View Full Version : New site design & logo
Hi folks
You may have noticed that the main site has been improved and that we are sporting a brand new logo. I hope you agree that it is an improvement :D
Any feedback and suggestions will be appreciated. If you find any bugs please let us know. We have tested the site in IE, FF and Opera, but there are always some bugs that slip through…
Regards,
RPM

Houston, we haaaave a facelift!
Looks great. Still has the appeal of the previous design just a bit more mod.
I like it.
Seems that the poll results are also hidden initially at least until you have voted so as not to influence, great.

Looks good.
See that the 'favicons' for board & main site still blank (in IE7 & Opera9) ... would have thought they would have been sorted with facelift?

Hello RPM,
First thing I noticed this morning when I logged on.
Very nice. I like it. :)
I think the About (http://www.mybroadband.co.za/myadsl/contact.php) page could be worked on a bit more?
The MyADSL Logo on the Forum page should point back to the main page?
If you are posting in the forum there is no quick visible link back to the main page. I found only one link at the bottom of the forum page.
As the homepage is the most attractive page we should have more links pointing back to it? The MyADSL Logo at the top may be the best position IMO.
Good Work RPM!

I think the About (http://www.mybroadband.co.za/myadsl/contact.php) page could be worked on a bit more?Good point - though from now on I'll be referring to rpm as The General or General rpm.
I'd fix the position of the logo into the corner - without the banner ads it flies to the center and looks odd.
I'm still undecided about the new logos - we bwanas fear change :)
Otherwise - good work General - carry on. :D

Looks very nice! What would be awesome is if the forum itself had the same theme as the rest.. nice & up to date.
Hi guys
Thanks for the feedback so far.
Sneeky: Poll results are indeed hidden until someone has voted. This was one of the major changes. Also a better RSS feed (latest 15 articles)…
Bwana: Thanks for the feedback regarding the logo: fixed. I clean forgot about the banner blockers… I will definitely fix the about, speed-test etc.
BTTB: Very good point, but do you think the forum logo should point pack to the main page? I generally use the forum logo for returning to the forum index, and have a feeling other do to. I will work on something else that may be better.
Thanks a bunch for the feedback. It is really valuable!
BTW: We have some promotional MyADSL gear which will go to members. More details later…
Regards,
RPM
Its really awesome, please install another skin for the forum. Something like the main page. This light blue makes me feel sick

I am not sure?
At the moment it points back to itself, whereas the Main Page has a link clearly visible to the forum, but we need a link on the forum back to the main page. The link at the bottom is the only link to the main page at the moment. A bit obscure?
The forum page is the "index" and the main page is "nephp/?".
Suggestion: A link next to "New Posts" on the forum might be a good spot? Not sure if that is possible with the VBulletin software?
I was taking a look at the futuremark forum (http://www.futuremark.com/forum/) and their logo points back to their main page.
Maybe that forum could give you some ideas? I recall showing you that forum some time back and you thought it had potential at the time? Cannot recall your exact comment, but it was something along those lines?
I notice they have also moved over to VBulletin now and are running the same version as us.
One last comment.
I cannot say the new MyADSL Logo grabs me. :)
Hi BTTB
I have added a link to the main page in the forum, and will try to add other relevant links.
Logo: The design process was arduous, and I think Antowan and IC will agree that this was the best we could come up with. We can however change again in time…just needed something new for now. The idea is that the ‘voice box’ will be changed for separate sections…in time. I agree that it is not great…nothing like the Hellkom’s logo. But then again, how can we compete against Mad's logo :D

Hello RPM,
Of course my views will not reflect the whole forum?
The logo is fine then, but maybe the other members would care to comment?
Seems you guys spent a lot of time on it and here I am making comment. :p
You could ask Mad to come up with a nice logo? He is very good.
The circle could encompass Africa with South Africa sticking out the bottom and the quote window could appear to come from South Africa?
No need to decide on anything in a hurry?

Hi rpm - design looks great, it's just the logo I don't like :o - prehaps a shinier version of the old one? The new one just seems a bit, well, random :)
Also prehaps for first time visitors to the main page have a little information box above the latest story - this could explain what MyADSL is about etc and tell people how to get involved ... it can then leave a cookie behind and after a day the box can disapear :D

Great work.
I think the older look was a bit too minimal whereas this design is much more alluring.
As for the logo, I think both are great but wouldn't mind if the older one is discarded :)
I also think the poll should by default only show the votes once a user has voted, as it is now.
Ummm on my cell in Opera Mini the new logo shows on the myadsl.co.za site and the forums but on my computer the new logo doesn't show on the forums?? Why is that?

The only thing I don't like is the new logo. I don't want to seem presumptuous here, but I don't see how 12 letters and a circle thingey can take a lot of time to design. Maybe I'll design you one. I designed some really nice moving logos in the past :D which are now unaccessible because of a hdd circuit board crash.
For now you can use BTTB's logo.

Otherwise nice improvements!

I cannot help but feel that the new logo is badly implimented in the forums - the background cannot be white and the speech bubble should be on the left of the text.
But I still prefer the old one ... just shinyer :D
bwana
06-05-2006, 06:37 PM
Been asking myself - What does an empty speech bubble represent? Silence? Still not 'getting it'.
Have to say my allegiance is leaning towards the old one. The old one is still showing on the page in the forums.

It actually isn't still on the forums .. thats just your browser cache, but it can be seen still at myblogs.co.za
I think that we should keep the old one just lighten the colours and at a gradient background and a much lighter blue ...
I third the idea for a 'competition' of sorts, a lot of the users here are quite computer savvy and I'm sure some of us can come up with something special. Why don't we set a date for all entries to be sent in and then once we have all the possibilites we can have a vote and discuss them in the forum, sounds like fun!

Well, I'll have to go against the grain.
It's terrible.
Firstly, any brand that had been established with the logo has effectively been wiped out - the visual recognition value has been thrown out the window.
Secondly, the speech bubble means absolutely nothing, it's empty.
Thirdly, the typography in the lettering is very bad.
The M is too wide and the A is too thin, the S is too close to the D.
The white box around the logo is really poor, very amatuerish.
PLEASE, bring back the OLD logo and consider reworking that - get a happy medium, don't just rush into a big logo change without considering brand continuity !

RPM, favicons (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Favicon) not working ... or am I being a bit pedantic.
The front page looks more informative than the previous version.
1) The latest headlines can be improved however. A "more" link (and/or make category heading a hyperlink) for all the headlines in that category would be nice. A person visiting less than once a week will miss out not being able to find all the headlines for the spesific category he would be interested in because it only shows the 5 newest.
2) The headlines in latest headlines gets cut off so perhaps one should make the tooltip for each heading the full heading.
3) There is nothing wrong with the logo and the speech bubble. Don't listen to the "it's terrible" comments. The only reason I can see for using the old one is that the colour scheme in that logo fits with better with the vBulletin colour scheme.

I hate to do this to you all but rpm......
The logo sux.... its not stylish its bland and it is uninteresting.
I dont like to make the statement that will get chirped but being honest i find is the best solution.
Stick with the old logo and revamp. I have had some experience with this in the last couple of months as you know rpm but that change is to drastic and to ....... ugly
i dont like to make silly remarks but why was this not discussed and talked about?
surely the people that view the forum are the ones that are going to be seeing it the most and need to be happy with it?
Anyway if you want ideas or help let me know..... ill try my best.

I really like the main page, and think the new logo looks fine on the main page, but it does lack when its on the forums. The white backdrop to it just doesnt look very good.
I'm not shure if it needs to be changed, I think it's better than the old one, I got quite a pleasant surprise when I loaded the page today, but something needs to be changed for the forum.
Also, with the change, the forum "template" looks a bit old, isnt there a newer version of VBulletin which looks better, alot of internet forums are alot nicer than this. But thats not a major problem.
And, the new site still doesnt work on the Opera 9 beta... but thats okay i geuss, probably an error on thier side. Just hope they fix it before the final comes out.
PLEASE, bring back the OLD logo and consider reworking that

Nice! I just don't like light blue ;) I think that the light blue should be replaced with a slightly lighter version of what we used to have.
And although I like what you have done you don't think that we should move away from that glossy, bevelled look towards something more subdued - um, 'softer' if you know what I mean :)

sorry, but this new logo is awful... :(

That BTTB bevelled logo looks rather nice
I think we need to establish first if RPM and the other Mods are entertaining suggestions for a MyADSL Logo?
This (http://img396.imageshack.us/img396/6141/myadslbevelled2al.jpg) attempt was a stab in the dark as I personally was more attached to the old logo and I also now feel that bb_matt has a point about continuity, although that was not my original notion in the matter until he mentioned it.
It was more of case of the new logo just didn't grab me.
But now the more that I think about it, by changing the logo we are changing our identity known to all.
Over to you.

I definetely prefer BTTB's logo (http://img396.imageshack.us/img396/6141/myadslbevelled2al.jpg), its got a more modern feel and really looks snazzy. I think the 'white' shadowing in the blue ball under the white lines could be worked on a little bit tho... I think the current logo is a bit random, and maybe we should have a vote to see which logo should be chosen?

I feel a little embarrassed now after all your effort on the Logo and the Tee-Shirts and here we are being critical about it. :o
One doesn't think about all the hard work done behind the scenes which for all intense and purposes you need a medal for.
The new Front Page of MyADSL is fantastic and it may be a welcome change to see the forum get a new facelift as well some time?
We were looking at The Ubuntu Forums (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/) which has a nice non-default look about it.
All things in good time. ;)
Keep up the good work.
Kind Regards,

Hi BTTB
Your honest feedback is great! While it took some time develop this logo, I was under the illusion that it will be liked by everyone…big mistake :D Looks like my taste is not too representative of the MyADSL norm :) I thought we must run it past members first, but then I thought it will be a pleasant surprise to have a new design with a nice new logo. I am humbly taking my punishment for this mistake...
Regarding the forums: I am hesitant to employ too many changes as it may mean a great deal of work with some security patches. At this state we simply update, change one or two things and it works. With every additional mod it will require more work. Will definitely look into it though.

It seems to me that the main stylesheet is included in every forum page. If it was moved into an external style sheet it would save 5,277 bytes with every page load. Besides the savings it would bring to MyADSL it would also be a great relief to the forumites. An external stylesheet will also only be 5,266 bytes in size because of the removal of the comments. The same can be done with the scripts.

The same can be done with the scripts.
Any chance on that link to http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/usercp.php appearing on the main page?
Good point about the stylesheets ... also can we please not make the link to the forums open in a new window from the new main site - sometimes I go to that page to look at all the news and then want to go to the forums ... because I want it in the same window I just end up changeing the address in the address bar.

@Prometheus, while I don't have access to the vBulletin php [script] code, AFAIK the embedded stylesheet and script bloat is dynamically generated by vBulletin based on the capabilities & level of support for various features of each forum user's browser...
Might be a problem there then. But the jscript could be easier to move as you would only require a different script for every browser and then link to the right script based on which browser is being used.
Having said that, I totally agree that using linked css and js files would drastically reduce MyADSL's data transfer overheads, and since css and js files would normally be cached by a forum user's browser, it would make page rendering even faster - quite possibly fast enough to justify moving the site back into international waters where bandwidth rates are considerably less expensive than in SA...
After thinking about it for a while I was thinking that the forumites might not be very happy with that part as a lot of people now has 30GB+ local and only 2-3GB international bandwidth. A lot of them would be capped internationally and the number of visits would drop. So while it would bring a saving it would also mean less advertising revenue.

I am using FF, so it does open in a new tab ... and I could set it to open in the same tab ... but I don't want to have to do that - if I click on a link at Digg.com I want it to open in a new tab

Opera will solve that with a right click.

Yep, just a right click-->Open. I'm in love with my Opera.
Seem to think FF is worse and worse compared to it each day. But I've said enough about Opera already, and anyway it cant render my ADSL front page, so I'l keep quiet. (yes only the beat has the problem, but its better in most other ways)
I still the think thew change looks much better in general on the main site, besides the logo maby...

Middle-clicking in FF opens a link in a new tab. (It's probably way off the point...) :D

Back to the rss feed...
Could it be expanded to include a bit more info? currently it doesn't even contain the full heading. The full snippet as found on the myadsl homepage would also be appreciated.

Nice! Much better!
Would be nice if VB had a feature whereby if someone is posting to an ancient thread it pops up with a little window telling one how old the thing is
