There comes a time when change is inevitable, and every so often something we do, live or experience undergoes a fundamental paradigm shift with far reaching consequences.
For me, the paradigm shift I’m currently grappling with is the “post PC era”.
Steve Jobs started it and Tim Cook likes to remind us of it at every Apple event or major product launch that comes to recent mind.
Madness I thought.
The PC cannot be superseded.
The legacy of MS DOS and Windows which Bill Gates and Microsoft created back in the 80's runs deep within my veins.
I have a custom built gaming rig which crunches out Battlefield 3 framerates like there is no tomorrow. It makes grown men cry.
A true labour of love if there ever was one.
And yet I now have an iPhone. And an iPad. (Not the new one with the Retina display editors !)
And they work. They just work.
I can use my smartphone and tablet to get through most of the working day. They are always connected. There is always an “app for that”. In business meetings, presentations and down time, I find these mobile devices satisfy probably around 80% of my daily computing needs.
The tech has advanced with such rapid pace that we are truly living in exciting times.
Microsoft see this challenge coming and appear to have a gameplan in the form of Windows 8 with the omnipresence of the Metro UX interface, perhaps representing the perfect blend of mobile-meets-desktop convergence.
But Apple will not go down without a fight. I see glimpses of convergence with OSX Mountain Lion, bringing the best of what iFans have grown to love and enamour, into their desktop OS with deep levels of integration, from the multi touch interface to the messaging and notification centres.
And the Google Android camp is always happy to deliver a sucker punch and enter the fray when least expected.
I don’t think I’ll ever give up my PC gaming, or advanced MS Excel formulas and powerpoint presentations, but for everything else, I’m happy with my mobile devices.
The Post PC era is advancing our generation and with it, those to come.
Perhaps my son will not need a PC at all, such is the momentum and acceptance the Post PC era appears to be gaining.
I’m off to read him a story on iBooks now, an animated version of Winnie the Pooh.
He turns 3 next week, and can already navigate iOS with aplomb.
Perhaps there is a message in there somewhere for all of us.
Something deep down inside me says the king is dead.
Long live the king !
So who will win the battle then, fellow forum readers.
The lines have been drawn. OSX and iOS versus Windows 8 and Android.
Keep your comments coming :)
