Hi, what type of DMX controllers/interfaces are the mobile DJs using? We're a few DJs working together/sharing jobs and use some DMX-enabled lighting equipment (lasers, dimmer packs, strobes, etc) and we're thinking of using DMX to ease setup and have more fun with the lighting effects. I've been looking at the Enttec DMX USB Pro (http://www.enttec.com/index.php?main_menu=Products&prod=70304&show=description) with some open source software to control the lights, which can be ordered for about R1700.

My standard audio setup:
Denon MC6000 & Sennheiser cordless mic
Traktor 2 LE on Dell i3 notebook with SSD
Backup: Celeron 900 netbook with Winamp and external soundcard
Speakers: 2x JBL PRX515 + 2x JBL PRX518S bins (as needed)

So I'm in need of USB/MIDI mixing console, one which is really good but won't blow my wallet.
What are you suggestions?

Where can I find a second hand mixing console?

My friend was about to sell he's one for R1.8k to upgrade, but then it got water damaged. Not sure about the specs right now. But think it was just under R3k new. I'll ask and update. But he should know cheaper too. Its his profession, so he knows more about this stuff than me.

take a look at the denon mc3000?
it should be reasonable considering its two channel.. the 4 channel goes for 8k?

im sure you should be able to get hold of a ****rol s4 as well at a decent price, since theres a new version out, and stores will still have old stock

whats your budget?

seems like a good thread to vent tho :)
getting gigs in this country is incredibly frustrating if you dont know the right people
i've pretty much given up, promoters/club owners are probably flooded with demos from people, so the odds of them even listening to yours are slim

Nice! I've heard good things about Traktor, but haven't actually used it...

I've recently got FL10 and am now starting to teach myself how to make my own tracks on it... Previously i also used Virtual DJ and used to play Minimal/Tech House. Never got round to actually getting myself a decent setup as i only do this in my spare time as a hobby (if i can call it that...)

you'll need atleast 6k-8k for something decent, unless you settle for cheap and nasty, like hercules

If you can afford those more expensive controllers then go for it, but unless you're after the 4 channels extra I doubt there is much difference in sound quality and functionality between the lower priced budget controllers.

The Numark Mixtrack Pro is decently priced and is a damn fine controller, same for some of the Geminis like this one >> http://www.soundz.co.za/pGEMI-CTRL7/Gemini-CNTRL-7-USB-MIDI-DJ-Controller-with-Soundcard--NEW.aspx

I agree it is pretty expensive in the beginning, once you have the controller, a decent set of monitor speakers, headphones etc etc :) But its damn good fun ++

For entry level Numark Mixtrak pro (http://djmixclub.co.za/Main.asp?D={1580AEA9-C882-477D-B2E1-C391E19C4348}&PageType=Product&SKU=NUMMIXTPRO&CategoryID=154) without a doubt. It the best entry level controller.Goes for R2500 or so,if you are in CT,Frontline (in Maitland) can do for roughly R2200.

The MC3000 do 4 channels through the software,if you really need it.

Stay far away from anything Gemini and Hercules.

Went to a store and was told about the Numark Mixtrack Pro, so maybe I'll go for that.
Just some nOObish questions.

What's the difference between a 2 channel and 4 channel?

Oh yes what exactly is the timecode? I've seen people been able to control the set with Pioneer turntables just by plugging in they soundcard to the turntable and nothing else extra. Is this the use of timecode? What kind of soundcard do I need? I currently have a Maya44 USB, is this sufficient?

Hardware mixer - One got 2 channels for incoming signals and the other have 4. :)
You either can use 2 channels for the software or all 4,or use 2 for the virtualdj and the other 2 for external sources like cd players in case your software crash.
Software - Using the MC3000 as an example - It's a 2 channel controller BUT you can play with 4 DECKS in the software by flipping through the decks using the same 2 channels.
Channel is Deck A/C and channel 2 is Deck B/D.For most people 4 channels is a waste, unless you want to use it for backup.

With time code you control the software with cd's or vinyls which contain the tone signal. However, timecode has limited use. When using timecode on cd you can't use your cdjs built-in effects, auto beat loop and master tempo. You'll have to use these in the software.VDJ's timecode is free on the website if you use cd players. If you use turntables you need to buy the time code vinyls. With timecode you can't control video, well you actually can but you need an expensive midi mixer to move the crossfader.

Maya44 is perfect. It was so popular that they brought it back after it was discontinued. If you have cd players and mixer all you need is the laptop.Since you are looking into budget friendly options, rather go for the mixtrack pro.

Well its simple really; with a 2 channel mixer you'll have 2 inputs (2 cd player/turntables/laptop audio) or in the case of the Numark, 2 outputs; this means you'll need a separate to plug into.
With 4 channel, same as above, except its 4.

Timecode is an audio code stored on vinyl or cd that gets interpreted by the software. For interest sake, it is tone, generally 1200Hz with addititional timestamps. The speed of the media (cd/vinyl), relates to the frequency i.e at 1000Hz, the pitch will be lower. The timestamps indicate whether the media is moving forward or backward. This is my interpretation/over simplification and is not admissible in court.

The maya interface will be perfect (i think); I've had success just running a phono signal from turntables into my laptop. In theory it should'nt work, as the signal is required to be line level. I have'nt even used the software phono pre-amp. It may be an anomaly.
Anyway, what you'll need is a copy of http://www.mixxx.org
Its a free dj software, which timecode capable (only serato at this stage)
A copy of timecode, downloadable from serato scratchlive site (last I checked), which you'll burn to cd. Or a serato scratchlive vinyl.
Plug the cd/record players into your interface and you should have a diy Digital vinyl system.
Thats the theory of course.

It will be cheaper to with the Numark though, unless you have access cd/record players.

Cheers

Where do most of you guys get your music from? I'm talking about house, electro etc.
If you go to a CD store your most likely to get a compilation of songs and more even the songs may mixed by some other DJ, which we don't want :p

More so, how do you guys keep up with the latest music? By this I mean how do stay ahead of the curve in music trends? Do you listen to radio constantly, billboard charts?

@Tsume: None of the stuff i like can be found in music shops, I do most of my downloading via peer to peer, if i like what i hear and i want to use it in a set I will go and buy a high quality version of it on Beatport. I tend to sift through loads of crap before i find a winner tune, if i had to buy all that music i'd be bankrupt. But at least i support the artist with the tunes I really like.

I just got a projector, so using VDJ I can play and mix videos like I see late at night on Channel O. Unfortunately I don't have that many quality music videos. Is there any effect which I can get which will keep them screen busy like some acidy/rave stuff while I just play normal mp3s?

Oh yeah, does any have the Pioneer 2000 skin for a 1280x768 screen? I have the skin but the one I have is to large for my screen.

For those using software, which do you prefer?
The Traktor interface just seems to get more complicated with each release, so I ended up using Virtual DJ and each release is way better than the last.

I just got Serato Intro and I like the fact it's main focus is to make it easier to use the controller. Maybe it's just my version but I couldn't find out how to preview a track and I think if you try let the software synchronize songs for you it always seemed to choose the wrong bar in the song to synch with.

I'll try the new Tracktor sometime this week, I've got the LE version, last time I tried it was with the scratch pro.

When just fooling around entertaining myself I use Virtual DJ - don't think I'd use it live if and when I go live. Have been trying to get into Traktor, with a Behringer controller, works well - better than Virtual DJ. Tried to bridge Traktor into Ableton with software - Jack v1.9.7 (don't have money for Rane) and then do stuff at the same time with a novation launchpad and a apc40, that's my ultimate dream - and some other toys - a kp3 and kaossilator maybe. It's more than a 1 man job all this.

Producing: Ableton Live/Cubase
Dj'ing: Ableton Live

:D

I like Traktor but setting up my Xone 4D is extremely time consuming because you have to map each midi controll through the midi properties and end up just downloading a template anyways. Ableton's Midi learn is the bomb, just click learn, turn or press whatever you want assigned and presto. Not too mention you can adjust maximum and minimum values on each controll.

If it as in the picture (with pad lights on) then I'd say it seems good. Most pad controllers only light up once you actually hit the pad, which will be a problem if your DJ'ing in dark clubs/parties. Look at some youtube videos of people using it, if the pads do stay on then I'd say go for it

I know in ableton you can setup controller scripts that keep pads on. I found one on the interwebs for my apc40 that keeps the pads on and changes it to note mode.

Pretty awesome midi controller that, very similar in compactness to the Vestax typhoon, apart from the stupid fader EQ on the typhoon that is. Also have extremely accurate jog sensitivity and doesn’t drift. Numark is really starting to show pioneer the finger in regard with pricing. It has really come too that point where a decent audio interface, laptop and mixing console costs why cheaper than something like a single CDJ 2000. WTF pioneer?

Anyways for those who love Dubstepness here's a 38 min mix I made a while ago:

Aaah i see... Thanks :)

Is it possible to make anything decent just using Virtual Dj and keyboard shortcuts or does one need something like the Mixtrack Pro? I'm just getting into this for fun and something to do after working hours, so i wanna keep it as cheap and simple as possible for now and if i really get into it, then look at getting all the extras from there...

I'm very into house music (Deep/ Tech/ Minimal/ Funky) and have a rather good knowledge of what the banging tracks out there are... Alot of my mates come to me to suggest songs to add into their mixes and playlists for them... Tell me something... Do you tidy your mixes up after recording them using a program like Audacity, or is what i heard purely what you recorded with Virtual DJ?

No I don't "tidy" them. If I made a huge error. When I started making these mixes I would just allow an error to happen, sometime the listen doesn't actually know you weren't suppose to that. I allowed this to happen cause most of the mixes are just randomly pick a song from my library and mix. But when I prep songs before I know what its suppose to "sound" like, so if I make a mistake I restart the whole mix

Anybody got one of these Maschines?:

http://www.absolutemusic.co.uk/store/skins/Neutrino/php/getImg.php?src=/store/images/uploads/additional/natmaschine_01.jpg

I want to buy this thing but can’t really figure out what makes it different or more special than any other sample pad controller.

It's not just a sample pad controller, Maschine is the hardware unit + the software.

It has recently been updated to integrate with this:

http://www.orangemusic.co.za/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=4427

Which I have. Would love to get one, but I think I'll wait until the next revision of the hardware comes out. Oh, and also when I have more than 20 cents to my name.

Aaaanyway, what am I doing in a DJ thread?!

Hey! I'm saving up to buy my first set of equipment to go with my Traktor software, but need some advice and suggestions on options. My budget is going to be a bit limited when starting up but as time goes by (and gigs hopefully start rolling in), I'll upgrade to better stuff.

I've been doing some research and the first thing I'm wanna buy is a DJ Controller and new laptop (only for my music collection). I have temporary access to amps, speakers and the other DJ setup components through a friend.

But anyway, the DJ controller that stood out for me is the Numark Mixtrack Pro: http://www.numark.com/product/mixtrackpro

Any experience with this system?

And suggestions of SA retailer where to purchase equipment would also be appreciated, preferably in Cape region.

Thanks in advance!

Yep. What is said above is true. But as will things they have they ups & downs.
There is a lot of hate in the DJ field (for laptop DJs especially). But you yourself must be prepared.
When I go out and meet other DJ's i try and get as much advice as I can, I stand behind them and watch them play.

Mmm, Denon & Pioneer are a bit expensive in my eyes. For a good reason though, I will admit the pitch control on the Numark Mixtrack Pro could do with some refinement, when practicing beatmatching I can never get BPM to match exactly all the time even when I'm looking at the screen directly. The BPM either jumps a bit higher or lower than what I want

Well there is for me. I'm actually taking this quite serious, so I would kill for Pioneer 350 CDJs and a mixer

To answer your question about entry level equipment, going the laptop controller with a built in sound card is the way.
And if you do happen to get the money to buy a CDJ, you don't have to burn CDs. You can use timecodes to play music from your computer while using the CDJ to control the mixing. Most DJs who love the use of vinyls but dont want the carry cases go this route by using timecode vinyls e.g DJ Premier

But really, if you have a controller you dont have to worry about having to deal with the all too often surprise of broken equipment

also, a cdj is not any closer to vinyl than a controller, the only benefit i see is not having to lug around a controller

Haha I know the gigs are gonna be the toughest to come by. The supply and demand ratio has never been in our favor (unfortunately). I used to do it back in university through some connections I had and considering just getting back into things through those channels. Though I need a LOT of practice... A Mixer? Or a Controller? I would think you're referring to a Controller is your primary source of the sound is software based.

There are tons of controllers out there, it really depends on the budget you have at hand. And in terms of the software (not that I use any), I am leaning towards Traktor (since I've checked out most others) and would suggest something that is compatible with that.

A friend was sampled to start playing around with a product from Reloop "Jockey 3 ME", which is quite an interesting tool compared to other in it's price range. Have a look at the reloop site, as they have more affordable controllers as well and a host of other products on their site.

If I decide to buy one, it would be that. :)

Yes. Stay clear from Gemini DJ products, I've never used them but everyone I know who has seems to regret buying them after a while

Lovely thread, i learn t alot by reading your opinions on mixers.

Im definitely going with either the Numark or Gemini mixer in the R2500 range at Musica.

Sorry for a derail, but knowbody talks about speakers.

Im going back to the Karaoke DJ arena and i will NEVER buy Cash Crusaders Dixon brand, but i am looking for really affordable 15' DJ speakers.
Preferably active speakers as im not employing a helper to help me load equipment, or mismatch the eaquipment but getting an amp not made for the speaker i intend to purchase.

Somebody on here gave this link for DJ equipment and i took a keen interest on these speakers:

http://djmixclub.co.za/Main.asp?D=%7B4D39F01E%2D2C8E%2D405F%2D8629%2D329E B9998186%7D&PageType=Product&SKU=QTXPAJ15A&CategoryID=38

QTX PAJ 15A Active 15.

I wonder if any DJ here knows about or have used them?

I have heard qtx passive speakers before. They are not bad for an entry level product. However,i don't think active is the way to go here.

1 With active all your controls are at the back of the speaker, unless you'll be using an external mixer.BTW,the one in your link only has tone control on your mic.
2 Most active speakers don't have fans but just a heatsink. If you overdrive them, the amp shut down for protection.I know people that had to carry a desk fan with them, even with more decent ones.

I would suggest, for portability, get a mixer with built-in amp and passive speakers.Be careful though, most entry level ones are mono.

Nope. That's more for like if your just want to smoothly transition from the end of one song to the beginning of another

You'll still have to look at what you're wanting to get out of the gadget you're wanting. If all you need is to just mix tracks via a software program, then yes, this would be fine, just as tsume has pointed out.

However, you have a comment about wanting to play with loops and all sorts of other things, then you're really needing to do a lot more research as to what gadget does that for you. I know that the Pioneer, ReLoop and Numark stuff has features like that at their higher model controllers, so there is a start. But what you've shown in the link, is just to mix tracks. Simple.

I'm not sure I'm hearing the suggestion here. Demon Angel wants to do Karaoke, and we're busy advising them on what to or not to consider, without knowing fully what their set up consists of or how big/small it needs to be. This is a bit odd. In Demon Angel's post, they ask about an active speaker, which can easily work for many different type of applications and also be very portable. So even the QTX (or even EONs for that matter) would be fine for this, depending on how they intend to use them.

Being advised to look for a "mixer with a built in amp" (what type of mixer would that be exactly?) is strange to me, when you're considering a solution that effectively has an amp in it (active speaker). And whether any speaker or amp runs hot (or not) depends on various things. The make / brand quality. The setup you're using them in. And how much you abuse (or don't) the speakers. There's no general rule that applies to ALL (or even most of) active speakers that they'll "run hot" and you need a desk fan. I've used EON (the first series) for many events and have had never needed a single desk fan in the vicinity.

So Demon Angel, if you can maybe elaborate on what equipment you have currently, and how you use it, and why you're considering active speakers, it would be better to give advice that way.

Your post is somewhat confusing but i'll try to make sense of it.

True,he asks about actives,he mentioned portability.I never said actives would not work,i said actives is IMO not the best way to go,especially the price point he is aiming at.

Powered mixer. And the reason i've suggested is for various reasons:

1) It still gives you portability.Amp is still built-in but heat dissipation is way better with ventilation holes and fans.
2) It gives you decent bass, treble control plus effects like reverb on mics.Important,he did say he'll do karaoke.
3) It gives you options for more mics.Again, with karaoke in mind.Duets

And whether any speaker or amp runs hot (or not) depends on various things. The make / brand quality. The setup you're using them in. And how much you abuse (or don't) the speakers.
Amps do run hot, that's normal. How to manage that heat should be your concern.I did specifically mention overdrive.

I never said that.Heat thing is a no brainer.I'm not against actives but if i ever bough an active it would be a decent high end one with better heat protection.Heat is the no1 enemy of any amp.

It is free advise. He can still buy active speakers,it's his decision. But i think he would want to know pros, cons, other options, anything that can help him making a better decision.

Hi Guys,

A friend of mine is also a Bedroom DJ. I want to create a Soundcloud account on his behalf. What is the legal implication involved for sharing remixed songs by popular knows artists online?

You'd be breaking copyright law. But that doesn't mean people are on gonna sue you. Soundcloud will simply take down your recording if they detect any copyright infringement. I use mixcloud

At the end of the day any drum machine/MIDI pad controller will do the same job. Like the Akai MPD18 MIDI Controller or the Traktor Kontrol F1
So you need to ask yourself are you specifically looking for the fight controller or a MIDI device to activate/deactivate sounds?

The MAIN use is going to be for effects control in Traktor. Maybe some cue points or samples, but Effects is mainly the issue for me.
