My suggestion would be to go with .net, much faster to roll out new developments and much more powerfull.
If you are a lazy bum like me,... asp there is allot more free code available :)

just use PHP rather.
If you HAVE to use ASP, then consider
1) classic ASP can be written in notepad and is easy to update
2) ASP NET is a pain to update, but does have a decent IDE.

For Application .Net
For Web based stuff php/css/asp

but it's not a web application language. If you wanna do web sites, learn php and Css.
.net sites are awefully slow.

don't even look at asp... It is a dead language.
asp.net all the way. The IDE is now free as well.
Updating is a nightmare if you don't fully grasp the concept of it, but it is a million times better than asp.
Edit: .Net sites are not slow. The first load on the first visitor is slow then it is just as fast if not faster than asp
PHP is an ugly language

Not if written properly. In my experience, .net sites have been faster than ASP sites they have replaced.
It all depends how you code. Even PHP sites can be slow if not coded efficiently.
My advice? ASP.Net is a stepping stone to the entire .Net platform (You have to learn a language to write in ASP.Net - C# your best choice for sure). ASP/PHP is a stepping stone to...?

Mmmmmmm
I firmly disagree with you there... .net kicks bum on any level, application or web based. I can't believe you pulled in php as a comparison to .net, I am amazed:eek:

ok, it's old, most ppl code extreamly bad in it, but it works... :D & lotsa free code avaliable for it. (me begining to like coding in notepad, sad i know :))
but learning .Net will make you more employable. It's easier, and probibly faster to develop something new.

but learning .Net will make you more employable. It's easier, and probibly faster to develop something new. That is true for SA, I fully agree with you there, but most of my buds abroad are PHP... Which is fine as php is fine. The same can be said of asp. At the end of the day to know them all is probably the best as they all have their own advantages. If you have never programmed before I suggest start with .net as it will switch on allot of lights for PHP and ASP.
Mmmmmmm, on 2nd thought why don't you just learn foxpro and design sites with foxpro... :D

Defintely ASP.Net over classic ASP. But make sure you check out PHP first. In most cases its a better choice than MS. (Except perhaps in large enterprises here, most of which run MS products).

You're right about being more employable (which is why I'm now doing ASP.Net) but PHP is way easier to learn than ASP.Net and quicker to develop in.

Learn .net, then use that knowledge to code better php apps :D

Seriously, I was an ASP developer before .Net came out. Now my ASP skills, while valuable in learning .Net quickly (and developing efficient sites), are hardly called upon. It's .Net all the way. Not just ASP.Net either.

That's whats so cool about ASP.Net. It uses all the same libraries as the rest of the framework so its not such a jump to go to developing Winforms apps once you know ASP.Net.

What software can be used to program in PHP? I want something with simplicity like Frontpage. I currently purchased Macromedia Dreamweaver but everything looks so congested and complex that i'm regretting spending so much cash!
I've also looked at some PHP code, it looks like a nightmare!
I'm still torn between ASP or ASP.net
By the way, does anyone have an alternative server program besides IIS to run ASP?

i am not a asp or .net coder my any stretch of the imagination, however flash i my baby and integrating it with asp was cool but with flash 8 and .net most of my wishes came true.
.net certianly a great and powerful language - mix it with flash actionscript and you have the ability to do anything you want.
although adobe/macromedia tend to use php or cold fusion for alot of their examples.
i think iis is the best thing to use for asp, alternatives can often be buggy.

Frontpage always had issues with good quality HTML coding. So I will never go back, anyway not at this stage... Dreamweaver at this stage is the closest to what I need to design websites using PHP. However with ASP.net... .Net VS2005

I've had a change of view about DW...
Been using Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 for a week now and very impressed.
I'm having trouble with the tables but i guess i will get used to it given some time.
I think it works best with ASP. Database intergration is a piece of cake as well.
