But personally I think she ran a crap race.
She left waaaaay to much to do in the last 150m.
For a large part of the 800m she was dead last.
From SAPA:
Caster Semenya bagged South Africa's sixth medal at the London Olympic Games, when she finished second in the women's 800m final on Saturday night.
Semenya, the 2009 world champion, crossed the line in one minute, 57.23 seconds, a seaon's best. The race was won by Mariyah Savinova of Russia in one minute 56,19 seconds. Ekaterine Poistogova of Russia was third, in one minute 57,53 seconds.

She ran that race badly - and I too am of the opinion that coaching is to blame. She can easily run two consistent laps.
Well done to the Russian for running a great paced race.
Edit: my bad - congrats to her still though on attaining Silver :D

Maria is a dumb bitch , because she will have been involved in Caster's strategy.
Being a multiple Olympic and WC and still not able to share her ' infinite wisdom ' knowing she has been there before makes her an even dumber bitch.
... Failing to acknowledge this , is looking at a stupid ignorant twat !!!

Silver sounds good but Caster would have known the Russian is the major threat and didn't try follow or try compete when the Russian took off.
Judging how she ran the race, how she didn't look tired or unhappy after the race or unhappy at the medal ceremony it looks like she never wanted to win.

Why do you always point out some insignificant writing mistake, when you run out of reasoning power. This avoidance tactic is sooo well known among the ANC 'elite'. Not everyone is using a device with a spell checker. Do you think we are all stupid and only you manage to figure out the typo? WTF
Semenia did what she could and the result is not bad at all. If any of you think she did bad, you are welcome to show how it should be done. I wonder if the silver was not intentional. And who can blame her.

Great race, unfortunately her first lap let her down. Whether she lacks the confidence/ability/correct strategy; I am not to sure but nevertheless she did us proud, especially her last 200m were phenomenal.

This. She placed 8 and 9 in events coming up to this tournament. She did season best and placed second in the Olympics. A large part because of her new coach. She could have won but there were a couple of things that played against her. The American went like a bat out of hell in the beginning and this meant the race was much faster than she would have liked. The Russian also kicked at the same time she did but was much further forward in the group. She needed to kick a bit earlier. All lessons that she will need to learn. She has not really been competing a lot and will need to get back into it. She will also need to learn to deal with the faster races better.
Silver is great for Semenya and Team SA. Gold would have been the cherry on top of a thoroughly enjoyable games, but she ran a fantastic final 150m to claim second. She is young enough to be a real challenge for the foreseeable future.

I don't think she was bad in her first lap. She just needed to start running hard at the start of the second lap instead of at the 300m mark. For example, look at this one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LHid-nC45k&feature=player_embedded
He also kicked in the last 300 but made sure he wasn't too far behind the danger people. She was a bit too far back from the danger people and she had plenty left in her when she crossed the line so could easily have gone at 400m out.

I agree! I think she intentionally didn't win because of the bad publicity she would have received if she won. People might say she won because of her unusually high testosterone levels (for a woman) or because she has internal testes, no womb, no ovaries, etc. Just before the race began and during the introductions of the athletes, Caster Semenya was mentioned by the British TV commentator as "the controversial" South African athlete. So if she won, her win would have been controversial. To be honest, I'm glad she won silver and not a Gold medal.

Is it just me or does Caster have significantly more breast tissue compared to when she competed in the IAAF Champs?
Regarding the race, I cannot help but think it was an intentional silver. She ran the last 100m like a bat out of hell and did not appear tired at all in the end.

I noticed as well. My comment to my SO was "implants?" ...
I wonder if she wouldn't be better suited to a longer distance race? She seems to have loads of stamina.

i actually thought this as well. perhaps she threw it because she didn't want to face the publicity again like the world athletic championships.

If she listened to the semi finals commentator that would definitely cause her to think twice about winning. The guy basically just stopped short of an outright accusation, he kept going on about how unbelievable her times were - unbelievable!

For those that watched the World Championships in Daegu last year, you would have seen that the same Russian athlete (Mariya Savinova) beat Caster at the finish line. Caster ran out of steam there.
In this Olympics she might have decided to try a different tactic but clearly that Russian was still stronger than her.
But well done nonetheless even though silver was a bit of an anticlimax after she recorded the fastest time in the semis.
