Cant wait for Australia vs SA
I think i'm correct in saying that its top2 from each group that go through, so in that case it will be OZ & SA that will go through from group 1.
Maybe SA & OZ will meet up again at a later stage....

OK, then I hope that South Africa win both encounters....remember, OZ is still trying to forget about that match against SA, in which they posted the highest score in One Day cricket - and South Africa beat them in the end. :)

Cricket was the true winner of that high scoring game sa & Oz. Although well done to SA for winning the game.

Not sure, in '99 we could have guaranteed it. Nowadays SA tends to be much more unpredictable when it comes to guaranteeing results. Although we haven't lost to Bangladesh yet, unlike some other team we know of *cough*

The latest report about the pitches in the west indies suggest that they'll be suitable for a 4 pronged pace attack. Grounds are lush whilst the pitches, seem to be hard.
Still awhile to go before WC, but if you want a read....

I reckon SA will get to the finals for the first time :P question is tho, will we win? i think it will be better if the 1st guaranteed game between SA and AUS, the aussies win semi easily.. that will make our boys determined to beat them ;) [pressure will make us perform, and aussies might take it fore granted.] Don't forget, SA cricket team seems to prefer the underdog tag.
Still.. I reckon Pakistan might will be a strong team [batting wise esp when the get off to a good start] as well as West Indies tho i think the curse of hosting will remain.

Ireland moving along nicely @ 102/4 after 32.... so will be just a tad embarrassing. Maybe it's a good thing though if we loose. Everyone will write SA off and there will be a bit less pressure on the boys.

Hosts humbled.
Brian Lara is hoping the West Indies' embarrassing defeat to India will be the World Cup wake-up call his side needs.
The tournament hosts were thrashed by nine wickets yesterday after being skittled for just 85 in their final dress rehearsal before Tuesday's Group D opener against Pakistan.
Lara issued a strong rebuke to his side about the way they keep shooting themselves in the foot.
"You must give India credit because they put the ball in the right areas and they reaped the rewards for it," he said.
"We have to focus now on what we have to do, and there is a situation which I think is a bit chronic. We are prone to such collapses as we saw in this match.
"We have to refresh our memories now about how we got ourselves out of this situation the last time and do it.
"I wouldn't say we are down in the dumps yet because the tournament hasn't started but, if there was a good time for such a performance to take place, it's good that it happened before the tournament started. I think that is the positive we can take from it.
"I think we all know what we have to do to avoid such a situation again."
Lara believes his players have got to become more aware of match situations and adjust accordingly.
"The guys need to understand their roles," he said.
"There are two roles in a one-day international. If your team is doing well, you have to keep the momentum going but, if they are in a bad situation, you have to consolidate and bat out the 50 overs.
"We don't seem to be able to get the second part right when we are under pressure and this has to change."
India captain Rahul Dravid was playing down expectations of his side, saying: "This win doesn't mean that we will turn up next time and win though.
"Every game of one-day cricket is different. West Indies are a very good team, and I am sure that they will rebound, since they play well at home and have beaten us consistently here.
"We see this victory as a good boost of confidence for us leading into the main competition."
Dravid claims the match emphasised the need for his side to be more flexible, since it was the fast bowlers who did the job for them.
"I do not think you can enter a World Cup with only one plan and every time you are going to use this one plan," he said.
"I think it has to vary and you will see that teams will have to adapt to the different conditions and be flexible according to the situation.
"We hope to do this and we think we have the players that can do it.
"We have an idea in our minds about the kind of combinations we want to play, and the players we want to pick, but there are too many variables, so only time will tell."
India have been drawn with Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Bermuda in World Group B to be played in Trinidad.
West Indies tackle Pakistan, Zimbabwe, and Ireland in Group D to be contested at Sabina Park in the Jamaica capital, Kingston.

From what i hear - sa will be playing 3 matches in Granada, whose pitch was totally funded by the indian government. Now, sa will apparently be playing sub-continent teams their.SA will struggle if it turns out to be a 'sub-continent' pitch as SA dont have the bowlers for that..... more from the 'what could happen' column soon.

I've been hearing/reading 2 thoughts - 1 is that some of the pitches are going to be sub-continent like, and the other is that know one knows how the hell they pitches are going to be......
Shall wait and see, but this can really effect teams that have only been preparing for belter pitches, and what if pitches are much different.
Anyway, we shall wait with keen interest...
The current spread is - West Indies/Pakistan 5-15.

I'd buy WI supremacy at R10 a point! (Runs = 1 point, Wickets = 10 points)

Umar Gul to Gayle, OUT, Gayle on his way! Umar Gul banged one in a little short, the ball left Gayle off the seam, he nibbled at it and Kamran Akmal took a big step to his left to hold a catch at stomach height. That's an identical dismissal to the way Gayle fell in the warm-up match against India last week. (http://content-rsa.cricinfo.com/wc2007/engine/current/match/247457.html)

Hehe, a purest are we? ;)
I take it you don't love the pro20 then?
I get what you are saying. But I prefer small fields with big scores than playing games on fields like in Sydney and the other Aussie Rules fields they use where you can often run 3 and even run 4!

This is true. Setting someone like Bermuda a target of like 450 and successfully chasing 438 against the best team in the world are two different things :)

Well I prefer an even contest between bat and ball - makes for closer finishes. Pro20 isn't the same as an ODI, it's two different games just as ODI's are different from tests.
The Aussie grounds are about the same size as ours, they just tend to keep the ropes as close to the fence as possible, in the past they never even had ropes. When you reduce the size of the playing field, you automatically make it one-sided towards the batsmen. That's for Pro20, not ODI's. Think about it - if this trend continues then which kid in their right mind would aspire to be a world class bowler?

Computer spot on with WI, Pak prediction
Who says cricket matches are unpredictable? A business solutions company in Mumbai has devised a computer model that forecasts cricket scores with apparently astounding success.
The company, Fractal Analytics, scored a major hit by predicting West Indies' underdog victory over Pakistan in the opening game of the World Cup on Tuesday.
Amazingly, it even forecast the exact scores of rival captains Brian Lara of the West Indies and Inzamam-ul-Haq of Pakistan.
Tuesday morning's edition of the Mumbai-based Daily News and Analysis newspaper carried the predictions, based on what what the company said was scientific analysis of players' past performances.
The forecast said: "West Indies will win in a tight finish and will put up a low score if they bat first."
The West Indies, batting first, managed a moderate 241-9 after being 183-6 at one stage.
Pakistan lost the game by 54 runs but were cruising at 99-3 and fought until the end through Shoaib Malik's aggressive 62.
The prediction correctly said Lara would make 37 and Inzamam 36.
Fractal Analytics, which specialises in predictive analysis of customer behaviour for clients such as Visa and Citibank, devised the model to forecast cricket results just for fun.
"We started this a few months back and found that the predictions actually came out true," Mukesh Budania, a consultant with the firm, told AFP by telephone from Mumbai.
"So we decided to be bold and give our predictions to a newspaper a day before the match.
"I can tell you the whole team in the office was jumping with joy last night when Lara got out for 37 and Inzamam for 36."
The model is based on the theory that the outcome of every game and the performance of every player depends, to a degree, on what the player or the team has done in the past.
To predict which team will win a particular match, the statistics of all one-day internationals played since 1996 are looked at to identify factors that have the maximum impact on the outcome of the match.
Factors found to be relevant include the relative forms of the teams, their recent past record and their performances against each other.
Based on an in-depth analysis of these factors, the model is apparently able to predict not just the result, but individual scores and the winning margin as well.
Budania claims to have correctly predicted results of 70 percent of the matches analysed so far, including two of the three upset win by New Zealand over Australia last month.
Testing the model on results of the last World Cup in South Africa in 2003, the model had a success rate of 75 per cent, he said.
To gauge how a batsman will perform, the model takes into account his performance in the last few matches and looks at which other stages in his playing career the player exhibited similar form.
This data is used to predict the score of the batsman. Other factors like the opposition and the importance of the match are used to refine the predictions.
The big question is who will win the World Cup -- but sadly Budania says it is too early for the computer to tell.
Its next prediction will be for the England-New Zealand match on March 16, which will be published before the game in the DNA newspaper.
"So far we are doing it just for fun, but if the model works we may even think of marketing it in future," he said.
Though it was unclear who would benefit from the model -- fans, or bookmakers.

It would certainly be the right time to do it. I'm hoping our batsmen get some good time at the crease, and make the most of it. Our bowlers are in the zone, pretty much - it's the batting that worries me.

16-03-2007, 02:10 PM
The ICC has already decided to screw us with the scheduling for the Super 8s. Never mind if we beat Aus or not, they've decided that SA will be A2, and have to play India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan on the spin friendly pitch in Guyana. Read a full explanation here (http://pienkzuit.wordpress.com/2007/03/16/icc-komplot/) (in Afrikaans though).
From the ICC website (the page this was on has since disappeared. I smell a conspiracy):
“Team names for the Super Eight stage are indicative based on the top two teams from the Group Stage qualifying. If these two teams do qualify they will be seeded in position 1 or 2 as specified regardless of whether they finish first or second in their group. For example, if South Africa wins Group A and Australia comes second, for the purposes of the Super Eights, South Africa will still be A2 and Australia will be A1.“
Thats crap but SA are in the zone and the Super 8s is gonna be the time that we perform well under pressure and finally kill that label of "chokers". So doesn't really matter what cards we've been dealt for Super 8s, we gotta get over it and raise our game.

It says that because it's a link to the ICC site on the internet archive. They've removed the page from their site. I mailed Supersport, and they've admitted that it looks like it's true. The scam is on the ICC's side unfortunately. They're screwing us, and when everyone wakes up to the fact it will be too late to do anything about it. We have to beat Aus now, just to show them up.

Now we are yes, but when the seeding was done (12 months ago) we where number 5. That's why we ended up with Aus in the same group. The same ranking will therefore be applied to Super 8 games.

Hello! Welcome to South Africa v Netherlands game. Some bad news right away. Rain delays start. Torrential overnight rain in St Kitts had left a sodden outfield at Warner Park and mopping operations are on.
Andrew Miller, our man at the ground spoke to Andy Atkinson, the ICC Grounds Consultant. "Realistically we are looking at an 11.00 start time at the earliest [play was scheduled to get underway at 9.30 local time]. We are working with limited equipment, and it also depends on the willingness of the teams to play.
"South Africa want to get started," Atkinson added, "but already one or two of the Dutch have been looking a bit uncertainly at the conditions. They know their gameplan, and they know that with two wash-outs, they'd only need to beat Scotland to qualify for the next round." Carnage.. with a capitol 'C'
Scary thing for aussies to think of is this.. we reached 353/3 in 40overs compared to their 50ov;s faced.. 18 sixes which is most in a world cup game which was.. a shortened game AND 4 runs scored in first 5 ov's

ROFLMAO @ Cricinfo's commentary!! :D
9.1 van Bunge to Gibbs, SIX, Violence! Gibbs charged down the track and hoicked it over long on.
29.2 van Bunge to Gibbs, SIX, Murder! Floated on the leg and middle stump line and Gibbs sends it soaring over long-off.
29.3 van Bunge to Gibbs, SIX, Carnage! Flatter one this time but it makes no difference to Gibbs. He just stands there and delivers. This one also has been sucked over long off
29.4 van Bunge to Gibbs, SIX, Wah Wah! Low full toss and guess where this went Yep. A slap slog and it went over deep midwicket! He is going to go for 6 sixes in this over!
29.5 van Bunge to Gibbs, SIX, Short in length, on the off stump line and Gibbs rocks back and swat-pulls it over wide long off. SImply amazing. What a batsman. This is pure violence!
29.6 van Bunge to Gibbs, SIX, He has done it! One-day record. No one has hit six sixes in a row. GIbbs stands alone in that zone. And the minnow bashing continues! Full and outside off and bludgeoned over deep midwicket

Does anyone know of any online radio stations where one can listen to the cricket live? Or free video streaming?
You could try Radio 2000 - frq - 100.2
Not aware of any Free Video streaming - you could try the following and see if any available:

That would have then amounted to 499 if a 50 over game. I guess these 5 overs are the Dutch's Head start - Not.:)

Piffle on the Kiwi's...
Our attention is firmly on the more important match :)
Another performance like this against Scotland and we'll have some lekker practice before knocking the Aussies over next week. Only thing about today is I feel bad for AB, he didn't get to stick his finger in the runs pie but hey he'll do better against the Scots.

I would like to take this oppurtunity to let you all know that gibbs and Kallis have peaked already. After last nights match and all those sixes, one feels that they have used all there energy in the wrong game.
Pity that, cause they will need some that for more important games coming up. Gibbs, whom now thinks he has conquered the earth will probably take time out to get into the swing of things and chill out on some of the local dagga. It will bring back fond memories.
I'm looking forward to this fridays game, but i think whats more important, is not so much this game, but rather the games in the later stages, as both SA & OZ will go through.
Anyway cheers to pot smoking and sixes in the Windies.

No, used up all their energy? Never the SA boys can do this stuff with easy. Else if they so unfit, why even bother with warmup matches?
Gibbs was real calm and down to earth the both times they interviewed him. Hopefully not this or anything else  goes to his head!
The SA team will be on top next weekend! :D
