Hi
im currently going to be relocating to South Africa in Durban (pinetown) from Dubai, i was wondering if anyone could help me in finding out what i need in terms of connection, ISP, equipment and ect. for connecting to the Lightbringer realm in WOW europe, without latency and other issues.
Currently at my home in south africa i have a telkom line 384kbps should i upgrade this and to what ? should i install an antenna or use a different IS im totally lost when it comes to telkom and Internet within SA as i have been in Dubai for about 4-5 years there is only 1 ISP called Etisalat and basically i have a 2mbps line which is totally uncapped and unshapped and costs me about R480.00 a month.
Any idea on what i should use and the approx cost?
thnx

I've been getting better latency on my iBurst than my mates using 384kbs ADSL. Although iBurst is alot slower for most other FPS games so if your only playing WoW its fine, otherwise I'd suggest ADSL.

Thanks for the reply Fudzy,
and ubberfunk why reply if you do not have valueable input as far as i know there is no T1 line in SA dont you have other poeple you can bore.
so who is using a 384kbps dsl line in SA and is it enough to play wow and still get a low latency (100ms-200ms) or do i need to upgrade to 1024kbps line or is there another option that i should do ?
i apprectiate any helpfull feedback thank you

I don't play WOW so have your pinch of salt ready :)
The best we can get in SA currently is up to 4Mbs... Depending on your distance to the exchange and anything else Telkom feel like using. However if you take a look at the Telkom website you can get a Telkom Closer 5 package for R699 which gives you the upto4mbs connection and a bunch of other stuff for a good price.
If you have ADSL you have no need for anything other than a ISP account which you can get from a million different people. Unshaped is better but cost more.

I've got a friend going out on an uncapped, shaped 4mbs connection and he averages like 800ms. Its all about the shaping.

Hi Tourian
Unfortunately you will never get n latency of 100 – 200 not even with a 1024 unshaped account, the best you will get is around 400 – 500 with a unshaped account or around 600 – 800 with a shaped account.

There is a thread in this forum where people have been posting their latencies and their respective connection info.
From what I have gathered, and this is from personal experience as well, is that rizla is spot on. You're never going to get 100-200ms unfortunately.
My traffic goes through a Datapro Diginet line and depending on the area and number of players in that area, I'm seeing anywhere between 280ms and 450ms on Alonsus. I think you'd be hard-pressed to find an affordable home-solution that can give you < 500ms constantly. As Fudzy has said, iBurst (presumably with good signal) appears to be better than shaped ADSL "on the whole" for WoW, and I'd have to attribute that to iBurst's shaping, not the throughput.

Hi Rizla
thanks for the info a question though will i get between 400 - 600ms with an usnshaped 384kbps line? or will i need to upgrade to a 512kbps unshaped or even 1024kbps unshaped?
StNick do you connect to the europe Alonsus realm or is it in the states, could you give me a bit more info on your current setup what speed, router, and is it unshaped or shaped ? are you using a second party service providers. thnx sorry about all the questions.
does anyone currently connect to europe realms here and what latency and setups do you have and what would you recomend?

Tourian,
I am on the European Alonsus realm, yes. The latencies that I have mentioned and which have been gleaned from personal experience have also all been based on connections to Alonsus.
I have a Wi-fi connection to my service provider who has been kind enough to help me with routing my WoW traffic. To that end, we've found that I get the best latency when routed via Diginet. When routed via both Telkom and IS ADSL, I was getting in the region of 700-900ms. These are shaped solutions though, so I cannot speak for unshaped ADSL.

Tourian i had a 384 ADSL line with an unshaped account and some days my latency was between 300 - 500, which is not that bad, but when the servers are full and problems occur on blizzards side i got between 700 - 1500.
I got tired of this and got a 1024/4mb telkom line and now my connection is always between 200 and at most 350.

Hi,
I run 2 WoW accounts on Iburst and while they are pretty good I have noticed an increase in latency of late (1k or more).
On average though, I get around 600 - 800ms and Sub 600's on Sat and Sun mornings.
