Hey

Sorry if this has been dealt with before. I did try to search the forums for "lag", "latency" and "slow" but couldn't find anything useful hence my posting.

I've been experiencing incredibly high latency since the quake (in Taiwan) earlier this week. The SAIX noticeboard says that they are waiting on their Internation Provider to sort out the problem. Am I to believe thwn that all our International traffic is routed via Asia? Or does the cable going down between New York and Hong Kong mess SAIX up so badly that GW can't run properly? I'm being specific about GW as there seems to be no problem with browsing at all.

I've tested this on two seperate ADSL 384kbps accounts in two different locations (in Pretoria). One in Moreleta Park, the other in Centurion. The one uses TelkomInternet and the other SAOL. Both run on SAIX, of course.

Is anyone else out there (in South Africa, using TelkomInternet or SAOL or any other SAIX provider for that matter) experiencing the same problem?

I have also noticed some lag now and then, not a lot though and nothing really bad or causing me to disconnect or anything. Also on SAIX 384 in CT.
It is quite a substantial break they are experiencing and it has been ongoing for a couple of days already.
Different links to Hong Kong and New York are affected.
Some ISP's may reroute traffic to counter for this but not all have the power to do this, mostly just the major ISP's.
There are still links to EU (another landing spot) that are unaffected by this break.

512kb in Cape Town... pings up around the 1000-2000 mark for most of the time I'm online.

I have noticed alot of lag and latency as well. This started around the start of the holidays though. Havent noticed any significant change since the quake.

That latency is seriously high @ aCe, mine averages between 350-550.

AFAIK the international problems still have not being resolved (since 26th December)

lilDeath you are obviously on an unshaped account and the others are not.

oh, I noticed I didn't post it previously but for those that want to know ...
I am on a normal shaped account, not unshaped or anything like that.

I had uber lag the other night, huge spikes and was complaining the entire time. Then I realised my torrents were running to the max, I blushed, turned them off and it has been fine since.

lol, that's one thing they are great at, the bandwidth utilization, I often play with mail open, scans running in the background, downloads in the background and the game barely complains...

ye, got a bit of lag here and there as well, very minimal, over the weekend, but then there were international breaks at the time so that was to be expected.

I notice I get lag when I browse Porn? Does it mean I have to stop or does it simply mean I have to install a second line?!?

Or instead of a 2nd line, go for a second monitor and multi-task ;)

Pity GW is not a point and click though, you might need to find some one who will help you to multi task.

I still get ping times of 2000-4000ms during the game. Not nice at all. This seems to be sporadic though, and not fixed to certain times.

Our iBurst guildies have been hating life lately. It has been barely playable.

This past weekend, latency for me has also gone into the red a couple of times for me. The previous weekend it was almost permanently green.
Nothing as high as 2000 though, that is just crazy...
you must be bouncing all over the place! :(

Fracking Telkom and their shyte!

Just tried to play again. Red all the way, and at the end couldn't connect to the servers anymore :-(

My ping is generally between 500 and 800 on iburst. Is it substantially better on SAIX?

Odd, I usualy have an ave ping of around 500 on SAIX, 512 dsl. Other guildies who are on iBurst usually have 350 odd and green. I wonder how much location in SA comes into play here.

So Iburst has a better ping than ADSL? Well I never....

I have had pings of below 500, however I would not say it is the norm.

Well in the case of our Jhb guildies this is def the case (I could just have a dodgy line).

I have read that there is higher latency in Dbn and Cpt than Jhb for Iburst. Maybe explains that side of it. Still surprised that ADSL has higher pings though - can anyone else confirm this?

I hav'nt had any problems, maybe some lag in towns and outposts when a lot of people are around but overall haven't noticed anything serious.

My capped 384 ADSL in CT is performing pretty good, in the green quite a few times, i.e. <250ms
