that's for sure. anyone for Ford Ka? Personally I think they should add another K to the end of Ka...
Nah not a fan of Fords, although they have stepped up their game since those old Mondeo's and Fiesta's.
They still suck IMO, and still cant stand up to the German dominance!
They decently priced though with lots features.

i drove one and i drove alot of other cars... and the value for money question ... no doubt the ST is a bargain ... built in th uk .. good standard spec. jus amazing ... can get a good discount on one also .... my buddies ordered a ST 3 door with sunroof ... worked out to R225k ... just ask the dealer for a discount and they will give you one ...
EDIT: Find an indian dealer they tend to give you the best discounts ... seriously :)

A mate of mine drives one... OMG !!!!
I hated Ford as from the days of the Capri, XR3 Escort etc.
Those cars where rubbish. The tech. was out dated etc. Then you also get your FORD fanatics... I think it's a mater of taste. I have owned a Ford Explorer, Import. No issues @ all since then my perseption has changed.. But only on the newer versions of FORD. Anything after 2000. But if I can't buy an ST I won't bother.
For no specific reason Ford just doesn't appeal to me, except for the Mustang series, but they're not available in South Africa. I wouldn't ever consider buying one. I'd rather buy a VW or a BMW, depending on which price range I am considering.

Somehow I cannot imagine a Ford bakkie doing more than 1 000 000 km like a Toyota 2.4D
I also think the engines of the new Toyota bakkies are crap, the ol' 2.4D can go forever.
IMO any Ford can do about 50 000km then it must go to the scrap yard.

That's my one remaining reservation with Ford. I had the same concern regarding VW until the Golf IV. I'm not the kind of guy who changes cars every 3 years so longevity is very important. I guess I'll know in 5 or 6 years time.

BUT!! In real life now, we tried it, 2 Gtis(1 DSG) 1 ST, 1 new 330.
The ST came last we had about 30 runs up down, perfect racing conditons for turbo cars, ice cold air just after the rains in November.

JK8, what you should try next time is swapping drivers. That should eliminate any skill advantage once the driver has adjusted to the handling of the different car. I've managed to beat BMW 320s on winding roads with a Honda Ballade 150i purely because the other driver has no idea how to drive.

We did! Except with the BM.
And beat the average driver in a BM on winding road is understandable, I wouldnt push a BM hard on a winding road, if the back steps out you dead! (exageration)

ST is quicker ... trust me ... stock vs stock ... a chipped GTI or ST gives an E46 M a run for its money ... friend had both the GTI and ST ... ST def quicker ... and yes a car with 1500km on the motor is tight ... i remember when my buddy bought his M3 and we raced i would pull him like 7 cars all the way to limiter ... and that is M3 vs M3 ... but after the motor was run in i could not pull like that again... cars were equal ... and yes alot of people dont know how to drive these cars ... best rev to change at etc etc etc

I drive a RunX RSi...not as fast as these chaps but the engine and gearbox on those cars only break in from 5000kms. The difference is huge. CAR Magazine did it and on an RSi with 1000kms on the clock they got just less than 9.5 secs and after 5000kms they got 7.72....but that was many editions ago...in 2003 some time.

Personally, I love the Focus and Fiesta ST. But what do you guys think of all the other cars Ford has to offer?
I posted this in my blog the other day:
VW, Ford, and image
I visited a couple of VW dealerships and a few Ford dealerships last week in my quest for touch-up paint, and I was struck by some of the differences between the VW and Ford dealerships.
First was the service centre. At the VW dealers, the drop-off area for your car service was either part of the new car sales area, or very nearby, and done with the same smart décor. The Ford dealerships, by contrast, had the service area separate, sometimes even completely around the block. The Ford areas usually had reasonable seating and so forth, but the décor was not nearly as upmarket as the rest of the dealership.
Then there were display cabinets. At the VW dealerships I saw glass cabinets containing samples of things you could buy: caps, T-shirts, fancy key-rings, VW-branded pens, Maglites, and other smart-looking nicknacks and lifestyle accessories. There were no such things at the Ford dealerships, except in the parts departments, where a couple had rather down-market cabinets bearing caps, car wash kits, and parts samples. Ford may not sell touch-up paint (which I find near-incomprehensible from a product support point of view), but they do sell some nice accessories, like Mondeo-branded picnic baskets, roof-racks, floor mats, and so forth. It's a pity that they're almost certainly not in stock, they're not on display, and you have to ask to see an accessories catalogue to see what's available.
Now, I can't speak for other brands, but it seems to me that Ford's image projection and marketing are woefully deficient. VW are fostering pride not only in the cars, but in the whole VW brand, while Ford owners may have pride in the capability of their cars, but not in the image of the brand, per se. Maybe this is one of the reasons that VW have such a strong brand in South Africa.
Such a difference could be made if dealers improved brand image. it doesn't need to be big stuff. It could be little things, like having for sale smart-looking accessories, like branded Maglites, coffee mugs, jackets, penknives, and that sort of thing. Little gifts could make a huge difference to image too: things like getting a free Ford-branded coffee mug when you have your car serviced, or a free Ford-branded Swiss Army knife when you buy a new car from Ford. A dealer could, when you buy a car, include a colour catalogue of accessories you can buy for the car; not only would it make them money, but it would give the customer an image of their car as the centre of a lifestyle product.
Why don't the manufacturers' marketing departments see this sort of thing?
Fords of recent years have been much better. Materials and build quality have improved vastly from the Sierras and Escorts of the 1990s, and handling is generally top notch, as acknowledged by motoring reviews. As I mention above, though, Ford has an image problem in SA, and I think a lot of it is due to a below-standard dealer network.
I have a Mondeo, and it's a stunning car. Reliable, cheap parts, decent performance, excellent handling, well-built, and it has a smorgasbord of features, like leather seats, power driver's seat, front and side airbags, ABS, ESP, climate control, cruise control, etc etc. Really good value for money. My previous car was a 1999 Mondeo (the previous model), and while the interior quality was not as good as the new model, it was totally competent and reliable. I traded it in at 207000km.

I am not a ford fan though (Found on the Rubbish Dump) and their current offering in the lowe end of the market is a joke.... as somebody said, another K is needed.
The Ka is actually a nice little vehicle. With wheels on the corners, it has nice handling, and is really nippy. And you get power steering, ABS, airbag and CD player standard, and on the middle option, you get aircon too. The engine is the reliable 1.3 Rocam. Styling may not be to your tastes, but there's not much else better in that end of the market.

As to the question of purchasing a Ford, I definitely would. Own a Mazda myself and Porters will give me a goode trade-in for it. Plus, Fiesta and Focus are very reasonably priced. Another brownie point for Ford and Mazda, of most of the popular marques, their product and service sucks the least.

Adam, Porsche isn't a VW brand. In fact Porsche owns 20-something % of VW.
Also you forgot to mention on the VW side - Citi R: not sweeeeet.

Lol you got Ford, MG(bankrupt company), Jaguar and Range Rover VS Buggatti, Lambo, Bentley, Audi and VW?
Let's see who's still standing on your list:
Bugatti - Check :)
Lambo - Check :)
Bentley - Chrysler managed to knock off their product with the 300C; also Bentley and Rolls Royce look too much alike - more knock-offs ? hmmmm
VW - unreliable products and even worse service, and that's just local. Of late, there's been a lot of complaints about their products, especially their turbo-diesel offerings; I happen to know of quite a few people who've had problems with brand new VW TDI's
Audi - since they're wholly-owned by VW, you can probably expect the same dismal products and services as VW, especially since Audi uses the same VW engines

"...taking 7.1 seconds to reach 100km/h. That's nowhere near the 5.6 claimed by Jaguar and too slow to worry a manual BMW M5, which really does do 0-100km/h in 5.6..."
i remembered that when i had the M ... so thats why for me there aint a Jag worth remembering ....

VW/Porsche and AUdi ... they the same in my opinion ... esp the relationship between Audi and Porsche ... so will keep it under VW ...
I was thinking of it as cars from the same stable ...

correction, VW uses some of Audi motors, Audi are fully imported, whereas the VW is assembled locally (that includes engine components).
Audi - yep i agree crap service, i disagree in the reliability comment though.

LOL ... true .. saw that Top Gear Episode which can be found on You Tube against the plane ... wow!!!
Saw it on BBC world sunday, but to be honest, wasn't much of a race lol, they let Clarkson in the Veyron win by delaying for 2 hours with inspection etc, then decide on taking the scenic route along the med coast, and then James May not being able to fly in evening lol, they knew we all wanted the Veyron to win
Lol wait wait wait...
Who uses whos engines?
Audi uses VW engines not the other way around!
Eg, Gti engine is the same in a 2.0T A3 not the other way around, The New R32 engine is the same in the 3.2 Quattro A3, the Toureg 3.2 the Passat and now the Baby Porsche Cayenne.
Audi and Porsche have been best friends for years!! Look at the Audi RS2 it has original Porsche brake calipers and the mirrors, and the RS2 was a production car.
And just to add to Adamr statement..
On the VW side we have ....
Lambo Gallardo = sweeeet!!!
Lambo Murcielago = sweeeeet!!!
SEAT ... mmm i dunno .... might have the mechanics of a GTi but def not the looks
Audi RS4 ... sweeet!!
You forgot the RS3, the RS6 and the ultimate RS8(with the Lambo Gallardo engine)
Porsche 997 Turbo ... sweeet!!!
GTi ... sweeeet!!! + R32 and later the 300kw R GTi!
Bugatti ... sweeet!!!! 0-100 2.9 sec - enough said!!
Ford side we have:
Aston DBS (Casino Royale one)= sweeeet!
Ford GT ...... mmmm i dunno ... dont like the interior considering you paying millions for the car
Focus ST ... sweeet!!!!
Jag ... nooit ... will not buy a jag ... cant think of a nice model in the Jag range
Range Rover Sport ... sweeet!!!
MG ... nooit!!!
Volvo ... the S40 drop is very pretty and the T5 is a T5 ... sweeet!!!
so i guess VW wins ...

Nah not a fan of Fords, although they have stepped up their game since those old Mondeo's and Fiesta's.
They still suck IMO, and still cant stand up to the German dominance!
They decently priced though with lots features.
the ford fiesta and focus are designed and manufactured in Germany.
and bear in mind bmw are bavarian crap. :D

JK8, what you should try next time is swapping drivers. That should eliminate any skill advantage once the driver has adjusted to the handling of the different car. I've managed to beat BMW 320s on winding roads with a Honda Ballade 150i purely because the other driver has no idea how to drive.
it is all about the driver.
the fiesta and focus are well known for their handling ability.
in fact even the ford ka has great handling.
although build qaulity of the fiesta needs some more tweaking IMHO.
Focus vs GTi - I think they both awesome cars.
Polo GTi anyone heard anything?

well i will admit the m3 was cool.
but yeah i dont really enjoy BMW design at all. They beginning to smack of the Nokia type model frenzy.
and seriously i was next to a series 1 bmw this morning and dont you guys think it is a very feminine/gay type of car?
i dunno - just seems wrong when you see a dude it in it.

Where was that test done? The Jags had severe problems with reviews done in SA, because the supercharged engines did not like SA's 93 octane fuel much, even though they were detuned.

Don't forget the other Ford brands: Mercury and Lincoln.

So the new Volvo hatch will have the ST engine? 2.5 T5?
More Gti competition.
This markets getting interesting, VW golf6 might have to 2.5 turbo as well.
I dont think it will be long till we see sub 5 or sub 4 second hatches on our roads!:)
R32 + turbo please VW!:D

Ofcourse it is and always has been. Where you living guy. All the manufacturers want to beat the benchmarks!
If you dont know who the mains one are, its Gti in the hatchback segment and the M3 in the sedan segment, but its German cars in general!;)
You ever noticed Car magazine headlines, Gti contender or M3 Eater.

IMHO, a standard/benchmark cannot be set by one model; even better said, one "good" model doesn't make for a good manufacturer/brand.
Secondly, your average joe public does not drive / cannot afford a M3 or a GTI, so they don't benchmark marques on models that they DON'T drive.
Thirdly, CAR magazine reviews/tests are written by motoring journalists and journalists are just people after all; yes, they back up their reviews with technical facts but at the end of the day, their bias does come through.
Finally, I love German cars as much as the next person but if SA manufacturers/dealers can't get it right in terms of product support, you won't see me throwing money at them.

Ford is pretty good, especially since they are no longer under the dark cloud called SAMCOR. Most of the Fords in SA are from Ford Europe which is based in Cologne, Germany and those guys know a thing or two about making cars.
