Does anyone know something about MyTV? see http://www.mytvafrica.tv/ and http://www.lyngsat.com/pas10.html

Theres not a lot of info. Some subscription service starting soon with sport, movie and music channels. Its on the PAS10 satellite.

Are they the same as the BEStv service?

Monochoice must get competition soon... their getting a R20 price hike on the monthly rental in April. Then they give you kåk like Big Brother Nigeria . The price increase is due to an increase in operational costs which include, amongst others, marketing and technology costs, changes to operational and infrastructure costs, new innovations, product expansions and socio-economic responsibilities affected within MultiChoice. Quoting them...
WTF

Tune your DSTv decoder into Sentech, Novacom, FTV, BTV (and MyTV??) and youll get a few more channels... these are free to air. I like the Extreme Sports Channel.

The Reason MyTV is in Botswana is 'cos of ICASA and DSTV. The Regulatory process is so slow that you will be bankrupt by the time ICASA give a ruling. thus Botswana! .. 2 week application and Viola! you are legal there.

Take a look at the European Satellite market. there is NO-WAY-IN-HELL that DSTV or ICASA is going to stop the people getting smartcards here in SA. (Follow the Dont-Panic court hearings... selling smartcards does not constitute broadcasting)

See http://www.extremesa.co.za/Novacom%20Tunning%20with%20Multichoice%20box.doc
Note that I had to change the LNB frequency to get it. You can test the signal strength after you had put in the parameters.

To get some more frequencies see http://www.lyngsat.com/pas10.html and http://www.lyngsat.com/pas7.html . Those that are beamed to Africa on PAS10 and Southern Africa on PAS 7 you ought to get with a DStv decoder. It also need to be Ku-band frequencies. Also note that these channels change alot - sometimes they are there and sometimes they are missing.

If I were to buy a used DSTV decoder to play around with, what model should I avoid and what model is the ideal one to check out the Novacom line up? Also, can this be done without a smartcard?

You can use your regular DSTV decoder, I'm not sure which to avoid but mine is about 7 years old and it works. Its in the public PAS7 bouquet. It works without a smart card the last time I checked, ie it still works if you pull out the smartcard.

SABC and E-TV are encrypted with Nagravision. The standard DSTV decoder is IRDETO, so unless its a free-to-air channel or a irdeto encrypted system, the dstv decoder is useless. If you want to get just the SABC/ETV channels from DSTV, then you need to pay them... dunno how much,

I have a subscription with the PAS7 Sat feed. I'm not sure which company actually owns it but we get a couple of free channels along with it. Though those channels are foreign. My mom watches it for the news and stuff and it works for her.

Just bought a satellite decoder and a smart card then pay subscription and we can watch it.

I had to set the LNB from hi to low or vice versa, cant remember. Its in this http://www.extremesa.co.za/Novacom%20Tunning%20with%20Multichoice%20box.doc document. After I set the LNB you will be able to get Novacom (Extreme Sports) and DSTv still.
