And maybe some general baking stuff.... and a caserol dish I could put in the oven, yaknow, for potato bake and chicken or whatever.

I want the Jamie Oliver stuff, anyone has any more suggestions/ideas and most importantly how much it'll cost?

ATM I have *nothing* except some plates/cups/cutlery and I'm really trying to start to cook more since I'm in my own place now and need to be healthier

The Jamie Oliver stuff is Le Creuset. It's expensive, but I love them. They're awesome. I only buy them when they're on special at Binuns (20% discount is a lot).
Their wok-pan thingy is a mofo pan that's quite deep and worth it - R1200
The pots are around R1000-R2000 depending on the size.

If you want steel, go AMC. I have a crapload of AMC pots and some of them are 30 years old already and still in mint condition. A set goes for around R10-15k last I checked.

Loving the Neoflam stuff just because it's so easy to wash. I have other pots too, but the ex-SO chose to get these as his first set after using mine mostly for that reason. Pots are oven-safe too.

EDIT: Price was just over R1k for set of 3 with lids. You need to get non-metal utensils so you don't scratch it too.

I don't think Jamie Oliver 's items = Le Creuset. It's two seperate brands.

Jamie Oliver's cookware are made by T-Fal

I have a mix of T-Fal, Scanpan and Woolies and the new Woolies stuff is working quite well

No no, I mean he uses those. He uses other brands as well but I often see him using one of the dishes I have, except he uses a metal spoon in it

Who cares about showing it to the wife (not that I have one)...

That site would quite easily bankrupt me... and I will be dropping large amounts there in the not too distant future.

I also just love the way they do business...

Bought myself a set of Wursthof knives, next day it was at my door in a nice big box, with a personally written thankyou note and all that... was just a really nice shopping experience.

you don't need 4k for a decent set of pots and unless you intend doing lots of cooking and entertaining I wouldn't get hung up on any of the big brand names, also you just need to decide what type of pots you need to get by, I probably only have 4 or 5 that get used on an almost daily basis, the rest get used a couple of times a month

We got a gift from someone via the site, they asked for our address in the evening and in the morning it was waiting at my office for me before I got there.

Not even sure how that is possible.

Oh and Wursthof are also great, we got a knife for R700. Its over 1k now... so kind of like an investment.

Agreed with Adams, amazing stuff! If you want an inside contact, drop me a PM. You know us Indians and our contacts hehe...

Also can vouch for AMC. My mum has some pots that are at least 23 years old. One of them had to have the handle replaced, they did it free on 3 days. But the rest look very good for their age. Most of them in are in daily use also.

BTW, I spoke with the shop drone about those De Buyer pans: for all they've got a steel handle with a silicone coating over them, they're oven-safe. And, as if that's not enough, by design they end up being non-stick ...and *steel* implements-safe, so no more having to molly-coddle the pan with those silicone/nylon/fibreglass (http://www.yuppiechef.co.za/cuisipro.htm?id=706&name=Cuisipro-Fibreglass-Turner) (!) utensils, you can get something autoclave safe (http://www.yuppiechef.co.za/global-accessories.htm?id=610&name=Global-Spatula---Slotted-GS-27) :p

Er, I budget perfectly thanks. I even have income/expense projections going 12 months ahead so that if I decide to spend R100 now, I can see what kind of effect that might have 12 months down the line (if any)

The problem is just these guys needed to make the deductions on Monday, on a different account, one that I keep for them specifically. I changed to a different account several years ago. This same company tried deducting R34000 off my account for a R110 invoice a few months ago, so much so that I had to cancel the card otherwise I'd have faced a very steep "debit order declined" fee from the bank. Same company, different division, 3 months later. Same crap. They charge a the account I changed from several years back instead of the new one that's been running for the past few years now.

Same ****, "billing issues, we apologize so profusely"

In the meantime, my petrol money I have left over is jacked and I go into the minus. Just because they can't:

a) Keep to the date I said I want to be debited
b) Debit me more than they said they would
c) Uses a random account almost every month

What kind of company is so terrible? Horrible service. You need to raise your voice at that kind of thing.

My wife has also started mentioning new pots recently. My mom has AMC pots from before I was born so I want to buy maybe 1 pot per year. She's definitely not impressed with that and wants a complete set. Her mother has the Bastille range of pots similar to the AMC ones which I think are also quite good. How is the Bastille range of pots?

I'd go with AMC pots....growing up, my mum used those pots and when I visit the folks now many, many years later, those pots are still in use! I personally also use them now. They are not cheap to say the least but really is worth the investment of having quality cookware.

Game has a "kitchen in a box" for R400. You should pick that up. Pretty much everything you need in a kitchen. The pots are decent and the utensils/accessories are very cheap quality but they work. Get that this month then over the next few months you can slowly add quality cookware to your collection.

I think AMC is a serious overkill, unless you have a indian or italian aunty hiding in your pantry!

le creuset does the trick for me. its amazing how you can cook something in LC, and it tastes a million times better than Stainless Steel or anything else. ( I even got the LC stainless steel pots x 2 and they not so bad either..should be like regular SS or maybe marginally better.. not AMC though for sure!)
There's old wives tales about cast iron etc etc.. didnt believe it till I cooked in it. Boy was I amazed!
definately wait for them to go on special at less 20%..... you could pick up maybe 3 pots, and a few other odds and ends for under R5k.
and LC is for life man! cast iron is HARD!

Go into Woolies get your self a large, medium size pot and frying pan. thats all you need for now.

Dude I doubt that you are going to cook dinners for 12 people etc so the above is all you need.

I really like my amc pots etc, but I bought a set of pots from Game 20 years ago for R399-00 and they work perfect right up to now.

I think Game still stocks them it has a glass lid with Gold handles.

Your best bet is if you choose a pot look for something with a relatively heavy base

|Start of small and let your gf choose the rest

Skywalker786
22-10-2012, 08:21 PM
BTW Woolies has a very reasonably priced set of cast iron pots that look exactly like Le Cruset at a third of the price

IanM

Bastille might be a knock off, but it's much cheaper than LC.

LC 31cm roaster = R2400 http://www.lecreusetshop.co.za/details.asp?CID=69&id=664
Bastille 33cm roaster = R1249

Almost half the price. And if the quality is similar it's quite a bargain.

If you use metal implements in enamelled cookware you can scratch the enamel.
