View Full Version : New card: Sim not ready error

Hi Vodacom3G and others

I have just got my new HSDPA enabled data card, but there seems to be some problem with my laptop. The card connects on one laptop, but when I move it to the other one it flashes blue, but does not connect and gives the error “Sim not ready”. I was never prompted for a pin, but I was not prompted for a pin on the other machine either…

Ideas?

I spoke with rpm and it seems to be an issue with the one specific laptop, probably a resource clash.

One of the Vodacom Data Support specialists made a date with rpm to help him with this tomorrow morning.

In device manager, look for conflicts under 'ports and coms'. This normally occurs when you have bluetooth enabled. If so, best to move coms for both 3g card coms to upper regions (50 +) and reboot.

Hope that sorts you out.

"Sim not ready" doesn't sound like a resource problem to me. If it's a resource problem you shouldn't be able to get info on the Sim at all.

The pin is disabled, you can always go and enable it again..."tools - pin request"

Sim error , maybe sim card upside down, I know it sounds stupid but it needs to be checked...

Then also check to see the sim is the right way round like not back to front..

Those are the probably only error messages for sim card errors..

I think it's safe to say if it was a Sim problem it wouldn't work on either laptop.

I'm trying a stab in the dark here. Is it possible that the laptop that does work is the same one you used with your old card. This would explain why you didn't need to enter the pin code, because you are using the same Sim as you always do. The laptop that doesn't work, is it one on which you haven't used that Sim before. If so you would have to enter the pin code.

This might seem obvious, but it can easily be overlooked.

Thanks for all the feedback. Unfortunately nothing worked…took it to Vodaworld data centre and they quickly gave up…they had no idea what the problem may be.

For those interested, the problem laptop is a Dell Latitude D 510. I did a fresh install to try and solve the problem…no luck.

Normal working day includes lots of stuff, various product and engineering projects, etc., but always includes 18 hours or so of watching the forum, Monday to Sunday.

Thanks for all the feedback. Unfortunately nothing worked…took it to Vodaworld data centre and they quickly gave up…they had no idea what the problem may be.

For those interested, the problem laptop is a Dell Latitude D 510. I did a fresh install to try and solve the problem…no luck.

A (very) long shot:

Did you have a Novatel installed previously?

Have a look if you can see the following files that might have been left behind:

%systemroot% (which is C:\WINDOWS on many systems). The following three files are duplicate:
NwtGatewayDLL.dll
NwtGatewayConfig.ini
Loader.dll
The version number of these old novatel files is 1.0.3.2.
Simply delete these three files in WINDOWS\system32.

RPM, you said you did a fresh install, what about a fresh system install if all else fails. If this doesn't help there's some kind of compatibility problem between the modem and laptop.

What error do you get when you do a manual dialup? ie don't start the software but go to network connections in control panel and connect on dun?

I did a fresh system install :D After I tried everything I decided to install only XP, the Latitude drivers and the card software. Sadly it did not fix the problem...

We don't have a compatibility issue listed for this combo (yet). I've asked the guys to do some more research.
