Hi there

I woz just calculating wot would be the best solution if I wanted to download the most bang-for-my-buck

Should I get an uncapped 64k line or a dsl 4mb with a cap to match that of the maximium download limit of a 64k line if it dl 24/7 non stop...

ie if a 64k uncapped could download for example 5 gigz in a month then wouldnt it be cheaper 2 get dsl with a 5 gig cap??

I'm not quite sure on the correct maths etc so could sum1 please do the workings out for the max download limit of a 64k line and a dsl 4mb or 1mb

Thanks

If u referring to a 64k diginet or similar you should get 8KBytes a second and assuming you get 8KB/s constantly for 24 hrs a day over 30 days you can get approximately 20GB down and 20GB up so 40GB total traffic.

But then don't you pay for the phone calls?

Been there and done that (ISDN).
The problem is that even with the Infinite option you don't typically get more than about 10GiB per month. The line never stays maxed out unless it's an FTP or HTTP download and sometimes you get dropped calls.

I used my ISDN line to the max (always connected during callmore) and I'd download about 8GiB/month. With the ISP, phone line rental, Infinite option and the dial up costs it came to about R700 per month.
After upgrading to ADSL 384 kbps I pay about the same but have 3GiB intl + 30GB local accounts and I don't have to leave my PC running all night just to grab a 300MB file from somewhere.

The international bandwidth costs are my biggest issue now since I need to move a lot of geospatial data around for hobby/work purposes. I have to split uploads and downloads over a couple of months whereas with ISDN I could do it within a month.
The speed was an upgrade but the bandwidth limits was a DEFINITE downgrade.

It all depends on what you want to do with your connection.

With the reliability of ISDN being what it is, you could probably get more off a DSL line (of any speed) with a TelkomInternet account (random capping).

I dnt want 2 get ISDN coz I use internet in the day for business etc so dialup is out!

Or a R270 384k dsl + R999 uncapped ISP from openweb.... Then I am sorted!

Then wot is the point of a Diginet line etc?

Then wot is the point of a Diginet line etc?

Service Level Agreements and static IP.

If your Diginet line goes down they're supposed fix it within hours instead of days.
An old, outdated and overpriced technology that will die sooner or later.

Digitnet was "the" type of connection to have for business' until ADSL was introduced.
One of the reasons for the dynamic IP and 24 hour connection resets on ADSL was to stop business' from getting rid of their expensive Diginet lines in favour of the cheaper ADSL connections.
The dynamic IP and resets were supposed to make it hard to host Internet services on ADSL but people still find work arounds like dynamic DNS services.

So techically there is no point in getting a leased line anymore?

I had a look at the requirements to become a SAIX reseller and it stated to become a reseller you need a VANS licence and need at least a 64k diginet line.....

Why does 1 need a diginet line to become an ISP?....just curious!

Not unless you *really* need a static IP and a connection guaranteed 99% uptime.

We had a Diginet line at work, man what k@k.

I think it worked about 20% of the time. My boss eventually told the blue and green devil to shove their line where the sun don't shine :D

It all depends on what you want to do with your connection.

headstrong, as Paul_S says, it depends on what u r going to be downloading. Perhaps if u provide more info on the nature of your downloads, then forumites can give u better advice on the best solution :)

Just a suggestion. Use it, don't use it...

When you get the quote for 8 diginet lines you'll answer that question yourself!

Diginet line in the office:
ISP cost = R5930 Ex VAT
Telkom line rental = R2855 Ex VAT

So that is R8785 Ex VAT for 128kb/s local and 64kb/s international

Now get some prices for 512kbps of Diginet ...
