It's actually awesome to see how the Bond character has evolved over the years. LOL the one where the guy says to Bond "in Japan men always come first" and Bond says "I might just retire here" was classic.
Then in Austin Powers he added his own extra line :p

I meant purchase it from overseas. LOL. Can't remember buying a DVD from a local store in AGES!!!! The crap quality that Ster-Kinekor and NuMetro push out is ridiculous.
I get the majority of my DVDs for $12 overseas, that's including shipping. Original, non-asian copies, non-bootleg DVDs, so the real thing. So to me R84 is not bad. Plus I don't get charged customs cause the price is so low.
I gave up on the local DVD industry a LONG TIME AGO.

Indeed , R84 is a reasonable price to pay for a DVD IMO. However, I would still like to see it closer to the R50 mark, locally I mean - not that this will ever happen anytime soon.
If you look around, though, Musica do often have offers of various fairly new DVDs for like 100 bucks which is not too bad...Getting it off the net for free is clearly better though, if not entirely legal ;)

DVDs are a ripoff even at r99. If they lowered the prices and released them in a more expeditious manner they have a chance against piracy.

Agreed, it is not legal, but neither should ripping off the public be ;) It must cost less than a Rand to produce a DVD considering returns to scale in bulk production , even considering all costs and paying the film studios and whatnot, yet we see no reflection of this in pricing. This is why pircay is prevailing.
I don't understand why companies fail to understand that selling 1000 DVDs at R50 will get them more than selling like 400 at R100. Simple econmics.
Unitl then, go piracy!

Yah so i saw this movie Just Friends (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0433400/) its cool.
Anyone watched Children of Men?
Saw it last night, and it's easily the best movie I've seen this year. The movie would be great purely for the 2 steadycam tracking shots (you'll know the 2 I'm talking about if you've seen the film), but when you add in a gripping and plausible story, solid acting and great direction you have a real winner. This movie is excellent. Highly recommended

Also thought it was an excellent movie ... walked out expecting to be shot at though :D, loved Clive Owen (good acting). First took notice of him in Closer.
Camera techniques were interesting and new but made me queezy at times but I guess that was the idea. It was a nice surprise, I was expecting a B-grade Sci-Fi movie (not that I don't have a great appetite for B-grade Sci-Fi :D) but instead I got a well made movie and not quite the Sci-Fi I was imagining.
The Departed is the movie of the year.
I must say, I'm very excited to see The Departed.

re the Departed - its based on two awesome Hong Kong cop movies (there are actually three in the series but 3's a bit lame. As far as I know, Scorcese just used the first two to make Departed) - if you can find them, you should watch them. Titles are 'Infernal Affairs' & 'Infernal Affairs 2'.
Some vidshops in Joburg do have them..way better than the fairly lame boring remake that Scorcese has done.

All the Bond flicks are a joke, if you really think they're good you must be deluding yourself. Although, I remember Goldfinger was kinda good. But yeah, they're mostly trash... Although, right now I wouldn't mind watching one... Strange.
I think I like the Bond movies because they are trash ... very easy on the brain :D.
I'm a bit nervous about the new blond 007. I know it's been debated to death overseas but that pouty look he has in all the posters looks a bit corny to me, a bit over done. Would like to hear if he is cool in the movie because Bond has to be cool or the whole thing flops .
Agree ... Connery is the best IMO. George Lazenby the worst.

They should make a james bond movie with shaun connery in it. Like they have to go back to the old bond to like fight the new enemy old school or something
I think the problem with new Bond movies is that there is no good universal 'enemy' now that the KGB are out of the loop. Those paranoid Cold War days made for a few good Bond films.

All Bond flicks except the Sean Connery ones and GoldenEye. I didn't enjoy the others at all either.
I think the problem with new Bond movies is that there is no good universal 'enemy' now that the KGB are out of the loop. I guess we could pick on North Korea a bit but it's just no fun beating up the global nerd who has failed to move with the times
He should take on Islamic fundamentalists:eek: . They fit the bill.
Of course that would not be very PC now would it. :o

I don't really see the Arabs as dangerous (perhaps it's their garb) unless they threaten to cut off our oil supply, but that's not very James Bond :D

Arab doesn't = Islamic fundamentalist
Bond would lose his "licence" if he made that mistake.

being sick at the moment with a cold, means I'm shovelling in movies bigtime..
watched 'The Fountain' - odd sort of sci-fi flick, interesting but not awesome.
Also saw 'Marie Antoinette' - which again was interesting, but needed to be shortened by like 20 minutes.. ditto Casino Royale - which seriously needed to be shortened - and sorry, a card game just isnt that exciting.. not too sure about the new Bond, given that his boss is clearly a much more charismatic actor (judy dench) - weird having a nonentity-looking Bond, like George Lazenby was, way back..
winner for me yesterday, was a dumb Korean film called The Host - which dealt, unexpectedly, with a big giant mutant lizard-fish thing, terrorizing locals beside a river. Absolute rubbish, but after the trudge of Marie Antoinette (which had great music tho) - mutant fish-lizard things were a happy welcome relief.
On the agenda today to watch are: brit film 'Chromophobia', another new one 'running with scissors' 'the motel' and a couple of old Kurosawa's, if I have the energy (throne of blood & Ikiru)

Went to see David Lynch's 'INLAND EMPIRE' last night.
wrote this letter to a local paper here in Boston, we'll see if they print it :)
--------
An Open Letter to David Lynch, from a fan.
Dear David.
I went to see 'INLAND EMPIRE' last night. Usually a three hour film has a three hour storyline, whereas yours had maybe 20 minutes of story in total. What on earth were you thinking?
Yes its shot on digital video. So what? You've forgotten 'content' and decided to cash in your awesome cinema pedigree with a bizarre focus only on 'Form' ? You've made a truly bad derivative student art movie. Lots of (and I mean LOTS) of shots of Laura Dern walking down corridors with a worried/scared/horrified look on her face, and endless supposedly 'meaningful' conversations, do not make tension, interest or even a decent cinematic narrative.
I 'get' that supposedly the central reality is that its 'the thoughts of a woman in trouble' - in this case some Polish hooker. And yes, there's that arbitrary side plot of two people filming a Hollywood movie, and the ones' husband is jealous, and maybe there's a murder. And yes, the time duality thing is interesting. I don't need a 'linear' storytelling form in order to appreciate quality cinema - however, I DO need something more than what smells like a burned out artists' laundry list, disguised as a deep artistic creation.
People began leaving the cinema eventually, as the hours trudged by, and endless scenes signifying nothing, kept appearing, which just kept completely defusing any dramatic tension you might have established initially. (Unless you meant to establish boredom by hours of 'meaningful' and 'portentous' dialogue).
David - I don't know if you've been surrounded by too many people who have been telling you that your every idle thought and foible is of great value, and thus causing you to lose what every artist needs - namely - a good objective perspective on your own creative output, but because I love you and your previous work, I'm taking the time to succintly and sadly fulfil this critical function that seems to have failed you when you perhaps needed it the most.
Listen to me David, I'm not willing to delude myself and try to pretend that what I saw was somehow meaningful or even 'good'. I don't care that you are boring your audience, I do care that you are deluding yourself perhaps, into having made a badly conceived piece of work, and are lowering artistic standards by attempting to make your audience have to pretend to themselves that their justified boredom was somehow 'good' or 'not there'.
You are better than what you have created here.
'INLAND EMPIRE' is the Emperor Who Is Wearing No Clothes. It is a three hour trudging and tedious art-student's digital video masturbatory exercise, with mixed in moments from the much more coherent short film(s) 'Rabbits'.
The public should be warned - its NOT 'Wild At Heart' or 'Eraserhead' or 'Blue Velvet' or 'Mulholland Drive' - each of which were truly great stories and even better Cinema. I would suggest that the public should not be fooled by any PR, or any prior goodwill that they justifiably have towards David Lynch, given his cinematic pedigree.
'INLAND EMPIRE' is 'disturbing' - not because of its unique vision or storyline or narrative style - but because its so incredibly badly made, so utterly pretentious, narratively boring and incoherent, visually plodding, banal and badly edited, by a director who used to be so damn good.
Withdraw this mess from cinema's and edit it down by at least a third, and tighten up your editing while you're at it. I was embaressed for you, David.
with love

Since Mulholland Drive was so brilliant!! I've watched MD about 13 times. Just a superb piece of cinema.
Oh well...at least we have Twin Peaks Season 2 coming out on DVD on 10 April 2007. YAY!!

re INLAND EMPIRE - as ever with movies, dont take someone elses word for it, especially when its in the art field - and especially if you're a Lynch fan - go take a look, and see for yourself.
BUT - dont be afraid you'll miss something good, if you decide that its crap and should be walked out of..
Thats what kept me, and a lot of people sitting there and watching the whole damn three hours - everyone figuring that its somehow bound to get better in some way.. but it didnt.. And afterwards, people trying to persuade themselves that they werent actually bored and tired..
So go see it as a Lynch fan, but be fully warned that if/when boredom sinks in, it pretty much doesnt get better.. the flick is so far from the awesome things like Mulholland Drive and Blue Velvet, its like chalk and cheese..

That's what I liked about him.
As well. One of Daniel Craig's good points as Bond is that he has no recognisable remorse, as far as duty goes. He's not stylish, just brutally efficient.
Casino Royale - one word - boring :)
Never! :) It isn't the most 'Bond' film out there, but it is a good action film.
Yeah, the whole thing was a lot more 'hardcore' than previous Bonds...Like making a point of the fact that Bond actually KILLS people- a saint he is not...I liked that aspect as well really.
This is what I don't like... the 'hard edged' reinterpretation. Sigh. One other thing that was good was the minimal use of gadgets. No invisible cars, etc. Fantastic :)

I'd recommend people check it out for sure!
If you are a true Bond fan, and liked the classics, then its definitely one for you!
The wife and I both really liked Casino Royale. The previous Bond pushed things too far with that "cloaked" car. Leave the Star Trek stuff to Star Trek.
Saw Deja Vu a few days ago. It was a pretty decent action thriller, some sci-fi in there as well as a little romance too. imdb gives it a good rating too.

http://imdb.com/title/tt0450259/
Set against the backdrop of civil war and chaos in 1990's Sierra Leone, Blood Diamond is the story of Danny Archer (Leonardo DiCaprio) - a South African mercenary - and Solomon Vandy (Djimon Hounsou) - a Mende fisherman. Both men are African, but their histories as different as any can be, until their fates become joined in a common quest to recover a rare pink diamond that can transform their lives. While in prison for smuggling, Archer learns that Solomon - who was taken from his family and forced to work in the diamond fields - has found and hidden the extraordinary rough stone. With the help of Maddy Bowen (Jennifer Connelly), an American journalist whose idealism is tempered by a deepening connection with Archer, the two men embark on a trek through rebel territory, a journey that could save Solomon's family and give Archer the second chance he thought he would never have.

Nope. Do yourself a favour and hunt down the ORIGINAL version of 'Assault on Precinct 13' -
its a little dated but still cool - the director (John Carpenter) deliberately used a little girl
known for her Disney movie roles, and all I can say is, there's a glorious moment where
'the little girl doesn't survive' :)

original version is just this quietly creepy film, nothing major, no big budget.. but if you're a film geek its worth looking at.. it has a nice mood, and very little explanation for much of what happens.. early John Carpenter, the awesome director of The Thing, Halloween, The Fog (original) Escape From New York and a few other goodies..

Watched Blood diamond instead. Wow, I thought it was excellent. Despite Leo's accent coming and going.
Nice to see so many SA actors in it( like The Mummy :)) and some nice shot of Cape Town as well.

Just saw:
IKINAI (Suicide Bus Tour) - weird but very cool story about a bunch of guys who sign up for a mass suicide using a bus..
JAPAN SINKS - big budget disaster movie, reasonably fun, some nice tidal waves :)
THE STREET FIGHTER - my first Sonny Chiba flick. Obviously tacky but damn, very mean kung fu..
THE SAMURAI TRILOGY (Criterion release) awesome three film collection about the making of a samurai, pretty good.
THE FOX FAMILY - weird and somewhat gory cool Korean musical, about a family of foxes who become humans..
SCARED STRAIGHT - documentary about program to shove stupid juvenile delinquent kids in with hardcore convicts who scare the crap out of them and show the kids what prison life is really like..(thus 'scaring them straight')

Watched "Stranger than Fiction" last night.
Very weird movie, and the ending is all to wishy washy....

Its not exactly one of those deep, "change your life" movies but its a good, entertaining movie, wouldn't mind watching it again actually.

This is true. But there are certainly enough twists and turns to keep you involved.

going to watch rocky tonight- anyone seen it yet?

Well i am back. :p Rocky was not bad. Better than I had thought it would be. Don;t go into it expecting a lot of boxing like in the others, because there really isn't much, but it was a decent flick.
Please, no more after this one though!

Watched Dreamgirls last night. As we went in there was a sign saying "Warining - this movie is extremely loud" which we found a bit puzzling, but man was it right!
This movie is basically a 2 hour long music video and my goodness, is it ever loud! It was almost like being at a concert rather than a movie.
It certainly wont be everyone's cup of tea. Four older-looking people walked out after about 15 or 20 minutes.
There is a LOT of singing. Most of it is the girls performing on stage at some or other venue during their career, but at some points the characters just breakout into song, a la The Lion King, which really spoilt it for me. There really is very little spoken dialog in this piece to speak of.
I thought the acting was not bad, but most of it was singing so I don't know if that is the same thing....
Interested to see what other people thought of it.
For now, be warned- it is loud and long and full of song! :p :)
Watched the Departed and Gridiron Gang last night
Had high hopes for Departed, Gridiron gang stars The Rock... nuff said.
Turns out that gridiron gang beat it hands down. Much better movie imho.

Apocolypto is a excellent movie directed by Mel Gibson.
The Passion of the Christ was also directed by Mel Gibson. Seems like he is a excellent director.

Just finished watching a movie called The Last Time, with Michael Keaton in it, damn good, and also saw Unknown, with James Cavaziel.. kind of like Saw, a whole bunch of guys are locked in a warehouse, except they've all been knocked out by some gas, so they can't remember who they are, and whether they are the bad guys or the good guys!

Why so? I thought the setting was excellently done, the acting good, the use of language really well done, and John Debney's score excellent. A lot of blood though...

It really wasn't for me. 30 mins of someone getting whipped is unnecessary.

re Letters from Iwo Jima - havent seen it yet - been waiting for someone to come up with English subtitles online :P
(hopefully its being explained in SA marketing, that its the companion film to 'Flags of Our Fathers' - the US view of the Iwo Jima battle, whereas 'Letters' is the Japanese viewpoint..
re Prestige, hit fast forward on it eventually..
ditto 'Night at the Museum' - cute fx and sorta fun, but nothing to keep one focused on.
finally watched 'An Evening with Kevin Smith' (all 4 hours of it) AWESOME. Anyone interested in movies, or who liked Clerks, or any of the Jay and Silent Bob things - you have to see this, he's an incredibly funny speaker..
watched old b&w creepy flick 'eyes without a face' - kind've fun.
rewatched 'Bully - very cool larry clark flick (guy who did 'Kids')
watched 'Destricted' - collection of short erotica/porn films by different established directors.. kinda fun in parts.. (the 'Balkan Love Film' is awesomely funny)
watched 'American Movie' - documentary on hopelessly untalented would be film maker. Bit of a trudge, not fun really.
watched 'The US vs John Lennon' - documentary - rather boring unfortunately.
'Seducing Mr Perfect' - not great Korean comedy love story.
'Nina's Heavenly Delights' - odd UK lesbian thing - not great, but bizarre to watch a film about Indian families, set in Glasgow, and they all sound totally Scottish :)
