HI
I am about to get a isdn line for home use. And ISDN internet.
1. What modem should I buy to maximise throughput?
2. I heard that the USB modems cause latency and limit the download speeds. Is this true
3. I would like to share the internet access between three to 4 computers (2 people on the 4 computers)
4. I have a wireless network already setup (54mbs W-PSK)
5. where can i buy the modem
6. who is a cheap isdn internet provider.
7. does infinty call also work for the internet access?
Thanks

I used a Billion pci card when I had ISDN. Since moved to ADSL.
Curious - why ISDN?

ISDN isn't worth it, Infinity call is about R70, Normal line rental is R100.
ISP is R110 from Telkom internet for 64K (i'm not 100% on the precise amounts) and around R189 for 128K. Then u still have to pay around R8.50 per dailup. and remember u need to do 2 dailins for 128K ISDN so thats R17 per 128K dailin .
So R70+R100+R110+R150(for dailin's) = R430 (for non-24/7 internet)
True ISDN doesn't have a cap, but u can only surf during callmore (after 7pm in the evenings), but ISDN is also slow.
ADSL 384K costs R100 for normal line rental, R245 for 384K ADSL line rental, 2gig / 30gig local Openweb account costs around R159 (30gigs of local is alot , specially to send all the emails and local gaming, or local downloads) *also note with ADSL your phone line is open for faxes or normal calls*
ADSL 384 costs R100+245+R159 = R504 (then its 24/7 internet access)

I use almost all international sites. So wont isdn be cheaper on a month to month basis?
Why would you need 30gigs local bandwidth?

ISDN isn't worth it,
Depends entirely on your needs/usage... check this thread, ISDN Questions (http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=55632). In particular, see what BTech says in post #7.
If in doubt, I say go ADSL. ISDN can be a pain in its own right!
Infinity call is about R70, Normal line rental is R100.

There are ISPs that charge less than Telskum, starting at R79 for 64k I think. Check out Hellkom.co.za for a list of ISPs. Infinit-call caps landline calls at R9.85 or more. I think it's just under R10. So u're looking at more like R20 per 128k dial-in.
So R70+R100+R110+R150(for dailin's) = R430 (for non-24/7 internet)
True ISDN doesn't have a cap, but u can only surf during callmore (after 7pm in the evenings), but ISDN is also slow.
If you do opt for ISDN, another option is one of the ISDN Closer Plans (http://www.telkom.co.za/common/pricelist/prices/local/telkomcloser_calling_plans21b.html)...
ACTUALLY, don't opt for ISDN unless you know it's going to serve your needs better than ADSL! U have to pay them to install the ISDN NTU and later when u eventually remove it u pay again... (probably)
Love 'em or hate 'em, Cybersmart are the cheapest 3gb ADSL384k account (R125), AFAIK. So u're actually looking at R100+245+125 = R470 (all inclusive total cost)

Assuming your exchange is 'ADSL enabled' and u are close enough to it: Here's my 2 cents even though disabled already PM'ed u.
1. If it's throughput u want why opt for ISDN at a max of 128k?
2. Again if it's speed u want then go for DSL
3. Good luck to u if they intend surfing at the same time!!
5. There should be tonnes of 2nd hand ISDN 'modems' that ex-ISDNers want to get rid of!
6. I think ZaZU, but I speak under correction...
7. Inifinitcall works for all landline calls (such as 0860 numbers) but barring the special rate numbers such as 087x or 0865 etc...
EDIT: It sounds like ADSL would serve your needs better since u have a need for 3 or 4 PCs to be sharing the connection... That said, if you don't need speed and want to download stuff, you can potentially transfer 7.5gb (uploads and downloads combined) within the limits of the 150 internet hours that adds on to the Closer plans. Again, this all depends on what you plan to do with your connection in terms of what data will u be downloading/uploading.
