Hi
I see there is a lot of discussion on SMTP servers at the moment.
If you have a device using different methods of accessing the internet, using the correct SMTP server is important.
Each ISP provides a SMTP server for it's users, but you generally can't use a SMTP server from another provider.
Here are a few options
1) Change the SMTP server settings manually as you switch providers.
2) Use smtp.uls.co.za as your outgoing server. This FQDN changes dynamically depending on the ISP you're using. This will only work if you're using your device in SA. See here (http://news.uls.co.za/2011/04/introducing-smtp-uls-co-za/)for more details.
3) Some ISPs provide SMTP authentication. This is the best/most robust option.
Here are a few that I know of.
**Vodacom - smtp.vodamail.co.za, username = cellnumber@vodamail.co.za & password your vodamail password. You need to set up your vodamail address at www.vodamail.co.za (http://www.vodamail.co.za)
**MWEB - relay.mweb.net, username & password = your mweb email address and password.
**GMAIL - look here (http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&ctx=mail&answer=12103)
As far as I know telkom/saix does not provide SMTP authentication. MTN does provide authentication via mail.mtn.co.za, but it still only works from the MTN network.
Most providers use port 25 for SMTP. Some however provide alternatives like 587. This is handy if port 25 is blocked by the ISP.
It's also worth noting that the authentication details are not actually bound to your "From" email but it's not advisable to use it in this manner.
Hope this helps someone, feel free to add to this info.
