Funny enough in Eastern Europe you can ask such questions quite comfortably. What's your name?, What do you do?, What do you earn?.
I upset a Spanish person once by asking what her new boyfriend did for a living?
Amazing how cultures are so different!

Just a note, as silly as it sounds, when Americans refer to SCHOOL they mean UNIVERSITY/COLLEGE/TERTIARY TRAINING. They don't mean high school.

It is actually pointless to ask a salary in another country without a conversion factor.
EG How many beers (specify size) can be bought with take home salary.
Likewise car, house, eggs, milk, doctors visit etc
You then get a better idea of the effect of a salary on your standard of living.

Well honestly, I do not know how anyone can survive on a salary of less than ZAR 25k a month these days for a household. Even then you must be counting every cent.
The irony is that many IT guys are earning less that 10k a month...
