View Full Version : Help - Playing a recorded DVD (DVD-R) on my MBP?

Morning all.
I use a pioneer DVD recorder at home, and like to record movies and such that I like onto DVD-R disks (normally onto DVD-RW to erase and reuse for everyday use).
The other night I wanted to try Instant Handbrake, so I popped in one of the DVDs that I recorded, but my MBP doesn't pick up that the disk is inserted. I suppose I should mention that the Pioneer creates the disk, and close it etc when it is a DVD-R to be able to play it on a normal DVD player (which I can do on both a Windows machine and normal "TV" DVD player). So it does work, but just not on my Mac ... Any ideas?

Strange - have you tried writing to the same media on another device?

Media has been closed, so I can't. Oh, and it happened with two of my DVD-R disks, not just the one. I are very oh so confused

I mean writing something on a new dvd r/rw using something other than the pioneer. If you stick a blank into the mbp does it pick it up? It's just to see if its the actual media that the mbp dislikes or something else.

Well if Instant Handbrake is 'bout the same as Handbrake, there is sometimes a problem with refreshing the current loaded disk... in handbrake going to file/open dvd sorts that out.
Sometimes there is also a conflict with the DVD player. Set your DVD player preferences to "do nothing" when a disk is loaded.
BTW is your dvd recognised by the finder/front row/dvd player?

I burned a data disk the other day, using the same media type/brand/spec, and it worked perfectly. Can read it on the MBP (and WinXP) as well.

So the media plays using dvd player?
If it does, then maybe its a bug in Instant Handbrake... maybe see what happens using Handbrake or MacTheRipper?

So the DVD has been finalised by the recorder? Odd

A quick summary to answer all the questions:
the DVD has been closed by the recorder, and plays on a normal DVD player and notebook DVD player (HP running WinXP)
Neither the DVD Player software on the MAC, nor Instant Handbrake picks up that there is a disk in the machine
MBP picks up blank disks just fine, and can write to them and read from them
So I don't think it is a Handbrake problem, as the machine as a whole doesn't recognise the disk

I read a post on a different forum that something similar happened but for some reason it showed up when they used boot camp or parallels. Have you tried that?

I wanted to try parallels now, but realised the damn disk is at home ... stupid me!

Try to see if you can mount the disk using disk utility, but this is probably a long shot.
Sounds like your DVR is probably closing the disk in a format that is not 100% ISO compliant? Is the disk recorded using some sort of pioneer compression scheme or long play equivalent? Check your DVR record settings, can you set it to force ISO compliance?
Check apple for firmware updates for the superdrive... I saw something a while back, but if I recall correctly it affected mostly some macminis.

@Bob, Not too sure about the closing of the disk, but it definitely works on other players (than the Pioneer). Now that you mention it, it might be on LP recording, but I doubt it as I record the stuff I want to keep on SP (for quality). Will have a look though when I get home tonight.
All firmware is up to date (according to the MAC's software updater)

Checked apple and the superdrive firmware update was for the g4 macmini and a bunch of powerbooks... was worth a shot.
Drop a post if you get it to work.

If I don't get around to doing it tonight, I will bring the disks in to the office tomorrow. You guys can take me through a Step-by-step :D
Thanks for all the feedback!

Nope, not really. Maybe it is the 3cm scratch that I buffed out last night that made the difference :D

Roughly translated: Dear lilDeath, I will take your 3.2kg Dell notebook, with its protruding extended battery needed to get close to the BMP's battery life, and shove it up your not so lil butt :D
Mods: This is a joke, and intended as such, and lilDeath will (hopefully) see it as such :D
