Was a little curious to find out what's happening with Durban's Broadband over Powerline's project. So went hunting. This is what i've found sofar.

This part was interesting,

Using this configuration, data is transmitted at 200 megabytes per second, which is as fast as or faster than high-speed broadband, while the voice over Internet Protocol transmission is as good as any landline telephone.

I've sent off an email to find out more about it - will report back should i hear from them.

It is interesting seeing all the municipalities diving into BPL. BPL was an unproven technology not so long ago (Well, I guess it still is, but all the tests seem to working well). I am guessing that their is some enterprising go-getter in government that is actively pushing this, judging by the speed of progress. It is people like this that get things happening

what i'm still wondering : Will this be True Broadband with International links the works or is it local Intranet of sorts?

So when it says durban... will areas outside of durbs get some love, like mount edgecombe?

Mt Edgecombe would no doubt be part of it all - i heard some time back that there is a Major Fibre network project underway there - wonder whatever happened regarding this. It had something to do with all the Development there, and some cyber center that was being built there... - Maybe i heard wrong, but would love to know more about it too.

LabAnimal : It has nothing to do with National/International. They are not becoming an ISP. They will merely provide the link (similarly as Telkom does with ADSL). Your bandwidth will depend on your ISP

There was an article about Durban Municipality and broadband in the Tribune today. Basically it said that Durban Metro has a huge Fibre network and it is using that. Mentioned nothing about powerlines?

An update. I dont know about the broadband over powerlines for Durban, but i was present to the develop, test and rollout of the fibre backbones throughtout Durban.
The fibre network encompasses from Ballito in the North down to Amanzimtoti in the South extending almost triangular to just past Hillcrest in the West (obviously no East). A redundant backbone with 40Gbps throughput with redundant fibre capable of being used to double the throughput with still space for spares in case of failure. Max throughput to a single point will be 1Gbps (imagine 1Gbps to the home!!!)
The idea was to provide long range ethernet to users once the LLU is unbundled but i am not sure where the Metro's plans stand at the moment.
Being a joint venture - Internet access will be through IS, servicing and maintaining of the physical fibre by the council, and infrastrucure (config & performance) by Didata.
They have surveyed large business in the area and were apparently waiting on enough buy in to launch commercially - though i know it is being used by the council at the moment.

Well i know of one large online gaming software house in Durban who i am sure will be able to usee this. They need tons on bandwidth....

snot, your 30GB cap will last you 7 hours....

I think it would be 4 minutes

1Gbit = 125MB/s
30 000MB/125 = 240seconds/60 = 4 minutes ??

that is theoretical.

I think it would be 4 minutes

good crap you correct  7.32GB/min :D

I had 0.06 hours which is 4 min.... me being silly again

that means you can theoretical download +-320000GB/month

IS news server is gonna cry if they get this going.... :)

320000GB/month * +- R80/per gb = R 25 600 000 per moth for your internet bill

Here is a reply i just received regarding BPL in Durban.

The city has over the past year and a bit, creating an environment in which it will be possible to use the network for general telephone and internet purposes. We still have much to do, but hope to have the relevant vehicles in place by the end of this year, to start providing cheaper telco services. the project will however need to be rolled out over a period of time. It is likely that access to residential properties though will be consider only in a year and a half's time. The reason for this is simply practical and financial. If we want to meet the objective of bringing cheaper internet to the average home then we need to develop a cash flow etc, which means that access to businesses will be the first business opportunity.

hope this helps

There we have it. - still gonna be a wile - if this is the route Durban is taking, i guess Tswane & Jhb will go the same route.
