow much off the pitch...

I don't believe that Faf du Plessis is the future of our middle order. His fielding is not up to scratch and he is far too technically flawed as a batsman to entrust him with a middle order responsibility.
Even the boundary to get off the mark was ridiculous. No foot movement at all and rushed the shot. He was lucky.
Here's hoping he proves me wrong...

Why would we have wanted to bowl first i wonder? Did we win the toss?
Perhaps the new kids can do something special with the help of our lower order, we normally need our lower order to win our games because the top fails. Nothing new to be 3 down so early.
Come on boys!!!!!!!!!! if i had a 100 bucks in my sportsbet account i would bet it on SA that is how confident i am :p

Your sexual preferences are of no concern to me. :p
He is so technically flawed - he needs a lot of work IMO. We need a few shake ups and I reckon Gary Kirsten will ring them if necessary. Smith needs to make way for Jacques Rudolph and work his way back into the team. Darren Smit to take over the gloves and bolster the middle order...

Interesting situation, considering GK went through quite a few arid spells as a left-handed opening batsman. He might find some affinity there...
