"How would you describe Telkom’s R 14.677 billion operating profit?"
Did they release their profit? Where is the article? Am I blind?

lol, I wouldn't do it. The earnings announcement hasn't stopped Telkoms share price from continuing to slip. Looks like the market at least see's some tough times ahead for telkom.

ok, they have 143,509 ADSL subscribers
average ADSL line price is R680 - ((R680 - R270) / 2) = R475
R475 * 12 months * 143,509 users = R818,001,300
this is very pesimistic calculation as most of those users have connected throughout the year so they have been paying on average for 6 months only, also I believe that they have many more 192 and 384 lines, than 512 or 1024 lines, so the average line price is probably more like <R400
so if they have abolished the ADSL line cost completely, they would have lost about R818,001,300, but realisitcly more like ~R500,000,000, or 1/30th of their profit.

Amazing that we are one of the very few countries with the worst Internet in the world but they make 14 billion profit. There must be something wrong with this picture. Pity the minister of communications likes giving away money to a handfull of investors.. probably foreign as well. Let's not forget that the government also gets it's odd 40% of that. Amazing that in this day and age of democracy that the government has it's finger in the pie where instead the private sector would sing halliluja anthums if they could get a share of that. I'm also sure if that would happen that it's customers would join the singing as they would then start to get real value for their money - instead of Telkom's 'take it or leave it' attitude - you have no where else to go.. bahaahahahahaha..

amen plugger
Wouldn't it be so awesome if we form a MyADSL company and we all donate money to it, and MyADSL co. buys loads of Telkom shares and eventually garners a majority shareholding?
*looks into the distance and sighs*

thank you telkom you money hungry whore
Sheesh, I was sued for 5 mil for saying less than that!! :D
Actually, we're the whores, and Telkom is a drug(money)-addicted rapist gangbanging all of us.
EDIT: Although, we are paying them to gangbang us, so perhaps they are whores after all.

Look at this page:
http://telkom.quickreport.co.za/telkom_ar_2005/html/index.php?page=telkom_ar_2005_286.html&activefile=1&Content=
At the bottom of the page where it says "Beneficial shareholders of more than 2%"
I wonder who these companies represent.
Black Ginger 33 (Proprietary) Limited*
NewShelf 763 (Proprietary) Limited*
I can't find any info about them on the net, but I suspect they might be fronts for Investment companies.

Quick Cipro (http://www.cipro.co.za/ccc/EntDet.asp?T1=M2004015130&T2=BLACK%20GINGER%2033&T3=2004/015130/07) search and google reveals that Black Ginger 33 is the PIC (http://www.pic.gov.za/).
Interestingly Newshelf (http://www.cipro.co.za/ccc/EntDet.asp?T1=M2004005194&T2=NEWSHELF%20763&T3=2004/005194/07) is PWC (http://www.pwc.com/za/eng/about/offices/za.html), chances are they're holding it for someone else, or did they get a really sweet commission during the listing?
OK, on the next page, you find out that all the shares are "purchased from Thintana by the PIC, and warehoused under Black Ginger (Proprietary) Limited and NewShelf 763 (Proprietary) Limited", must be the BEE shares that made millions from thin air for some ANC buddies.
Sheesh, I was sued for 5 mil for saying less than that!! :D
:D :D :D
I can't stop laughing...classic !!!!

Cost for Eassy cable +-350 mil $=2,5 billion Rand. With their profit Telkom could have installed 5 Eassy cables without having to share the cost with anyone and still have a profit of over 2 billion rand.
or
Free access for 10000 schools= R1000 pm * 12 =R12000 per annum = R120 million per annum. Not even a dent in the profit.
As opposed to Telkom's profit, the local taxi industry size is calculated at R18 billion per year.
They are greedy swine and a typical example of why common people eventually revolt!
But SAA also thought they could get away with murder and payback time is now arriving!
