View Full Version : Huawei E620 data card & USSD commands

I've been trying to get USSD commands to work on the Huawei E620 card without success. I have now established that they work perfectly with a Virgin Mobile or a Vodacom SIM card, for some reason they don't work with my MTN SIM. Is there any way that USSD commands can be blocked on my SIM card? Is there anything I can do to get them working?

Thanks, I also found a page on MTN's site that describes many of the USSD commands:
http://www.mtn.co.za/default.aspx?pid=242246
I have no problem using them on my phone, its just on the data card I get no response. I know the format in which I am sending the commands is correct as they work with Virgin and Vodacom SIM cards. I just want to know if MTN are blocking them or if I need to activate something in order to get them to work?

I have a Virgin Mobile 128k Sim card in my MTN E620 card.
I tried the following command via the Hyperterminal program:
AT+CUSD=1,"*101#",15
The only response that I do get is the "OK" message.
How did you manage to get it working?

The following are all captures from Hyper terminal.
With 32K Vodacom SIM:
AT+COPS?
+COPS: 0,2,"65501",0
OK
AT+CUSD=1,"*100#",15
OK
+CUSD: 0,"Your account is 3.01",0
With 128K Virgin Mobile SIM:
AT+COPS?
+COPS: 0,2,"65507",0
OK
AT+CUSD=1,"*101#",15
OK
+CUSD: 0,"Air Time left R 25.73. Please enter *122# and press call to check on your V Rewards.",15
The AT+COPS? command gets your operator code, 65501 is Vodacom SA and 65507 is Cell-C SA (used by Virgin Mobile).
It does take a few seconds after the OK is received before the +CUSD response comes from the network.

Hi gings,
AT+COPS? is working for me but not the AT+CUSD=1,*101#",15 command. (Using the 128k VM SIM)
(The reply message is just the OK prompt).
Maybe the problem is with my firmware version.
My card's version numbers are as follow:
Firmware version: 11.16.08.01.00
Hardware version: CD21TCPU Ver. B

OK, one guide for the n00bs coming up ;)
First you need to establish on which COM port you can communicate with your data card.
Click on Start
Right-click on My Computer
Select Properties from the drop-down menu
The System Properties dialog should appear
Click on the Hardware tab
Click on the Device Manager button
The Device Manager should open
Click on the + to the left of Ports
Take note of the COM port of the Huawei Mobile Connect - 3G PC UI Interface (COMx).
Close Device Manager
Click Cancel on the System Properties dialog
Now we start HyperTerminal.
Click on Start
Move to All Programs
Move to Accessories
Move to Communications
Click HyperTerminal
HyperTerminal should open with the Connection Description dialog visible
Enter a name for this connection; Huawei Mobile Connect - 3G PC UI Interface is good
Select an icon if you like
Click OK
The Connect To dialog should appear
Select the COM port you took note of previously from the Connect Using drop-down
Click OK
The COMx Properties dialog should appear
Select 115200 from the Bits per second drop-down
Click OK
Type ATI and press Enter to verify you are communicating with the card
You should get a response similar to the following:
Manufacturer: HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD.
Model: 226
Revision: I:11.16.09.09.00
IMEI: ***************
+GCAP: +CGSM,+FCLASS,+DS

Guys,
Essentially what we going to do is ginggs and Huawei have got a fix for the USSD commands which we can put onto the normal upgrade when you update open the Huawei MTN UI and it comes up with the update you just click update and you'll essentially be able to make use of the USSD commands

The reason for the firmware upgrade is that I would like to use the ussd commands on the Huawei Companion Software supplied by GINGGS.
Why is it so hard to get hold of the new firmware?
I think we all would like to be able to use the ussd command on the MTN software. When can we expect availability of something of this sort?

As the firmware becomes available it will be on the MTN UI under the upgrade option, The firmware version given out by Huawei to Ginggs still had some problems in terms of the information given to the MSC so as soon as the Firmware version which will allow the USSD commands is ready I can assure you we'll make it available, we are not in the business of delaying things further than we have to so I can assure you we are working on making this feature available to you guys and gals

We were suppose to have a meeting today which was cancelled - There are a couple of issues I needed to raise e.g. so will have to raise this with them when we reschedule along with the above
MTNDD
• USSD Commands for E620 - Confirmed working with new firmware
• USSD Commands for E220 - Not reliable on current firmware
• Firmware availability - Firmware upgrades should be freely available to customers, or at the very least from MTN service centres, at no charge
• Vista 32-bit drivers - These shouldn't still be in Beta
• Vista 64-bit drivers - When will these be available?
• Data counters for E620 - Data counters are in inaccurate after a connection is dropped due to bad signal or congestion
• E620 F@stlink Software – Data counters are not saved if user down or logs out while application is running.

Is this process applicable to the E220?
Device Manager says it's on COM5. I've set up hyperterminal to talk to COM5. It connects happily but I get nothing back. No echoed characters, no response at all even from "ati<enter>". Are there any important settings for the connection?
btw hyperterminal cannot connect when Huawei Mobile Connect is open. Presumably the COM port is in use and locked.

Make sure you're using the COM port for the "3G PC UI Interface", not the "3G Application Interface". As far as settings go; bits per second: 115200, data bits: 8, parity: none, stop bits: 1, flow control: hardware.

That is strange, I was able to talk to an E220 on the "3G PC UI Interface", unfortunately I only had the unit on loan for a short while so I cannot try again now.
The Modems category has "HUAWEI Mobile Connect - 3G Modem" and under Properties > Modem it says COM4. COM4 works in hyperterminal.
You can use the modem COM port, but only while you're offline, otherwise you'll be told the port is already in use.
Revision: 11.109.03.00.67
I had the same firmware on the E220 I tested.
but from AT+CUSD=1,"*123#",15 or anything similar, just 'OK' and no other response.
Try a couple of times, and wait a few seconds for the response to come back. I found with the E220 I would sometimes get no response, sometime complete garbage and other times it would be fine.
Do I need to get a firmware upgrade?
This probably can be fixed with a firmware upgrade, like it was for the E620.

I suggest you find out what it is that's connecting you to the internet without your knowledge, it could be a setting in your browser or your email client, or even worse some malicious software installed on your computer.

Normally, yes, but I know there is a setting where you can disable the network connection icon in your system tray, so I guess it is possible for malicious software to do this as well. You can also check your automatic updates for Windows and your anti-virus software.
Getting back on topic :), have you tried using Hyper Terminal again?

So you've at least managed to disconnect from the internet now. :)
From the +CUSD response you received, it would appear your firmware is not capable of correctly handing USSD commands.

I've hunted high and low for a place where one can download it, and the only place where I found one was Netcom, a network operator in Norway. Unfortunately, if you use their firmware upgrade you end up with a network-locked data card!
I believe MTN_DD is going to raise the issue of firmware upgrades when he meets with Huawei soon.

The PC UI interface is inaccessible when the MTN F@stlink program is open. You can be online without the MTN F@stlink program being open.

A wait of 5 or 10 seconds should have been enough. Do you have a good signal?

With Prometheus' help, we've discovered that the Huawei Mobile Connect program seems to put the card into a binary mode, thereafter it stops understanding normal AT commands. Try running HyperTerminal just after you're booted up or just after you've plugged in the card.

Newsflash. (To me at least - is this in your noddy guide? :) I only thought of this because I remembered that COM5 connected but didn't respond to any commands.)
I open TWO hyperterminal sessions, one to COM4 and one to COM5. (Port numbers discovered as in my earlier post. This is on the E220 USB modem, not the E620.)
In the COM4 session, I type:
at+cusd=1,"*141#",15
and get the response
OK
A few seconds later, in the COM5 session, I get the response:
+CUSD: 0,"Y'ello, You have R20.00 airtime and 45.00MB Data remaining.
You are on MTN Call per second.
Brought to you by MTN.",0
Success!

But removing it and replugging it is enough to make it work.
I can live with this. Firmware to make the response come via the same COM port would be a minor improvement. An update to Huawei Mobile Connect to support USSD commands would be great. ;)

Normally COM4 would be in use by your internet connection and you can use COM5 to do things like checking the signal strength or sending USSD commands, and then the response would come back on the same port. Not sure why it's ignoring your requests on COM5, does it only happen after running Mobile Connect?

I hadn't thought to try this. Yes, it works on COM5 before running mobile connect - requests and both immediate and delayed responses on the same session.
But mobile connect blocks both COM4 and COM5 when active (can't find the device if hyperterminal is using either port) and as already noted after mobile connect closes, it does not respond in ascii on COM5 (no character echo and no responses). (No urgency to fix this.)

I believe that's the correct behaviour, the ^MODE:3,2 is an unsolicited response from the data card to say it's now in GPRS mode, it should only go to the UI COM port, not the modem COM port.
Getting back to USSD commands, they seem to be working correctly now with the 11.110.05.00.67 firmware for the E220.

I have a Telia (swedish operator) branded E620 that isn't working very well. I got this card in July -06 so I guess the firmware is pretty old. For comparison I just got a E220 with which I am able to get full bandwith downloads (45 - 50 kbytes/s) as compared to 2 - 12 for the E220 card.
What I really would like is a firmware that removes the network lock, but that might be hoping for too much.

anyways.. everytime i want to load talk time to buy a bundle i need to dial 555 listen to the promps enter voucher pin disconnect dial 55 listen to .... for each voucher pin (normaly around 3 to 4). i do this twice a month.... have to redial caus eif i dont the software errors out and mtn recieves an invalid key used so locks the recharge feature (had to call in to get them to unblock it a few times till i realised where the issue sat)
so today read all the threads on the topic to get a solution... enter my genius google searching capabilities (LMAO jokes just got lucky i guess)
http://www.google.com/search?num=30&hl=en&client=opera&rls=en&q=%2B%22huawei+E620%22+%2BUSSD+%2BMTN+&btnG=Search
the link i would like to bring your attention to..... *drum roll*
http://www.nerve.org.za/e620tool/
damn thing works to send USSD commands etc. its super small to... hmm im surprised mtn havent included the feature in their software... if somone can build it into a 92KB exe... im sure mtn's 34mb when installed could contain it :P
wish mtn would make a 4gig bundle to :( or better yet take away the 30 day waiting thing to load the next bundle.. i have 2 sim cards already :(
hmmmm to the mtn dude.... (thats for all the smiley spam you posted :P)

My e620 MTN Datcard keeps hanging from time to time, seems it could be a faulty datacard. Anyone know of a reset command for use in Hyperterminal? Its a real humbug when your trying to download a huge secure music file from say Beatport. I currently have to reboot my PC to get it operational again.

What does your AT+CUSD command look like?

Can you a provide link for the firmware update please?
Two quick questions, does the E270 work at all with MDMA (http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=59080) and does the USSD function work?
Welcome to MyBroadband! :)

I just want to find out how to get register a network using Mobile Partners on my Huawei E1550 USB Modem. It worked fine initially, but then I used a Vodacom card and went into network, manually register, it picked up all the networks in SA, I clicked Vodacom (3G), now I cant use my MTN Card on it.
Initially it was locked on UK 3G, but I unlocked it and I have the NCK and Flash Code, but when I try to unlock again, it say already unlocked.
Could you tell me why or what to do to make it pick up all networks aagain....
Thanks in advance....
KC
Launch Mobile Partner.
In Tools select Options
Select Network, below Profile Management
In the Network Type droplist select WCDMA preferred
In the Bands select All Bands
