View Full Version : The most beautiful song?
What is the most beautiful song you have ever heard? Please try to restrict your votes to songs composed in the last 50 years. If you are willing, also post your gender and age - I'm curious to know what specific age and gender groups listen to. ;)
If you feel the need, also post your least favourite song, but remember to label it as such. :D
The most beautiful songs, in my opinion are (descending in order, starting with my favourite song):
1. Run to the Water - Live
2. Collide - Howie Day
3. Seize the Day - Avenged Sevenfold
4. One Last Breath - Creed
5. One Year, Six Months - Yellowcard
I am 18 and male.

thread should be called "the most beautiful commercial song?" :)
thread should be called "the most beautiful commercial song?"
I was actually waiting for someone to say that so I could make the point that beautiful songs generally become commercialised because they are beautiful :)
Please post the details of any non-commercial song you may like so I can check it out. I have a compulsive tendancy to buy/download any song someone tells me is good. Even when it is extremely rare, I will spend days or even weeks tracking it down sometimes.

I cry without a sound
And where the truth lies

Around the World - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Bling (Confessions of a King) - The Killers
A Town Called Hypocrisy - Lostprophets
I bet you look good on the dance floor - Arctic Monkeys
Perhaps not what you would describe as 'beautiful' as such, but good music - if I had to give you one single mos beautiful (as such) song then I would take a bit longer to decide :)

Yeah there's some nice one's in there, I'm a big fan of Dire Straits as well.
The Animals - House Of The Rising Sun
I agree that this is an absolute classic. The recently released "The Saints are Coming" by U2 & Greenday (originally performed in the New Orleans Superdome as part of an aid concert for Hurricane Katrina survivors, I believe) uses a part of House of the Rising Sun as an intro - it totally messed up this 60's masterpiece. I can't describe how much I hate U2 and Greenday for doing that. Mind you, I could never stand U2 anyway. I'm very disappointed with Greenday for partaking in the bastardisation of such a great song - they are (were?) one of my favourite bands.

Got some more
The Clash - Train in Vain (Stand By Me)
Offspring - Dirty Magic
Smashing Pumpkins - 1979
Eric Clapton - Wonderful Tonight
Nirvana - Oh, Me
Alice In Chains - Nutshell
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Someday Never Comes
Billy Joel - Piano Man

I got two versions of House Of The Rising Sun. The normal one and one that starts with an electric guitar which is a lot more "raw". I prefer the second version.
I can't stand that lame U2/Greenday song. While I like some of their music I have no time for them otherwise.
Here are a few more of mine:
Road Trippin' - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Higher - Creed (overplayed to death, but still a brilliant song)
Wonderwoorde - Melktert Kommissie
My Engel - Melktert Kommissie
My Immortal (Band/Music Video Version) - Evanescence
Breathe No More (Live in Paris during "Anywhere But Home" tour) - Evanescence
Anywhere - Evanescence
Iris – Goo Goo Dolls
Mr Jones – Counting Crows
Wonderful World – Louis Armstrong
Crazy – Patsy Cline
Unchained Melody – The Righteous Brothers
Have You Ever Seen the Rain – Creedence Clearwater Revival
Vindicated – Dashboard Confessional
Heaven – Bryan Adams (later somewhat screwed up by DJ Sammy, IMO)
Save Tonight – Eagle-Eye Cherry
Where’d You Go - Fort Minor feat. Holly Brook & Jonah Matranga
A Million Lights – Tree63
Superman – Five For Fighting
Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) – Green Day
Hear You Me – Jimmy Eat World
Engel – Karen Zoid
Deurmekaar – Karen Zoid

Looking For Today - Black Sabbath, in fact the whole Sabbath Bloody Sabbath album.
Search it on LimeWire - you're bound to find at least some of the tracks. I won't comment on Black Sabbath :(
I laugh when some people my age see my music collection. They'll look through and find CCR, Police, Clash, Billy Joel, The Animals I can go on and on amongst all my later harder stuff and they'll have this puzzled look on their face. Normaly they'll say something like " dude, my dad listens to this" at which I'll reply "your dad's got a good taste in music"

Coldplay - ClocksI dislike Coldplay intensely. Especially that song. Not only are the songs monotonous, but the lyrics are completely nonsensical:
Lights go out and I can't be saved
Tides that I tried to swim against
You've put me down upon my knees
Oh I beg, I beg and plead (singing)
Come out of things unsaid, shoot an apple of my head (and a)
Trouble that can't be named, tigers waiting to be tamed (singing)
You are, you are
Confusion never stops, closing walls and ticking clocks (gonna)
Come back and take you home, I could not stop, that you now know (singing)
Come out upon my seas, curse missed opportunities (am I)
A part of the cure, or am I part of the disease (singing)
What is Mr. Chris Martin trying to tell us here?

Cradle of Filth - Nymphetamine (Fix)
I wouldn't normally consider anything by Cradle "beautiful" (oh, except Her Ghost in the Fog) but I guess the part where the chick sings in this song is nice :)
I cant really think of many that I remember forever but atm, pretty much the whole of Blind Guardians new CD is amazing, beautiful vocals I guess.

What ??!! there is a deftones version, dang should find it somewhere, deftones are the only nu-metal band I take seriously

Blind Guardian is very nice, but I prefer Rhapsody. Another cool band is Therion, and "Demons and Wizards".

Can't say i am a big fan of Coldplay as a whole [only 1 song per album mainly] , but that song does it for me. HOWEVER, try the following [especially if the lyrics irks you]
String Quartet playing Coldplay and Linkin Park
and
Apocalyptica playing Metallica
Both groups are instrumental, Apocalyptica is doing some stuff with cellos you don't normally hear [or thought can be done] ...try Sepultura for one ;)
Blind Guardian is very nice, but I prefer Rhapsody. Another cool band is Therion, and "Demons and Wizards".
Are all of these fantasy metal bands? A friend of mine recommended Blind Guardian, but I'm not sure whether I'd like it. My only exposure to fantasy metal has been Nightwish, which I despise.
NOTE TO MODS: Could you please change the title of this thread to something more general (e.g. MyADSL Music Thread), since the discussion has long since gone off-topic. I've tried to change it myself by editing the title of the first post, but that didn't accomplish what I wanted.

Blind Guardian and Rhapsody is yes. But i wouldn't say they are too close to Nightwish in terms of what they sound like. I for one aren't a major fan of Blind Guardian but love Nightwish. Main diff, Nightwish = operaic female vocals, where Blind Guardian is almost Iron Maiden like vocals [high pitched/hoarse male] with the fantasy power metal ...huge diff. I'd also say Nightwish is more Goth Metal [i.e. Lacuna Coil and whatever Evanescence is trying to be ;) ] Blind Guardian is more Power Metal [Hammerfall/Elegy/Sonata Arctica/Rhapsody/Edguy].
Rhapsody i like, very fast power metal (and i mean super fast drumming kinda stuff). Their vocalist went solo at some stage [ Luca Turilli ] and he's doing an even better job than Rhapsody ;)
Therion is on their own mission and change every album. One album it's all nu-agy Egyptian Myths kind of stuff with choirs and orchestras, next they are hardcore metal with beauty & beast vocals [screaming male vs soothing female] . They are definitely an acquired taste i would say, definitely worth checking out though....and one thing is for sure, very hard to place them in a specific genre.
"Demons and Wizards" is basically members of different bands jamming together [blind guardian + Iced earth methinks] . If you know Blind Guardian you'll quickly notice it's the same vocalist. I like Demons&Wizards more than Blind Guardian, not sure exactly why, i think Iced Earth brings a heavier sound to the party.
Anyhow Sonata Arctica is another band i'd like to add to the whole Blind Guardian/Demons & Wizards/Rhapsody genre ;). They're one of my fav male vocal power metal bands.

here are the lyrics to my fav song
Iris
Verse 1
And I'd give up forever to touch you
Cause I know that you feel me somehow
You're the closest to heaven that I'll ever be
And I don't want to go home right now
Verse 2
And all I can taste is this moment
And all I can breathe is your life
Cause sooner or later it's over
I just don't want to miss you tonight
Chorus
And I don't want the world to see me
Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am
Verse 3
And you can't fight the tears that ain't coming
Or the moment of truth in your lies
When everything seems like the movies
Yeah you bleed just to know your alive
Chorus
And I don't want the world to see me
Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am
Chorus
I don't want the world to see me
Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am
My favourite lyrics (or the first I really connected with):
Radiohead - Creep
When you were here before
Couldn't look you in the eye
You're just like an angel
Your skin makes me cry
You float like a feather
In a beautiful world
I wish I was special
You're so ****ing special
But I 'm a creep
I 'm a weirdo
What the hell am I doing here?
I don't belong here
I don't care if it hurts
I want to have control
I want a perfect body
I want a perfect soul
I want you to notice
When I'm not around
You're so ****ing special
I wish I was special
But I'm a creep
I'm a weirdo
What the hell am I doing here?
I don't belong here
She's running out again
She's running out
She run, run, run run
Run
Whatever makes you happy
Whatever you want
You're so ****ing special
I wish I was special
But I'm a creep
I'm a weirdo
What the hell am I doing here?
I don't belong here
I don't belong here.
Hmm, okay, since everyone is posting lyrics, I feel obliged to do they same. This is my favourite song (yes I know everyone knows the words, but everyone knows the words to Iris too ;) ):
Run to the Water by LIVE:
Oh desert speak to my heart
Oh woman of the earth
Maker of children who weep for love
Maker of this birth
‘Till your deepest secrets are known to me
I will not be moved
I will not be moved
Don’t try to find the answer
When there ain’t no question here
Brother let your heart be wounded
And give no mercy to your fear
Adam and Eve live down the street from me
Babylon is every town
It’s as crazy as its ever been
Love’s a stranger all around
In a moment we lost our minds here
And lay our spirit down
Today we lived a thousand years
All we have is now
Run to the water
And find me there
Burnt to the core but not broken
Well cut through the madness
Of these streets below the moon
These streets below the moon
And I will never leave you
‘Till we can say,
This world was just a dream
We were sleepin’ now we are awake
‘Till we can say
In a moment we lost our minds here
And dreamt the world was round
A million mile fall from grace
Thank God we missed the ground
Run to the water
And find me there
Burnt to the core but not broken
Well cut through the madness
Of these streets below the moon
With a nuclear fire of love in our hearts
Yeah, I can see it now, Lord
Out beyond all the breakin’ of waves
And the tribulation
Its a place and the home of ascended souls
Who swam out there in love!
Run to the water
And find me there
Burnt to the core but not broken
Well cut through the madness
Of these streets below the moon
With a nuclear fire of love in our hearts
Rest easy baby, rest easy
And recognize it all as light and rainbows
Smashed to smithereens and be happy
Run to the water (and find me there)
Run to the water
justinct
