Introduction

Telkom has a fixed-line SMS service available with fixed-line to fixed-line SMSs costing 30c per message and fixed-line to mobile SMSs costing 45c per message. Delivery Reports are free. The cost is cheaper than sending from a mobile phone (if you don't subscribe to your mobile phone service provider's SMS plans) so if you send a large number of SMSs, this is a viable option.

If you have an ISDN Basic Rate Access line and an ISDN Terminal Adaptor, there is a software application available from Deutsche Telekom (in German only) that allows you to send & receive SMSs on your PC. Use the instructions below to get the software working with Telkom SMS.

Requirements

ISDN Basic Rate Access (BRA) Line with 2 or 2a Network Terminator (NT)
IndentiCall (Caller Line Indentication (CLI)) Service and SMS Service
Personal Computer (PC) with Microsoft Windows 98, Me, 2000 or XP
ISDN Terminal Adaptor (TA) with CAPI 2.0 drivers
T-Com MMS Software (link provided below)

Instructions

Setup

Telephone 10219 or 10217 to activate the IdentiCall Service (R9.85 p/m) and SMS Service (free)
Download and install T-Com MMS from http://www.telekom.de/dtag/downloads/t/T-ComMMS0405.exe
Open T-Com MMS
Click on the Einstellungen [Settings] icon
On the ISDN tab the alle eingenhenden Anrufe [All incoming calls] radio button should be selected
On the SMS-Zentralen [SMS Centres] tab, click the Neue Zentrale [New Centre] icon (the one with the little star)
In the Bezeichnung [Designation] text box type Telkom (Incoming)
In the Nummer [Number] text box type 0881091969
Click OK
Click the Neue Zentrale again
In the Bezeichnung text box type Telkom (Outgoing)
In the Nummer text box type 1091969
In the Bestätigungcode [Confirmation code] text box type *DR*
Click OK
Both the Telkom (Incoming) and Telkom (Outgoing) names should now appear in the SMS-Zentralen box
Click Telkom (Outgoing) to highlight it and click the als Standardzentrale definieren [Use as default Centre] icon (the one with the yellow tick)
To enable Delivery Reports, click the Bestätigung anfordern [Request confirmation] tick box
When sending a message that is longer than 160 characters, click one of the following radio buttons to determine what will happen to the message:

nicht zulassen [do not accept]
beim Versenden nachfragen [prompt before transmission]
automatisch aufteilen [split up into several messages]

Click OK

Sending an SMS

Click Neue SMS [New SMS], the SMS senden [Send SMS] window appears
In the Empfänger [Receiver] text box type the 10-digit telephone number (to test the service, you can enter your own telephone number)
In the Nachricht [Message] text box type the message

When typing a message, the Zeichen [Characters] value will increase as each character is typed
If the Zeichen value becomes more than 160, the SMS will exceed 1 message and the Nachrichten [Messages] value will reflect this

Click Abbrechen [Cancel] to abort or OK to send the message:

If the message is less than 160 characters, the message is sent immediately
If the message is longer than 160 characters, 1 of 3 things will happen, depending on what radio button was selected during Setup above:

If nicht zulassen [do not accept] was selected, a window will appear with the warning Die Nachricht ist zu lang [The message is too long], click OK to go back and shorten the message
If beim Versenden nachfragen [prompt before transmission] was selected, a windows will appear with the question Die Nachricht ist zu lang für eine SMS. Sol sie in mehrere SMS aufgeteit werden ? [The message is too long for an SMS. Split into multiple messages ?], click OK to split into several messages and send, or click No to go back and shorten the message
If automatisch aufteilen [split up into several messages] was selected, the message will be split up into several messages without confirmation and sent
The message now appears in the journal
The journal has the following column headings: Datum [Date], Rufnummer [Number Called], Teilnehmer [Participant], Betreff [Reference], Meldung [Message], Größe [Size]
If the message is sent successfully, the Meldung column of the journal entry will state Gesendete SMS [SMS Sent]
If not, the icon to the left of the journal entry will have red circle with a white x and the Meldung column will state Versand der Kurznachricht gesscheitert [Dispatch of short message failed]
To resend, double click on the journal entry, the SMS will appear, click the Erneut versenden/Weiterleiden [Dispatch again/Forward icon on the top left
The SMS senden windows appear, click OK, the SMS will be sent again

Receiving an SMS

Just keep the software opened, unfortunately, there is no minimize to system tray option
When a new SMS is received, it will appear in the journal with the journal entry stating Neu empfangene SMS in the Medlung column and the icon to the left of the journal entry will have a yellow asterisk
To view the new SMS, double click the journal entry

Notes

If Delivery Reports are enabled, the initial length of the message will always be 4 as the confirmation code, *DR*, becomes part of the message
If an SMS is sent to a number that is not SMS-enabled, it will be converted to a voice message (in English only)
If Multi Subscriber Number (MSN) is enabled on the ISDN line, the SMS will only work on the main number and not on any of the MSNs
If T-Com MMS needs to be used on several PCs connected to a Local Area Network with only one PC on the network having an ISDN TA installed, a software project called capi20proxy can be used, visit http://capi20proxy.sourceforge.net for more information
