Nice article on Apple and FairPlay but what interested me the most is
But when the same tracks are sold by the iTunes Music Store, Apple insists on attaching FairPlay copy protection that limits their use to only one portable player, the iPod. Terry McBride, Nettwerk’s chief executive, said that the artists initially required Apple to use copy protection, but that this was no longer the case. At this point, he said, copy protection serves only Apple’s interests .

Josh Bernoff, a principal analyst at Forrester Research, agreed, saying copy protection “just locks people into Apple.” He said he had recently asked Apple when the company would remove copy protection and was told, “We see no need to do so.” (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/14/business/yourmoney/14digi.html?_r=1&ref=technology&pagewanted=all)So it would seem that Apple's continuing use of fairplay is just a means of locking in customers. Hopefully the courts will put a stop to this sooner rather than later.

Theres tons of drm hacks out there, im sure whatever locks they want to put on it will have an unlock code.

Same with the PS3, the new blu ray discs will have serial code activation, that means no lending or reselling without that code.

Just don't buy DRM music. Buy the CD and rip it. Or better yet dl it.
iPhone will still play mp3s.

Buy the CD and rip it.

Problem is that if a CD has a couple of tracks on that you like, you have to fork out alot of cash for the whole CD, only for those few tracks. I buy from iTunes, and sync it to two iPods. I don't need anything more than be able to do that

The easiest way around Fair Play (which hasn't been cracked) is to burn a CD and then rip it back into iTunes.

And DVD Jon - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6083110.stm

AFAIK, the cracks were broken by one of the iTunes 6 releases, and the stuff from DVD Jon was not released. He was trying to sell rights for a commercial program. I'm not sure that it ever got made.
Anybody able to confirm that the cracks work on iTunes 7.0.2?

Looks like a real hassle to use it though, with other 3rd party components needed etc. I'll stick to burning the CD's thanks.

None of this addresses the major flaw - Apple doesnt support (or condone) downloading from iTS from outside of the country of origin - in fact you're violating the TOS by doing so.

It may be in there TOS but as far as I know they don't go to any great lengths to prevent it. I guess its a condition imposed on them by the record companies.
