Best and worst cellular operators in SA (http://mybroadband.co.za/news/cellular/49843-best-and-worst-cellular-operators-in-sa.html)
Vodacom, MTN, Cell C, 8ta and Virgin Mobile ranked from the best to the worst based on a recent consumer survey

It's a little like asking pigs which cut of bacon is the best, though.

seems quite shallow. also, how representative is 1000 people on 40+ million population /30+ million users

My thoughts exactly, and they didnt survey the same amount of people per provider. Rather flawed if you ask me.

These results are from a poll run on MyBB AFAIK. Not really a proper survey, so the results and conclusions are seriously flawed.
@rpm: The poll above should be withdrawn immediately. What aspect of cellular services are referred to? Voice, SMS, internet, billing, contact centre, online facilities, pricing (for what?), coverage?
Asking the question above is like asking someone: "Do you still hit your wife?" No matter what you answer, you're fckd.

Excuse me?!!:wtf: The answer should be "I never did and never will"

O come on guys. The title may be a bit misleading, but the piece is clear enough about the sampling method. 1000+ is not too bat.
Get to the network flame war already!
Its just an interesting poll its not meant to be a definitive study.
However we were asked to rate voice and sms service. What I would like to see is that extended now to charges, value for money and customer service. I think we will see those percentages fall somewhat.

I like it because it puts Vodacom at the bottom where it really belongs (Virgin mobile doesn't really count).

I think the results are valid inside each poll, i.e. the 5 bands per provider. So you could say this % of that provider is at this satisfaction level, etc.
But comparing them across the providers becomes more challenging as respondents will use different parameters, voice vs. data for example.

Hard to vote on the best.. as the least worst will view itself as good. Currently they're all a joke.

The thread title suggests it is showing the result of the poll - Vodacom, MTN, Cell C, 8ta and Virgin Mobile ranked from the best to the worst based on a recent consumer survey
It should read 8ta, CellC, MTN, Vodacom, and Virgin Mobile.

The article makes it very clear that these are the results of a poll that was run by MyBB on its members. It gives the sample size, and the results of the poll. Nothing more, nothing less. Demanding that the article be withdrawn is unnecessary. RPM asked a few questions, he got a few answers, and he reports on those answers. Simple.

A sampling size of 1000 is valid upwards of 10 million with a 5% margin of error. Statistics and all that jazz. A thousand responses for a population of 30 million users would net you a survey with a 90-95% accuracy rate.
Of course this survey is all about subjective responses, so it is not going to get you any real facts about each network.

5 – Excellent (much better than expected)
4 – Good (better than expected)
3 – Fair (exactly as expected)
2 – Bad (worse than expected)
1 – Pathetic (much worse than expected)
See, the problem is that we have very low expectations of all the cellular providers (including Cell C, especially with AKC at the helm. ex-vodacom, yuck!)
So "much better than expected" is actually not very good at all. There should be an additional level "6 - Acceptable".

May I suggest another survey: The quality of the respective providers' voicemail services. MTN's voicemail quality is horrendous, for example.

and this raises an issue of whether Mr Branson really knows that he has mobile operator in SA with the name Virgin? Or he just does not care?

Hahahaha this survey is so warped. I'm on Vodacom, Cell C and 8ta. Most of my contracts are on Voda, and only 1 business contract on 8ta, let me just say their service and billing is something i suggest everyone stay very far away from. as far as prepaid and service i suppose you can be happy with them, but once they playing double dutch with your debit orders (and not getting straight answers for 4 months) you will rate them the worst regardless of viewing Voda as the big bad wolf. They making me appreciate Vodacom's expensive and rather average service which is appalling.
