Last night I tried to watch a video clip, but got a message that I need a certian CODEC. I then clicked on the link provided for the CODEC, and now my PC are constantly giving me a pop-up message that my PC is infected and wants me to download some anti-spyware program. It also constantly resets my home page to "about: blank". Can someone help me to get rid of it? At this stage I cannot give more info, because I am at work and it is my home PC that is infected. Any help will be appreciated.

Not very bright are we ???.
But it serves you right for watching p0rn :).

Your PC is infected with a trojan ... download and run Spybot S&D to get rid of it.

:D

I know someone who had the same problem.
The codec you downloaded has installed .exe and .dll files into the system32 folder. You need to identify them (they will have last nights date time stamp on them) and either find the removal tool on the net for them, or manualy remove them after booting into dos (don't do this unless you know what you are doing or you may corrupt windows) and then you need to remove them from the registry.

Good luck

EDIT: You can also try giving your PC a shower....

Get some good anti-spyware software. I use XoftSpy, which I am highly impressed with, but it is not free.

Rubbing garlic all over it also helps :).

on a serious note, the guy's answer hasnt been answered.
dude, go get the following applications using google to search for them
look for : search and destroy, and ad aware personal edition. < download both and install, run and see what they find
for a good free online anti virus scan, go to www.pccillin.com and click on House Call

www.pccillin.com and click on House Call Or, more directly, here (http://housecall.trendmicro.com/). But, and presuming an XP box, the first thing I'd do is a 'rollback', i.e. 'System Restore' to before the installation ..and then redo the codec installation with something safe.

Another new piece of malware is rootkit - hidden files on your system
Check this for a program that will scan your system

r00tkits are satanspawn, and the newer r00tkits are much more troublesome to remove.

Only way to recover from r00tkit hacks is to nuke said windows installation and start reinstallation from scratch.

Besides, you'll never know whether you uninstalled said fscking app properly.

Another way would be to use a "virtual" machine to surf the Web, and it's quicker to "rollback" an virtual machine than reinstalling from scratch.

Or rub garlic all over and take the infamous Zuma shower, like suggested earlier... ;) :p :)

It's advertisements, especially banner adverts - just ignore these for the rubbish they are.
