View Full Version : Spam suggestion
Hi,
I was wondering if there's a way to limit new users to creating a new thread after at least 10 posts?

I am a member on a huge forum based in the US. All new users posts are first cleared by a mod before they appear. I think this would be better than limiting users by not allowing them to start threads.

Or, give them (potential spammers) an IQ test of SA broadband, if they answer - Telkom is the best broadband - automatic suspension :p

I like that idea, even if only for first threads ...

Yeah just has to be for the first few times, maybe first 5 posts or so. It works like a charm.

Thinking about it, it doesn't have to be a moderator - it could just be a trusted member (mini-moderator)

Or trusted members - it wouldn't be a very pleasant task for just 1 person to do.

I agree.
A user must only be able to start a new thread after 10 posts.
Yeah 1 person would suffer a bit, trusted members is a better idea.
Having said that, I think we need more mods on the board (not me thank you, I'm leaving the country) :)

I agree.
A user must only be able to start a new thread after 10 posts.
The problem is there's nothing stopping them from spamming on other peoples threads. Their first 10 or 15 posts should be screened by mods/trusted members before they go live.
Here comes the censors.
You don't like what they say... Don't participate!!!

A spammer would not be interested in contributing in a ZA ADSL thread if it's too much trouble. :p

The problem there is that you would probably find a lot of posts needing to be moderated, the current spam reporting tool would still work and spam would be reduced - from what I have seen most of it is posted in new threads

http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/moderation
it seems that vbulletin allows for moderation of all new threads/posts - but I cannot determin if this can be set for certain users (low post counts...) only
edit: another example of why this is needed: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=53701
Quick on the draw this evening... the above link is the reason for this suggestion.

Well it depends on what forum system you are using. My ASP forums all have the feature where I can set certain membership levels. I can link privilages to those levels based on the quantity of posts made by members. VBulletin is the best forum out there and has even more advanced settings in the backend. So if you use either VBulleting or Webwizforums you should be able to set it in the backend. Modurating posts before making them visible can cause problems and actually delay forum discussions and is not wise if you have a growing forum, but if you feel it will not cause a problem, that can also be a solution.

Could be done, but the volume of posts would be tantamount to a book every few hours... ;)
We nip spam quite quickly through bad posts reporting. Members are very helpful...

I think it would be a bad idea to prevent new users from creating new threads as alot of new users join the forum to ask a question. Would it be possible to limit new members to like 2 posts in the first hour or somthing like that, this would give enough time for there spam to be reported and for them to be banned.

If you have enough dedicated moderators you don't need not to worry about spam that much. Just ensure your moderators are all registered on automail for posts so they can receive email notification and go and check on the post. I realy agree with BrianB with regards to preventing newbies from creating new threads they must be allowed. You can also require email activation of membership if spam is such a big issue...

Thats a cure, what we need is prevention.I think we have to rely upon the cure being effective. I dont think the problem is bad enough that people should have to meet criteria before they're allowed to post or create a thread.
The mods do a good enough job taking out the rubbish.
