Well, look, I usually watch news at 7.00pm and have come to the following conclusions - the news is split between news/sports/waether - and so it goes, etv have better news, I cant explain why, they just have, so i generally watch etv for news, but, i do have the remote in my hand and do flick over at sabc sometimes. Now, the sport, SABC wins hands down, the etv sport should be renamed 10 minutes of soccer, if friggin irratating, soccer, soccer, soccer, thats all they have, i get f cross, and swear at the TV. Anyway so i flick over to SABC sport, much better, they have variety, and dont just do soccer. Weather iss better on ETV, maybe its just the women or something but i prefer etv's weather.

I just get so f irratated with etv and the sports, when clearly its only about soccer.

SABC used to be very much like that, but it has certaintly changed. It does offer a more fair/balanced view these days...

I also prefer e-news to SABC news, there is no real comparison.

Like to watch SkyNews & CNN, they've always got the 'breaking news' thingie covered...

I would think arbitrarily renaming the city of Pretoria to Tshwane for a month and then repeating the 'error' immediately after being alerted to it would be a balanced view don't you.

Also E TV but like others get most of news online. Often feels stale when I watch TV as online is quick and usually heard everything on TV already.

Yes, but there's nothing more frightening than 'breaking news' on SkyNews - especially if you've got a 5.1 surround speaker system + subwoofer... :)

prefer etv as well ... but the news at 10 on sabc3 is also very good ... might just b that they have a good presenter at that time and she generally asks the 'guests' some tough questions and really puts them on the spot .... nice to watch them squirm :)

I cant stand the news@10. I avoid sabc at 10 o'clock. Although i do agree with lucifir, that the presenter is good at what she does. SHe actaully needs to be doing investagitive journalism, (debra patter & carte blanche type stuff) this suits her more than being a news reader.

I would rather watch SABC News, they have more reporters, more offices, and generally have the country, continent, and the world covered better than Etv - in terms of variety of news - not just what's happening in CT and JHB I prefer SABC News - and all my online sources of course

If there is a big breaking news event - Sky News kicks ass - if not it's just filled with boring news of farmers that haven't produced enough and other cr@p

Neither are any of my favourites. Wrto news, Etv has more CT coverage, and sabc has more politics coverage than actual happenings around the country... sports - sabc sport is better imo... and for weather i prefer sabc, the animated weather map that ETV uses is just not for me...

If you compare SABC weather with e-tv weather you get different predictions. So I just play it by ear!

hahaah guys news is so depressing !?!
The less i know about someone being shot in the head or raped etc the more calm il be at dinner time :p seriously i havent watched news properly in like 2-3 years. YES my general knowledge about government and international affairs is appauling but sometimes its too overwhelming. But i generally like ETV news more....

IMHO SABC has more coverage. If i watch e-tv they play like 3 stories, advert, market update, one or two more stories then sports whereas if i switch to SABC 3 at the same time i see they cover more stories.

Just saw that this thread is a couple of years old, but still relevant nevertheless.

eNews > SABC News

Perhaps a poll will be in order here?

Are you insane? SABC sucks but their old-fashioned weather format is the most clear. I am underwhelmed by eTV’s ‘new’ weather format. The old system was much better. It (applies to all weather presentations) is totally unnecessary to have a presenter standing in the way of the weather map, with a well-designed chart (they just repeat what’s on the chart anyway – as if you can’t read). Why can’t they stand in the Atlantic and obscure CT? Are they being bribed?

More specifically:
e-TV are enamoured with their 3D format – it adds nothing new (just gimmicky). Wind speed, direction, rainfall, etc. are much more difficult to discern. What is nice is the time-lapse satellite picture and the animated isobars. However, they are not nice enough to compensate for the overall crappiness. FHM magazine ran a useful column. You nominated a TV personality who deserved a harpoon through the face. I recall Jamie Oliver (the TV cook) was one who achieved this dubious honour. I nominate the e-TV weather presenters for a harpoon through the face.

E-TV weather reporting is really uninformative.

When it's over I am left wondering if I somehow missed the actual weather report, because I have absolutely no clue what the weather prediction is.

I find ETV's news very sensationalistic... and they often miss out on other really important stories. SABC is more neutral, often boring but much more accurate than Etv. The second half of their broacast is usually boring government crap so between the headlines and the sport I usually find something else to do.

I remember once there was a really important thing happening in SA, I missed the story on SABC so I switched to ETV and they had a story about a boxing dog on instead.. LOL really ! ETV can be a bit of a joke sometimes

What really turned me off the SABC was their ******** announcement of the world cup. This happened some time ago (in the optimistic glow of the ‘rainbow nation’ before it got tarnished) but it still rankles. SABC 3 TV gave their regular news bulletin but promised a ‘significant’ announcement later. What was it? This had never happened in my experience before. Were we at war? No, that would have been on the news. Maybe it was a surprise attack? No, that would also have been on the news because they knew by then. I hovered around apprehensively for the announcement. This must be serious. Imagine my anger and rage when some beaming moron breathlessly tells me that SA has won the bid for the SA Soccer World Cup. Wow. Hip hip hooray.

I am more interested in the contents of my cats litter box than soccer. I concede that there are people who don’t share my total apathy, but surely a slot on the news would have been sufficient? Even a top slot – leading the news. There is also a separate sports segment on the news program. Perhaps there as well? When I think of a portion of my life being wasted like that when I could have, more productively, stared into space with a big zero in my head, I feel outraged. I used to be indifferent to soccer, now I am totally alienated. SABC = arrogant ********s.

There is a lot more wrong with it – I have worked extensively in information presentation. However, a technical criticism would be boring for the reader. It smacks of the clueless weather presenters designing the format to maximise their exposure.
