Hi, i've been going on about this for 2 months so i'm sure people are sick of seeing me complain, but i just wanted to make sure it's not only me. Moved to uncapped on the 1st of Feb,speeds during the day were about 20kB/s internationally, local was fine. I could live with this. Last 2 weeks of Feb speeds dropped to about 10 - 15kB/s during the day. Almost unusable as pages timed out or didn't load properly. 1st Of march arrives and for 1 week speeds during the day were at about 30 - 40kB/s, then suddenly from 6am - 10 or 11pm speeds won't go past 15kB/s again. I tried other accounts and they all went at full line speed. Someone suggested checking if my exchange is congested, but as you will agree i really don't feel like holding for telkom for an hour and finding out this isn't the case. If i leave a download going from 5am as soon as the clock hits 6am speed drops to 30kB/s then from about 7am they drop again to 15kB/s and its like this till about 10pm, every day. I can't see how this is a congested exchange issue because it's too consisent, it seems like after i've downloaded 10gb for the month i'm throttled. Their FUP says throttled to 294kb/s from 6am - 10pm, i'm getting half of this. It's 10pm now and i'm still only getting 12kB/s. Does anyone else have this problem? Thanks

If other accounts run at full line speed during the time that the Telkom one is slow then its not congestion.

This product is mean for the home user. Hence the day time throttling. If you need a product for day time usage, get a product that's mean for day time usage.

Save yourself the hassle and move to Mweb.

The Telkom uncapped products are throttled during the day (with the exception of the 4Mb package). Either deal with it, or find a proper uncapped provider.

Yes they are throttled, but it states 295kb/s from 6am - 6pm, i don't get near those speeds. And why does youtube stream at full line speed. That's the only site that goes above the 10kB/s i'm getting during the day. Does youtube use a local server?

Uncapped Internet Products Daytime Restrictions Internet Uncapped Price ADSL Line Price Combined Price
Do Uncapped 384kbps

6AM to 6PM: Up to 295kbps
6AM to 10PM: Up to 354kbps
10PM to 6AM: Up to 384kbps
No restriction on local traffic

R219 R152 R371

So this is a lie? Unless they have different uncapped 384 i'm not aware of. I knew about the throttling and was fine with it if i actually got 295kb/s. I was on Axxess just surf for 3 months and wanted to change because of the crap speeds during the day, however that account was 10x better than this, for half the price. I don't really download during the day, but i'd at least like to browse and do work without waiting ages for stuff to load.

Youtube uses local caching servers.... which would be why you'd get good speeds from it.
Ok, I see now that the throttling on 384 is different to what I had imagined.

I'm on the 1Mb/s uncapped product and am yet to be throttled during the day.

Just more telkom BS. Rules don't apply to everyone :D

The throttling only seems to kick in after i've done 10gb for the month,i'll wait and see if it's the same next month. Or should i say the throttling stated only applies before i've done 10gb, after that they tighten the noose. I'll keep a closer eye next month.

Likewise

@lilggg, I know you said it's slower than the axxess uncapped you had previously but have you actually tried testing a capped account during the day to prove it's not congestion or some other problem - 1GB from axxess is only R19.

Yes, i'm using afrihost now and it's perfect. Cybersmart as well which is fine but not as good as afrihost. I co9uld also live with it if it was fine from 6pm - 10pm, but it doesn't increase at all from about 7am - 10pm.

If the axxess Just Surf was a better product maybe MWeb or axxess Just Uncapped is the answer.

Like you I'd be interested to hear the experiences of Telkom 384 uncapped users from the other major centres - throttled or not?

Yea, even if just 1 person was getting throttled like this at least i would know for sure. Problem is i persuaded my dad to change from his 1gb package to the uncapped and i'm paying the difference. So if i use my own accounts like i was he would have changed for nothing, because he doesn't really need uncapped.

You should just upgrade your line to 1meg and get done. 384 is not internet.

I'm using about 160Gb per month with no throttling by Telkom ISP. I can only imagine that your throttling is not due Telkom ISP but that your exchange has issues. (Telkom ADSL)

Fair enough but where are you located? We're trying to ascertain where this so called "throttling" is happening as it seems only a minority of Telkom uncapped users are experiencing it judging by the responses to this thread.

There appears to be major congestion issues in the Cape Town area. See threads about congested exchanges.
