Hi, our USB Adaptor works with both normal telephone and Dect Cordless phone. Can make and receive both Skype phone calls and normal PSTN phone calls, costs only 1/3 of the Dual phone. Quality product can be cost efficient as well.
They are available for sell at www.digitalplanet.co.za and www.bidorbuy.co.za
The latest dialer for Skype is available for download at www.skypenow.net/SkypeMate 2.0.exe

It's called ATA(Analog Telephony Adapter).
But no PC is needed to make a VoIP call as long as you have broadband connection, it will be used with your ADSL/broadband Router. Most of them are SIP standard, you need a VoIP service provider like VoipBuster to make VoIP call. Very few support IAX protocol. usually this device doesn't support Skype.
popular one: Sipura SPA-3000
Grandstream HandyTone-4xx series
Linksys PAP2

http://www.skypenow.net/USB Adaptor User Manual for Skype.pdfI recently bought one of these gizmos and I have 2 Q's
1. When will a Linux version of the SkypeMate software be available to work with the Linux version of Skype or is there a way of getting this gizmo to work with Skype in Linux without additional software?
2. Using Windows and Skype Out, is it possible to send a fax through this gizmo (assuming that latency is good)?

No answer for 1 as for 2 I don't think so as fax protocols tend to be very time critical in operation and you're putting it through a compressed connection.

I could always be wrong here though.

(1) The Linux version of the SkypeMate is available to download under
http://www.skypenow.net/Linux-SkypeMate.zip
It support Skype for Linux 1.2.0.18 version, RPM for Fedora Core 3.
(2)The hardware supports Fax, if the Skypeout support Fax, it should work.
(3) Beside Skype, it also supports VoipBuster, the Dialer is available to download under
http://www.skypenow.net/VoipBusterMate.exe
Besides the Free PC to PC and Free PC to Landline phone calls to over 20 countries around world. VoipBuster costs Euro 3cents to call SA Landline, It's worthwile to replace your outgoing domestic phone call to SA landline through VoipBuster.

I've got a Linksys (Sipura) SPA-3000. It's great. It can handle incoming and outgoing calls from the PSTN and VOIP. It doesn't handle Skype itself though.

Yip an ATA works really well. M-Web sent me the SPA-1001 for free (part of their promotion of their Broadband Talk service) a few weeks ago. It's really nice to be able to use a normal phone without hassling with stuff on the PC. Now my whole family can use it just as they use the normal phone. By using it we're now saving quite a bit of money on calls to cellphones & long distance (>50km) calls during peak time, not to mention international calls! :)

Feels good 2 rather be paying someone else other than Telkom for calls, and for cheaper!

ATA?

note to self: investigate whether VoIPBuster has s/w for Linux [Gentoo] and will work on my AMD64, seriously considering one of them i-Mates that has wifi...

VoIPBuster is a service. It will work with any sip based soft or hardware phone. My nix is nonexistant but a quick google reveals many options. These voip providers confuse the issue when they bundle their own softphone as most people assume the service will only work with their software.

Slightly o/t, I've been making a number of SkypeOut calls the last few days to the UK, Canada, and SA landlines, all using my ISDSL account, and the latency is generally low & stable - kinda makes my secondary SAIX-based shaped 1GB pre-paid ADSL account redundant, but I also use that for when I'm capped internationally on my ISDSL account...pleasantly surprised I am by ISDSL :)..

Nice to hear things working via IS. When using skypeout do you have technical info checked (found under options - advanced - display technical info). Next time you are in a call will you do me a favour and see what your round trip time is.

ATA?

I was considering something like this and had a look at retail prices for the various [specifically] Sipura things, but it's more than I want to spend - BTW what's the relationship between Linksys & Sipura?

ATA = Analog Telephone Adapter.
Was wondering that (about Linksys & Sipura) too actually, I thought Linksys maybe OEM'd them or something. Turns out Linksys (ie. Cisco) bought Sipura last year (link (http://andyabramson.blogs.com/voipwatch/2005/04/ciscos_linksys_.html)).

Ya unfortunately even the SPA1001 goes for about R550 :/

Anyone else using Broadband Talk?
