Ethopia has now made VoIP a criminal offence, in order to protect their phone monopoly.

Use of VoIP hardware and software has just been made a crime by the new Ethiopian Telecom Service legislation, which was ratified on 24 May. Anyone violating this provision could be sentenced to up 15 years in prison.

The authorities say the ban was needed on national security grounds and because VoIP posed a threat to the state’s monopoly of telephone communications.

The new law also gives the ministry of communications and information technology the power to supervise and issue licences to all privately-owned companies that import equipment used for the communication of information.

Lol another step forward for Africa. For those that don't remember, it used to be illegal here as well. They found it impossible to police and just gave up.

I wish everyone would start rolling out unlimited calling plans already , we all know that this is where telecoms are headed.

We are very likely to have the same laws in place at some point in time.

We have this thing called the "Constitution" which protects us against laws like this.

We did. Did not work out that well. Some cell companies still have an exorbitant 'voip data' rate hidden in their T&C's although it was never enforced.
