these "free" internet packages usually require you to sign a contract, I don't know about this Telscum one, but when I signed up with Mweb a few years back I got the first three months free,

Nope, no contracts here....
The setup on the CD, after you select to register for this FREE, NO OBLIGATION 60 day trail, creates a new Network Connection 'Connect To TelkomInternet' to a TollFree number 0800006986. Your IE homepage gets changed to 'https://online.telkomsa.net/oem/index.html' so that you can securely register for the trail without occurring any telephone costs!
The 0800 number connects you to a secure off-internet server is seems, as the above URL is not accessible directly from the internet.

what's the username and password? If you willing to share, just pm it
/sarcasm on
what's the username and password? If you willing to share, just pm it
Well they gave me:
User name: 021855-ld13@telkomsa.net
Pass word: 021855avyder3
Just tell me if this is not what you meant.
Like I said before, this registration happens on an off-internet server.
The funny thing is, I got a internet start-up CD from a particular ISP some time back. The registration page connected you to a server. Now here's the fun part...You had FULL internet access while filling in the registration page, that lasts as long as you want it to! So I had some Free internet…that was real interesting that a loop hole like that existed.
Telkom is of course smarter than that. If you’re connected to their TelkomInternet registration server through the free dial-up number, you won’t be able to access the internet like with the other isp’s registration CD I mentioned.
Did anyone give this Free 60-day TelkomInternet a try?

How do you get that Telkom thing to work!?
When I click register now it opens a notepad file.

Register? What do you mean? Did you run the CD,then let it set up a new DailUp connection, then opened your IE to 'register' on the website https://online.telkomsa.net/oem/index.html using that new connection??

Yeah I did that, thanks.
The CD wasn't opening that link for some reason.
I found the link in the .txt file.
My mom refuses to give her credit card details. And I really want to use the offer. I went to rAge today and I got 4 CDs (my mom got one, I got one, my brother got one and I had one from the YOU magazine), so it is basically like 240 days free internet. So is there a way I can use it without her credit details?
Thanks so much.

Say, talking about rAge, what do you think of Telkom's stand this year compared to the one they had last year?

Yip, there is. Use yours. ;)
I've actually not activated/used this offer before…so I do now know of any (legal) ways of bypassing the CreditCard_Required input, yet

Beware of anything *free* from Telkom...
there usually are invisible strings attached... ;) :D

I know...
I especially looked for those ‘invisible strings’ while I was using and browsing the CD and inspecting the offer…but what’s the idea of invisible strings if you can see them easily, hey?

If it's free what do they want the credit card details for? Do you have to subscribe to TelkomInternet once the 60 day period is over

Not as far as I know...if I sum this up correctly you must cancel the service before the 60 day trail period expire (as if that’s going to be easy, hey), if you don’t your Credit Card gets charged automatically for your next month's service. Thereby they also cut out the possibility of a person using the offer more than once.
IOW:
First 30 days free
Next 30 days free
You automatically get charged for the next month if you did not cancel it in the previous 60 days.
My mom refuses to give her credit card details.
I would rate this the same as entering credit card (NOT YOURS) details on a Suspect internet Site
Telkom = Suspect Internet Site = RIPOFF
listen and learn

lol, I would 'trust' Telkom with it as the Credit Card Company and the law is on my side... ;)

In my opinion this is not too smart.
Also AFAIK, charging you if you fail to cancel is illegal. Your continued subsciption should depend on you accepting by performing some sort of action not inaction. There is a name for this type of selling but it slips my mind right now.

Don't even get me started. Just do not trust them.

It's called 'inertia marteting' and it's been illegal in SA for about a year and a half. Unfortunately though, I don't know if this kind of thing - where they don't charge you the first two months and then charge you for the month after and so on - would be considered inertia marketing. This is because there is some kind of initiating action on your part- where you took up the initial 2 months for free.
Be very careful when accepting any 'free' offers from Telkom. Always be sure to read the fine print. Never sign a contract with Telkom unless absolutely unavoidable. READ THE FINE PRINT. Do not trust that Telkom will comply with the law because all too often they do not.

ah, please do check the date when I said that...
Yes it could not be accessed from the outside, seems that changed sometime…Its Telkom you know

Those of you who want to get all cozy and cuddly with Telkom, READ THIS THREAD (http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?p=692267#post692267) before going off to sign your sanity away...
No ways will I sign a contract with them ever again... because if you fall into arrears and want to cancel because you can't afford the payment, then you can't cancel and the outstanding amount will grow every month...
So, I would NOT trust them with my credit card or banking details, I'll rather do the schlepp of going to the shop and pay them.
