The Automobile Association of South Africa (AA) has put together a list of some of the most unknown fines in the book.

•If you run out of petrol and your vehicle is stuck in a position that obstructs traffic you can be fined R500 for obstructing traffic

•If you do not have an emergency triangle in your boot you can be fined up to R500

•You may not have a design or sticker within 150mm's of your license plate if it's not a component of the vehicle, this can be a fine of up to R1 000

•When crossing the border the AA will issue you with a ZA sticker, however some people display stickers on from other countries on their cars. Distinguishing signs of foreign countries are not allowed on South African registered vehicles, only the ZA sticker is allowed. This can land you a fine of up to R250

•If you have a learners license for your motorcycle you can get a R1 000 fine if you are caught carrying a passenger

•Having a souped up car is all the rage, but did you know if you alter any part of your car, like the suspension, add NOS, or increase the power, you have to have the car road worthy tested. If you don't, you can get a fine of R1 200 for altering the roadworthiness of your car

•It is illegal to operate a bicycle without a brake on the back wheel, this can see you getting a fine of R100

•It is illegal to drive with your fog lights on when the conditions are clear and there is good visibility. This can see you getting a fine of R500

•If you have an antitheft or antihijack device, you may not place it on your steering wheel as this has previously lead to accidents if accidently activated. The fine for this is R750

•You must always keep a safe following distance when driving behind another car. You can get fined up to R1 000 for following another car too closely

•If you fail to give immediate right of way to an emergency vehicle you can be fined R500

•If you are a cyclist, you can get a R100 fine for not wearing a helmet

•You can be fined R250 for transporting a person or animal on top of your vehicle (strange but true)

•You can be charged R1 500 for refusing to give a blood alcohol or breath test when asked to

link from m&g (http://mg.co.za/article/2011-11-02-fourteen-road-offences-you-could-get-fined-for)

or this could just be link to stuff that the metro piggies should check for, but don't cause speed trapping is easier

This for me is the winner of a fine right there.

You get fined for attempting to protect your own property, just because some other idiots have had accidents.

Surely under that logic, you should get a fine for driving because other people have had accidents whilst driving?

My GF's brother got fined R500 for not having the reflective triangle in his car last week.

I wish it happened more often, too many people think its cool to drive around with fogs on 24/7, like it makes them feel like the beeeg manne!! :P
I think I've used my fogs about 10 times in 3years, not even sure if they're working... :P

They should add one to the list:

R1000 for breaking down in the middle of the road and obstructing traffic. If you're a truck R2000.

And then this one too (which is possibly a real one already):

Operating any vehicle not intended for road use on the road R5000 (irritating when earth moving equipment can only manage 40kph on the open road)

This thread should be titled "Fourteen Things that the Metro Cops are clueless about and have no idea to look for!"

And I bet I can name fourteen other road offences that the Metro cops also completely fail to police.

You must always keep a safe following distance when driving behind another car. You can get fined up to R1 000 for following another car too closely

they should try enforcing this with the blue light brigade, those *********s drive so close to each other you couldn't fit an emergency triangle between them

You'll see a ton of these every time you enter the Transkei along with gross overloading.

What's more, the pigs trap for speeding on the N2 at a busy intersection with school kids jaywalking all around them. But yeah - trapping is easier.

I was fined by Metro for farting in my car. I don't see that one on the list...

I think that relates to the standard fine for not wearing your seatbelt. They really should start building cameras for catching people not wearing their seatbelt. I don't care if some folks go at 250+ km/h, as long as they wear their seatbelt its all good.

Well sorry to say, but I drive with mine on ALL the time at night. So many things lying next to the road and potholes etc, makes visibility a lot better!!

Luckily you are not in or around my neighborhood. Nothing quite so satisfying as "disabling" fog lights of people who use them at in appropriate times ;)

For some reason I always thought you were just not allowed to modify your car to improve its performance. Like at all. Didnt realize it just needed a roadworthy test afterwards.

Its a bit silly though, because roadworthies are not valid forever. So imagine if I turbo charge my car and have it roardworthied, what happens when the road worthy expires? How do I prove that I modified it before doing the roadworthy and not the other way around?

oh how i would love to do that too. it irritates the crap out of me when people have fog lights pointing up. in clear night time weather. under street lights.

nothing mentioned about the people who strap two blue stars to the front of their cars and burn retinas as the drive along?

i doubt anyone will ever get fined for the following distance, because the kzn traffic cops love intimidating you out of their way. no lights, no siren, no following distance.

I drive with my lights often during the day, expecially when I drive between cities. You lot are such bad drivers (yeah yeah, every dude with a penis thinks his Michael Schumacker)... I dont trust you and the better you can see me, the better off I am.

My personal favorite "on the fly" means of sorting out people is just to spray/wash the windows, that really gets tailpipe gunners to GTFO.

Strangely I would probably also break some even more serious laws if I caught someone vandalising my car...

The escalations, lol.

This is probably how it all started in the Middle East. Achmed went to knock out Abdulaah`s lantern, Abdulaah catches Achmed and today we have the cluster fk that is known as the Middle East :D

As far as I know the one about the reflective triangle is for cars registered after 2006 sometime, so any car bought and registered before 2006 should be exempt from it.

I wonder how they fine people without cars ?

I mean a bike does not have a license plate so how do they track you ? Its not illegal to drive around without your ID and you don't need a drivers license for a bicycle.

They only do it if you look like the kind of person that have a good income and a fixed address. My one cousin got fined for J-walking in the road opposite his school. He was 15 at the time and still had to pay a R150 fine.
