Hey all

I've started this thread to share and discuss Female Vocalists (and the accompanying music). I hope there are plenty of you out there who find a particularly beauty in some females vocalists' voices!

I'll start with an unusual case of an artist I found while listening to a Flying Lotus BBC One mix, who recorded an album in 1970 which fell on deaf ears, only to be rediscovered and re-released recently.

Linda Perhacs (http://www.last.fm/music/Linda+Perhacs)

Obscure psychedelic folk singer Linda Perhacs released her only album, “Parallelograms,” in 1970 to scant notice or sales.

It was rediscovered with new weird america and the revival of psych folk. Consequently, it was expanded and re-released in 2005.

After 25 years away from the music industry (many spent as dental technician), Perhacs is currently working on her second album. New Weird America songwriter Devendra Banhart collaborated with her in the creation of his song Freely. He is reportedly working with her on her new album.

Next up is Bjork, who probably needs no introduction. Her album Vespertine, produced with electonic musician Matmos, was never commercially popular, probably due to its ambient eclecticism.

Björk (http://www.last.fm/music/Bj%25C3%25B6rk?ac=bjork)

Vespertine (http://www.last.fm/music/Bj%C3%B6rk/Vespertine)

Vespertine, released in August 2001, is an album by the Icelandic singer/songwriter/musician Björk. It sees Björk creating an introverted, quiet world of swirling microbeats and personal lyrics. On the cover she can be seen wearing the swan dress (designed by Marjan Pejoski) that caused a stir at the 2001 Academy Awards.

Karin Elisabeth Dreijer–Andersson (born 7 April 1975 in Nacka, Sweden),[1] also known by her stage name Fever Ray, is the lead vocalist of the electronic duo The Knife, formed with her brother Olof Dreijer. Andersson was previously the vocalist and guitarist of the alternative rock band Honey Is Cool. Andersson released her debut solo album under the name Fever Ray in 2009. Her vocal style is notable for both shrill and deep tones, and also the use of multitracked vocals, with different uses of pitch-shifting technology on each track, creating an intricate, mysterious effect. Many listeners mistake the deep vocals on songs by The Knife for those of her brother. Visually, Dreijer Andersson employs the use of masks, face and body paint, intricate costumes, and other theatrical elements in photo shoots, videos and live performances, during which she often performs behind a gauze screen that partially obscures her from view.[2]

Lou Rhodes

Lou Rhodes is an English singer and songwriter from Manchester, now living in Wiltshire. In addition to providing vocals and lyrics for the band Lamb, Rhodes has released three solo albums: Beloved One, Bloom and One Good Thing. Rhodes has collaborated with 808 State, A Guy Called Gerald, Funkstörung, Pale 3, Sugizo, Plump DJs, Sheila Chandra, Eliza Carthy, Art of Noise, and The Cinematic Orchestra on Ma Fleur and the soundtrack to Les Ailes Pourpres.

Musical style

Although Lamb are famous for blending trip hop with jazz and elements of drum and bass, Rhodes's solo work is more organic and rooted in folk music. Rhodes expressed a doubt that she will ever return to electronica.[3] She combines finely tuned acoustic guitars—the essence of almost every arrangement—with violin, double bass, and rich percussion. Lyrically, her songs can be described as extremely romantic, soulful and very personal,[4] this is how Rhodes explains the last album's lyrics:[5]“ Sometimes I think, "My God, I keep writing all these love songs," and I really struggle with that. I think I'm a bit of an emotional junkie, you know? It seems to be what consumes me. The heart never ceases to provide me with subject matter. I don't know why that is. Someone asked me the other day, "Are you in love with being in love?" And I couldn't really answer that question.

Bianca "Coco" and Sierra "Rosie" Casady

CocoRosie is a musical group formed in 2003 by sisters Bianca "Coco" and Sierra "Rosie" Casady. The sisters were born and raised in the United States, but formed the band in Paris after meeting for the first time in years. Their music has been called "freak folk",[2] and incorporates elements of pop, blues, opera, electronica, and hip hop.

CocoRosie began as a duo, with Sierra singing, playing the guitar, piano and harp, and Bianca singing and manipulating various children's toys, electronic and percussion instruments, as well as other exotic noisemakers. They subsequently added various backing musicians, usually a bassist, keyboardist, and beatboxer. They have been a very active touring group, playing across Europe, the United States, and elsewhere. They have released four full-length albums: La maison de mon rêve (2004), Noah's Ark (2005), The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn (2007), and Grey Oceans (2010).

Jazzu (Juste Arlauskaite)

Jazzu (Juste Arlauskaite) started to sing jazz at age 13,after she had finished music school, piano class. As a soloist, she started to sing with big-bands and various jazz projects all around Lithuania and abroad.Juste Arlauskaite was performing at numerous jazz festivals such as 'Kaunas jazz', 'Vilnius jazz', 'Vilnius band', 'Birstonas jazz',etc. (Lithuania); 'Rainbow jazz' (Estonia), jazz festivals in Germany. Also Jazzu won grand prix at jazz competitions like : 'International jazz musician competition' and 'Sing Up' .

At age 15-16,she became a member of the group called 'Milky Lasers'. They have released two albums called 'Voyage' and 'Kitchen'(published by phazz-a-delics). At 2005 Juste met a producer Leon Somov, who she started to collaborate with. That's how she got involved into electronic music and started to create and sing this kind of music. Later on, Juste and Leonas left Lithuania and moved to London (where Juste is still studying jazz vocal).

In a year www.sutemos.net released their first EP called Leon Somov feat.Jazzu 'EP Offline'. Later 'EP Offline Remixed' showed up.Many well known producers had remixed their tracks: Joel Tammik, Sleepy Town Manufacture, Monoceros, IJO, am boy, etc..At 2008 Leon Somov and Jazzu had released their first video clip called 'Mano' (made by 'geri filmai').Leon Somov feat.Jazzu started to perform live. Two great musicians have joined them (Marijus Aleksa-drums,Domas Aleksa-bass). The team was touring in Lithuania,UK,Germany... Leon Somov and Jazzu are still working on their new upcoming projects.

At 2008 Jazzu started to collaborate with two great artists - Mario Basanov and VIDIS. At 2008 they had released track called 'I'll be gone' (the video clip also). It became the most popular hit of the year and the most-watched Lithuanian clip on youtube ever ! After the successful feat. release, team decided to record another track called 'Who's shot the silence',which was released recently. Now Jazzu is working on her solo album.

Elizabeth Fraser

Elizabeth Davidson Fraser (born 29 August 1963) is a Scottish singer best known as the vocalist for the pioneer alternative rock group Cocteau Twins. Described by critic Jason Ankeny as "an utterly unique performer whose swooping, operatic vocals relied less on any recognizable language than on the subjective sounds and textures of verbalized emotions,"[1] Fraser's distinctive singing earned much critical praise. She was once described as "the voice of God."[2] Fraser's singing veers between semi-comprehensible lyrics and abstract mouth music; fans have oft-debated the inspiration and meaning of her lyrics, but over the years Fraser has been reluctant to discuss such topics.[3] Fraser has a soprano vocal range.[4]

PJ Harvey

Polly Jean Harvey (born 9 October 1969) is an English musician, singer-songwriter, composer and occasional artist.[1] Primarily known as a vocalist and guitarist, she is also proficient with a wide range of instruments including piano, organ, bass, saxophone, harmonica, and most recently, the autoharp.[2]

Harvey began her career in 1988 when she joined local band Automatic Dlamini, whose vocalist and saxophone player, John Parish, would become her long-term collaborator.[3] In 1991, she formed an eponymous trio and subsequently began her professional career. The trio released two studio albums, Dry (1992) and Rid of Me (1993) before disbanding, after which Harvey continued as a solo artist. Since 1995, she has released a further six studio albums with collaborations from various musicians including John Parish, former bandmate Rob Ellis, Mick Harvey, and Eric Drew Feldman and has also worked extensively with record producer Flood.

Among the accolades she has received are the 2001 and 2011 Mercury Prize for Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea (2000)[4] and Let England Shake (2011)[5] respectively—the only artist to have been awarded the prize twice—eight BRIT Award nominations, six Grammy Award nominations and two further Mercury Prize nominations. Rolling Stone awarded her 1992's Best New Artist and Best Singer Songwriter and 1995's Artist of the Year, and listed Rid of Me and To Bring You My Love (1995) on its 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list.[6][7] In 2011, she was awarded for Outstanding Contribution

Yasmin Hamdan

Soapkills was an indie electro-pop band based in Lebanon. The group was formed in October 1997 when Zeid Hamdan and Yasmin Hamdan, both born in Beirut in 1976 but not related, decided to explore and combine their interest in classical Arabic song and electronic music.

Currently a cult group in Lebanon, Soapkills got inspiration both from classical Arabic song and music and from the new electro scene blossoming in the Middle East. French media have described them as "Trip hop à l'orientale" [1] The band's name was initially that of a song written by Zeid Hamdan, and according to him referred to the reconstruction of Beirut after the Lebanese Civil War: "We thought that at the time, in the context of Beirut being ... you know, reborn, and all the war being wiped clean, we thought, wow, it's shiny and it's awful and it's soap kills. We thought it would be a nice name for a band."[2] The group's sound was initially dominated by a Roland MC-303 Groovebox, which Zeid Hamdan had acquired to replace musicians after the dissolution of Lombrix, a rock band that he had founded in the mid-1990s with Yasmine Hamdan and others.[2]

The band appears on several compilations, has recorded the albums Bater (2001, for which it was joined by Rabih Mroué and Walid Sadek playing flute and trumpet[2]) and Cheftak (2002), and has performed in Paris, Berlin, Syria, Algeria, Congo, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, and Sydney. In 2005, Soapkills released their last album to date, entitled Entah Fen. The album features new material as well as remixes of their previous songs. In 2007, the band was mentioned in Time as part of "small but artistically significant rock scene" in Beirut.[3]

Yasmine Hamdan and Zeid Hamdan both started working on solo projects. Zeid went on to form a band called The New Government, while Yasmine, during a Madonna party in Paris, met with the producer Mirwais. Together, they formed the duo Y.A.S. The project places Arabic lyrics at the center of electronic beats, and the album Arabology was released in France in march 2009.

Lhasa

Lhasa de Sela (September 27, 1972 – January 1, 2010), also known by the mononym Lhasa, was an American-born singer-songwriter who was raised in Mexico and the United States, and divided her adult life between Canada and France. Her first album, La Llorona, went platinum in Canada and brought Lhasa a Félix Award and a Juno Award.

Following this success, Lhasa toured with Lilith Fair, then joined her sisters in a French circus troupe, contributing her husky voice to the musical backdrop. She lived in Marseilles and began to write more songs, then moved back to Montreal and produced a second album: The Living Road. Once again, she toured in support of her album, and she collaborated with other musicians on their projects. During this time, BBC Radio 3 honored her as the best world music artist of the Americas in 2005. She published a book about her impressions of life on the road.

Lhasa recorded a third album – Lhasa – but she was diagnosed with cancer in 2009 around the time it was released. She endured severe treatments but these did not halt the illness. She died on New Year's Day 2010.

Rebekka Karijord

Rebekka Karijord was born in 1976, in Northern Norway (Lofoten). She lived with her mother her whole growth. She moved to new places 17 times before she had her 18.th birthday. Both her parents are artists.

Rebekka went to several musical/performance educations such as the Norwegian Musical Theatre, Academy of ballet and she also went to the Royal Academy of Acting in Stockholm. She has a Swedish family and after four years living in Stockholm she feels she has two homes, one in Sweden & one in Norway.

During her Theatre education she did a musical-dramatic monologue named “Rebekkas Saga”, which contained of Bows, Percussion complemented with her music and text. This performance was performed 30 times in Oslo and in Stockholm. The performance became very successful and will be released as a drama-book in Aprii 2004 through Damm Publishing.

Rebekka composed her first song when she was 3 years old, recorded her first demo with her own songs when she was 8 years old. She also learned how to play piano and the violin during her whole growth. She started composing English songs when she was 12 years old and contributed with her talent to Children’s records and NRK (Norwegian TV) as vocalist, songwriter and actress during her whole growth.

When she was 17 years old she was contracted to a major record company, but left out as they tried to control her artistic visions. She immediately procured her own computer to start composing digitally, on her own. She loves her computer, with her own words “I would claim I have a intimate relationship with my computer”. Rebekka’s music is probably inspired by Northern Norway, more specially Lofoten, where her family lives these days. Her dream would be living in Lofoten with her computers, microphones and just keep creating these beautiful tunes.

Rebekka wanted her debut album to be like a substantial explosion, where she used a lot of different elements such as electronica, bows, vocals and violins and she definitely explored these to its apex. The result of this adventure became a playful, storylike, dramatic pop-based form, where the vocal expressions and the stories are well represented. The dialectics between the synthetic (computer) and the organic (Vocals) resulted in a powerful but still vulnerable strength that she loves.

Rebekka never intended to only sing beautifully, she wanted to project a story with her voice. She wants people to listen to the recording and understand what she went through earlier the same day. She’s fascinated by Nordic vocal-techniques, joiks in a modern wrapping. Her vision is to touch the pretension to find the real expression. She’s tired of her generations’ coward irony.

Anna Calvi

Anna Calvi is an English musician who plays in the band of the same name. On 6 December 2010, Calvi was announced as a nominee for the BBC's Sound of 2011 poll.[2] Her debut album Anna Calvi was released in the UK on 17 January 2011,[3] where it debuted at number 40 on 23 January.[4] The album was subsequently nominated for the prestigious Mercury Music Prize in 2011[5] and the BRIT Awards in 2012[6].

Musical equipment
Calvi is always seen performing with a Fender Telecaster guitar (90s US) and uses a vintage red Vox AC30 amp both live and in the studio.[58]

Guitar playing
Calvi is a virtuoso guitarist [59] - although her first instrument is the violin of which she has a university degree in. Calvi also imagines playing guitar as an orchestra [60] and is noted for her particular style of playing which involves hitting the strings in a circular motion, rather than strumming up and down.[61] The result has been described by Q as "the prodigious wash of sound that recall Ennio Morricone, Duane Eddy, even Jimi Hendrix in its fluidity."[7]

Style and influences

Calvi has been compared to other female singers PJ Harvey and Siouxsie.[62]

Calvi's style has been described as dark, romantic, atmospheric pop.[63] The singer has stated that the powers of lust are an inspiration and her performances are deliberately sexually charged.[64] Calvi has cited Nina Simone, Maria Callas, the rock of Jimi Hendrix and the Rolling Stones, the blues of Captain Beefheart, the stage performances of Nick Cave, David Bowie and Scott Walker as well as classical composers Carlo Gesualdo,[65] Messiaen, Ravel and Debussy as among her influences.[8]

Calvi has stated that the films of Gus Van Sant and Wong Kar-Wai and David Lynch have also influenced her music. She has admiration for "people that make beautiful films where the cinematography tells the story" and tries to do the same in her own work.[66]

Kirsty Hawkshaw

Kirsty Hawkshaw is the daughter of the British production music/film music composer and disco record producer Alan Hawkshaw.

At a rave event in 1991 she was noticed by producers Ian Munro, Kevin Dobbs and Nigel Walton, who at the time were known as A.S.K. It was through this meeting that they would form a dance act called Opus III. Their first single, a cover version of the song "It's a Fine Day" from their debut album Mind Fruit was an international success and Top 10 hit on UK Singles Chart,[1] and reached #1 on the US Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart in 1992. A reversed sample of Hawkshaw's singing from this track was used in the Orbital track "Halcyon," the music video for which featured Hawkshaw. Opus III also had another US #1 hit on the same chart in 1994 with "When You Made The Mountain", from their second and final album, Guru Mother.

After the group broke up in 1994, Hawkshaw pursued a solo career and since then has been in demand by other acts in the dance, house, Eurodance, trance, and electronica community, ranging from Tiësto to Delerium. In a 2009 interview, she later recalled her decision to end her association with Opus III, in which she felt that she did not want to be part of a "commercialized" act and wanted to go in a different direction, plus she was having internal problems with the band members over having more input in writing and production.[2]

In addition to dance music, Hawkshaw also recorded an ambient, ethereal album in 1999, 'Enlightenment', which remains unreleased. Her solo effort, "Fine Day", peaked at #62 in the UK Singles Chart in November 2002.[3]

On 10 October 2005, she released Meta-Message, a collection of older and newer songs, after a growing interest in her out of print album, O.U.T.. In early 2006, she appeared on the Fragma single "Radio Waves".

Hawkshaw also contributed a track titled "Telephone Song", to the children's album For the Kids Too!, released in 2004.

In 2008, Hawkshaw went on tour and released Machinima on the Loverush Digital label.[citation needed]

She runs a club in Second Life called 'Club Connected' and has built a virtual pub.

The record label, Magnatune, released her ambient album, The Ice Castle.

Eivør

Eivør Pálsdóttir (pronounced [ˈaivœɹ ˈpɔlsˌdœʰtəɹ]; born 21 July 1983 in Syðrugøta, Faroe Islands) is a Faroese singer/songwriter with a distinct voice and a wide range of interests in many kinds of music from rock, jazz, folk, pop, to European classical music. Her roots are in the Faroese ballads.

Eivør is the daughter of Sædis Eilifsdóttir and Páll Jacobsen. Usually she is only addressed by her first name Eivør, which occurs normally as the female name Eyðvør in Faroese.

At the age of 12, Eivør traveled as the soloist of a Faroese men's choir to Italy. At 13 she had her first performance on Faroese television and won a national song contest in the same year. In 1999 at the age of 15, Eivør joined the rock band Clickhaze.

On stage, she may move like an elf, sing like the queen of the night and put spells on her audience like a veritable witch. But Eivør Pálsdóttir is certainly no angel. It is still early in the evening and outside, many of the visitors to the Moers Festival are still basking in the sun, popping their first beer or enjoying a walk through the bazaar-like bustle of the bordering labyrinth of food- and cloth-stands. Inside the Festival tent, however, Eivør has already invited in the night, abducting her public straight into her burning heart of darkness. Her concert may last no longer than a bare hour. But over the course of this brief span of time, she is transforming the room into a dream machine, conjuring up a world of forbidden wishes, self-destructive desires and sweet visions of harmony and heaven.
