Watched The Day The Earth Stood Still last night. What a disappointment :(
Giant plotholes, even once you choose to accept the film's actual premise. Keanu Reeves playing himself or Neo again.
Will Smith's kid was irritating as hell.
And have I mentioned the plotholes?! :(
Must agree, not worth it to watch this movie on the big screen - rather wait till it comes on SABC 1.

I was really hoping for something special as well, the way it had been hyped up. I can't remember a disaster movie I have enjoyed (except Cloverfield) since sometime in the 90s...:(

Went and watched Rock 'n Rolla last night. Bloody brilliant movie.
The fact that there was just 3 women in the audience says it all...and just 1 woman in the entire cast adds more emphasis to that.
If you liked Lock, Stock and two smoking barrels and Snatch you'll love this one too.
Guy Ritchie should have gotten divorced earlier :D

Hmmm, maybe I should give that one another try then. I watched the 1st half an hour and was pretty bored. It was like it was trying so hard to be Snatch and Lock Stock and failing...

Yeah, the beginning is a bit tedious and formulaic Guy Ritchie stuff but once it gets going it's pretty funny and clever. There are some parts that catch you off guard when you least expect it.
Just feel the ending was over-edited just to make it a sub-2hour flick. There are some plot lines left up in the air or conveniently killed off...but I won't give that away. He has also given in to the Hollywood obsession with sequels and makes no pretense about Part 2 at the end of the flick.
Anyone here watched Forgetting Sarah Marshall?
Yup, I rented it on DVD. (Because I just LOVE the "How I Met Your Mother" series and all its characters, so I figured: Why not?)
It was quite insane yet lovable - it kinda had the shock factor of There's Something About Mary, didn't it?

Balls Out wasn't that funny..
I watched DVD Step Brothers and laughed my a$$ off.
Watched Rescue Dawn. Average movie but the performance by Steve Zahn (of all people) was haunting. Never realized he was such a good actor. Jeremy Davies looked like a concentration camp survivor. I've never seen an actor so thin in a movie before  looked like he'd drop dead any minute.
Watched 7 pounds and Role Models and Slumdog Millionaire!

Spot on! It's about the furtherest thing from a Bond movie... but, if you view it as more of an 'epilogue' to Casino Royale then it's not that bad.

Agreed, I had no idea who was supposed to be the main character in the film, Mc G should never be allowed to direct a film again , somebody should tell him that the shakey camera effect only works in the Bourne series . They talk and fight. Last time I checked - my car and toaster and the tanks around the military base didn't take on human form and start talking/fighting. I can suspendmy disbelief for that. It's a Transformers movie - it needed that little bit of humour (no matter how crude) to lighten up the atmosphere before the mega fights broke out.
Anyway, consider this dude... Megan Fox is that hot that even machines would want to boink her. It would have been unrealistic if none of them tried! Nuff Sed.

I like seeing how what the powers would look like in real life (so to speak)... I have to disagree... as an avid fan of the comics, I can tell you the first 2 were spot on. Making the leap from X-Men:TAS to the movies would have been weird (considering I was weirded out that Rogue didn't have powers, or that Gambit wasn't there at first)... but looking at the movie from a broader perspective... 1. Plot was decent. What were you expecting... Shakespeare?
Plot? No, there was no plot. What you're euphemistically calling a "plot" was merely the events the "scriptwriters" put in to connect the transformer fight scenes.
2. Que? It's not a movie where immense emotions are expressed. There's firefights and running and a few silly sequences to break it all up. LeBouef was good, his dad was good, Megan Fox was sexy (have you seen her in other movies... I'm mean she's eye-candy dude FFS). The Green Mile this is not.
Firefights, and running...and running...and running...and running... (Sorry, got distracted there).
Acting...yeah. How is it that directors like James Cameron, Ridley Scott or John McTiernen can have movies that are considered action classics - Die Hard, Aliens, Gladiator, Terminator & T2, Predator - yet have top-notch acting.
Fact is, Michael Bay can only direct explosions competently.
3. Didn't have a problem picking it up despite watching the original way way back. For everything else, there is suspension of disbelief.
I'm sorry, but there were serious continuity issues, ones that should not have been in any competently directed movie. Basically, lazy directing, or no eye for detail. I was going to say that moviegoers aren't that stupid, but it's apparent that they really are.
4. It's a movie about giant robots that transform into liddle iddy-biddy cars. Need I say more.
So? Why treat the audience like idiots? Look at Terminator and Terminator 2 - classic action movies about robots that want to kill people, and James Cameron managed to get it right.
5. You're blind.
Here you go - the action sequences in this are just as competent:

Yeah, the humping robot. And the college girl transformer. And the Racist Twins. And the Devastator balls. And the household appliances (that might have been funny if it hadn't already been done to death in the Gremlins movies). The pot brownies. ~*"Robot Heaven"*~. The humping dogs. The "romantic moments" between Sam and Mikaela. And a whole bunch more that I'm hoping I've scrubbed from my memory.
Frankly, in a decade where we have had superhero movies like X-Men, X-Men 2, Spiderman and Spiderman 2, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight , and Iron Man, there's no excuse for expensive dreck like Transformers 2. I think it's telling that one of the explosions in the movie took longer to set up than it took to film the entire movie.

1. It's what makes it popcorn frenzy goodness lad.
2. Now you bringing out the big guns. First off... Die Hard had about as much acting as sieve has water. Terminator and T2 are classics. Few movies have that type of depth. I mean if you were really expecting deep plot/wow acting in a movie based on a cartoon that itself was based on a toy range... erm... yeah...
3. What continuity issues? I'm sorry, but I go to these movies to see big explosions and giant robots fighting. I really don't pay much attention to detail in movies like this. I can barely remember a thing apart Fox sitting on that bike in hot-pants and Megatron's samurai skills in the forest. That's the stuff I pay to see. The rest is just filler.
4. Different movies there chum. Terminator was Cameron's baby. He made it with a point. Transformers are toy that got made into a cartoon that got made into a movie. If you want meaning in everything you watch... I feel for you.
5. I had to go to the loo when that college girl transformer... er... transformed. I got back and didn't really care because they were being chased and there was going to be GIANT ROBOT FIGHT SCENES.
The twins were irritating, but I find all characters like that irritating. Expect in Don't be a Menace. That was classic.
6. The Dark Knight was brilliant, but seriously... it was not a masterpiece. It wouldn't make my Top 20, nevermind my Top 10. Face it - it's a comic-book movie. Also, comparing Transformers (need I remind you what it had as a base) to X-men, Spiderman (45 odd years of story lines to choose from, both corny and excellent) and Batman (even longer time and even more stories) is like comparing coal and diamonds.

Don't "lad" me, sonny boy.
2. Now you bringing out the big guns. First off... Die Hard had about as much acting as sieve has water.
What!? Did you actually see it? Alan Rickman's performance is considered one of the classic villain performances, and even the supporting cast did very well. Look at the ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, ratings by real movie critics - Die Hard is up at 94%, and Transformers 2 is at 28%. Says a lot, huh?
I mean if you were really expecting deep plot/wow acting in a movie based on a cartoon that itself was based on a toy range... erm... yeah...
So compare it to a movie based on a friggin' Disney theme park ride, like Pirates of the Caribbean; Pirates was in a bloody different league. (We'll not talk about the sequels, OK?)
Doesn't matter what the source material is, a competent director can make a good movie of it. Even Michael Bay somehow managed an OK job of Transformers.
3. What continuity issues?

That basically says it all - you're happy to accept mediocrity because of Megan Fox's hot pants.
4. Different movies there chum. Terminator was Cameron's baby. He made it with a point. Transformers are toy that got made into a cartoon that got made into a movie. If you want meaning in everything you watch... I feel for you.

Jar-Jar Binks syndrome.

Just saw it with a bunch of my buddies and were laughing hysterically. That said definately do not bring any young children, as it is extremely offensive and actually could/should be considered Adults only.
Also if you are homophobic, this movie is probably not for you and/or gay who is offended easily. Personally, there is more male nudity than was expected/needed. But if you look past that, the movie is hilarious. Not sure if any of you enjoyed Sasha's work in Borat &/ or Da Ali G Show, but personally I think he is a pretty funny comedian, and this quite humorous.
According to some user reviews on www.rottentomatoes.com it's more like a gay porn movie than anything else, ppl walked out after 15 min.

What I cant understand is why people go watch it knowing it's a Sascha Baron Cohen movie so chances are it will be offensive and then still walk out! Really annoys me. Anyways, no one walked out in our cinema. :)

And a user review:
WARNING: This is nothing like "Borat," which was inventive -- it is essentially gay porn, with full frontal male nudity, graphic gay sex re-enactments, anus shots, dildos, baby-in-peril scenes, S+M bondage scenes, etc. Very few jokes, and no story at all. Just as "Freddy Got Fingered" tanked Tom Greene's film career (thankfully), this is a gigantic setback for Sasha Baron Cohen. This film is awful, embarrassing, repulsive, and not at all what is suggested by the trailer. I am astonished that the Rotten Tomatoes community has not torpedoed this garbage. After 90 miserable minutes, there was a line at the AMC Guest Services counter with people asking for their money back. Even teenage boys -- who seem to like everything -- left shaking their heads and saying, "That sucked." How this film got past the MPAA without an NC-17 rating is mind-boggling. If you see this film, you will hate yourself, and if you think this is clever, well, I weep for you.
Lol, I think I'll skip this one and watch Transformers 2 instead. At least that's got T1ts&A$$.

Saw Bruno last night and personally I thought it was hilarious! I'm very open-minded, so it didn't really offend me at all. What I cant understand is why people go watch it knowing it's a Sascha Baron Cohen movie so chances are it will be offensive and then still walk out! Really annoys me. Anyways, no one walked out in our cinema. :)
Although Borat had a lot of staged pieces I think 95% were staged in Bruno
SPOILER!!!!!
The "hunting trip" was staged totally.
The talk show I would say was half staged as most probably the audience were invited to a "new" talk host... and did not really know what to expect.
Did anyone notice how many faces were blocked out. That means those people refused to sign the disclaimer.
But yes very weak.. and more then likely the last that will be made. It still grossed more than $30m over the first week

I watched Transformers 2 on Sunday. I think the movie was great and the CGI was awesome. One thing I didnt like though was the fight scenes between the robots happened very quickly and was sometimes hard to follow. Other than that, will definitely buy the DVD.
Plus Megan Fox is hot :D

Well Its all implied not seen at all. As they say "its all done with mirrors". One average size penis is seen in the whole movie and although it was brised, I doubt it was mr Cohen's.
BTW I am not recommending the movie at all its a weak sequel to BORAT. I would give it a miss. See my previous posts on it

My wife saw it today (while I watched Ice Age 3), and she says: "If you like logic, plausibility and intelligent characterisation, you're out of luck. But if you like heavy-handed religious symbolism or a good music score, you should definitely see it."
Completely wrong. The musical score was crap. The religious symbolism wasn't there either. It was straight up in yo' face - no symbolism at all. You'd need to be an illiterate jungle-boy from India to not get what "they" were trying to say... I mean seriously.
Nic Cage was still good. I mean it's his type of role, pity the movie sucked absolute balls though...

PLOT ?
the last movie I watched with a "PLOT" was The Usual Suspect, that was many years ago. When I go to the cinema to watch a Michael Bay movie plot is not on my mind. Non stop action, cutting edge CGI, skantly dressed barely legal woman doing nothing else but being eye candy. That is worth the price of the entrance ticket. Btw it did cost o ly R10.50 at a Ster Kinekor Junction :p
so go and sit back switch of the cerebal cortex and induldge in the violence sounds super graphics and Seeing Megan Fox draped over a motor cycle looking good enough to eat :p

Hey, I just relayed what my wife said. She's a serious movie buff though, and talks with knowledge of movies I've never heard of. And she sure as hell knows her movie scores - she has well over a thousand, ranging from the classics, like Elmer Bernstein, to the well-knowns, like Jerry Goldsmith and John Williams, to the best of the best, like Basil Poledouris, up to the new more contemporary ones, like Marco Beltrami and Michael Giacchino. I'll take her opinion over that of someone who liked Transformers 2. :)

Meh - different strokes. I base my opinion on how the music influences me during the movie and it didn't help much. I mean no type of music can make an awful movie good, but it does lessen the dullness. This didn't ;)

Has anyone seen Crossing Over? It's the movie that 2004's Crash was supposed to be. It's more about illegal immigrants than racism, but definitely carries similarities. Read my full review here: http://fridaynightfilms.iblog.co.za
I have not seen your website before and read any of your reviews. I saw “crossing over” and was amazed at how many bad reviews it got, a mere 12% rating on rotten tomatoes. What I could not understand was how many reviewers said that the scenes were contrived. As if movies scenes are not contrived. I liked the loose threads as shown in Babel and Crash. BTW did you see the TV series “crash”? I thought it was really good both this movie as well as the tv series.

Well, surely the movie should be influencing you, not the music? The music can add atmosphere though.
But, that said - you can can have good movies with bad music (I'm racking my brains to think of good examples though - Star Trek IV, maybe?), and bad movies with brilliant music (e.g. Conan the Barbarian, Krull, Farewell to the King).

Yeah, sometimes critics are so far up their own arse that they forget about actually enjoying a movie and instead spend their time looking for flaws. I liked Crash, it was good, but didn't like that it won best Oscar, it didn't deserve that award.
I also think that Crossing Over is less pretentious than Crash, not as many 'in your face' and 'over the top' situations.
Watched Ghosts of Girlfriends Past last night (the new Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner film). As a film, it gets a 0 for originality and effort, but that's not why you watch this kind of film. Entertainment value? 4 out of 5. I had a good laugh at this one.

I cannot go to a cinema.
1. I hate being butt raped for cold stale popcorn and coldrink.
2. I will end up killing some **** because of talking, cellphones and general bad manners.

What I mean is - that with the poor selection of movies I have at my disposal - would it be worth watching the film again? For me - comedies are different depending on the people you watch it with. Last time I watched it with my sister in my office on a 15" laptop screen (no speakers, sound was terrible.... laptop speakers are ugly things). Now (it's finally on the big screen... whoopie) I can watch it with other people on a large screen with good sound and popcorn to boot (once I am finished with the other two movies I wanna watch - which will be on for another 2 weeks at least... same as Fired Up). I was just throwing the question out there because I was bored and wanted to increase my post count. So MEH!
