Got my nine year old into RTS games (relief from PS3)
His laptop is about 6 years old so not very powerful, hence looking for older games.
He is currently playing "LOTR: BFME 1" and enjoying it immensely and have Warcraft III lined up next :)
Specifically looking for:
1. Starcraft
2. Age of Empires III
3. Battle for Middle Earth II
PS: X DVDS and Games closing shop in Claremont so now going to have drive all the way to Plumstead for cheap game swapping :( bah!

Look at Empire Earth 1&2.
You can also download C&C Tiberian sun for free (legal). Come to think of it I think EE1 is free & legal too for download.
Warcraft III is old? About 10000000000000000 people are still playing the MMO version of it online....
But yes, www.gog.com is probably your best bet. Or Steam. Or Gamersgate. Online stores/services will have a much better selection than any physical shop.

I don't think exposing a 9 year old to WoW is a good move for a parent...

3 RTS games that I really enjoyed back in the day
Act of War (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Act_of_War:_Direct_Action): Game + stand alone expansion Available @Steam (http://store.steampowered.com/app/2710)
C&C Generals Zero Hour (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Command_%26_Conquer:_Generals_%E2%80%93_Zero_Hour) Found in "The First Decade" Compilation packs. New one coming 2013, Known as G2
Total Annihilation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Total_Annihilation) The inspiration for Supreme Commander series. They could never get SC & SC2 to match the TA game especially because of the lack of user mods. I remember running a Mech mod back in the day, replacing all the units of my game into mechs from the Battletech (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BattleTech) universe. Available @ GOG.com (http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/total_anihilation_commander_pack)
Edit: Oh crap how can I forget the cream of the crop aka Homeworld (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homeworld).
Dam now that is a game I wish I could get again, but updated to today's FX. Looking at the Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homeworld_2#Sequel), it might still be possible.

Ah, the good ol' days!:o
Homeworld was awesome....think I might have the game somewhere...
What about Disciples? Evil Genius?
And Perimeter? Cossacks (great game!)? Port Royale? Settlers? Stronghold?
Not strictly RTS I guess (besides Cossacks), but could still be fun ;)

What about Disciples?
Disciples isn't an RTS, it's turn-based.

Also Earth 2150 and 2160.... Really loved the research component of that, then building your own warmachines :)
EDIT: I hope this is the right name, but anyone else remember Dark Reign? Enjoyed that as well!

It came out in 2001 IIRC, thats 11 years. Thats pretty ancient for a game.

another one I would look at, Ground Control 1/2
not exactly our usual RTS style of base building and such, but still a lot of fun.

I used to play a game called Nox which is similar gameplay to Diablo but without all the "unsavoury for 9 year old's" elements. :)

Warcraft III does not equal World of Warcraft. The only thing they have in common is the theme and some of the lore.

Act of War was a great game, very good story - High Treason was a load of crud as a expansion pack.
The Act of War game is great though and worth $10, just don't buy HT unless you really have to.
With that said, Steam, GOG etc all have great bargains on 'older' games :)

I am so glad I registered my Blizz games. I dont need to keep the CD's anymore and when I feel like playing any of the oldies I just log into battle.net and go download the game I wanna play. The site keeps record of my CD-keys so I am sorted.
Age of Empires 2. Also, turn-based like the Civilisation series.
Depending on how old, Sim Golf (also Sid Meiers).
